Here's something to know:. When ASCAP distributes royalties for a performance of your music, 50% goes to the writer(s), and 50% to the publisher(s). If you want to access your publisher’s share, you will need to set up a publishing company with ASCAP. ASCAP cost to set up a Publisher entity is a one time fee of $50. Not so with BMI, It pays it's writer members both the writer and publishing shares, so no need to have a publishing company first before BMI pays you the publisher royalty share. You can always verify this with both BMI and ASCAP.

EXCELLENT overview! I'm with BMI but really didn't understand if there was a real difference! Thanks!

    Thx.
I've listened to several of these, and the consensus seems to be that BMI is slightly better in general.

It's still a hard decision to join either, especially with our favorite/influence music artists/bands joined one or the other, but very helpful video still!

I am BMI member too. And i have also Tunecore publishing administration and i registering only own composition. I don't get it. So how can i collect publishing royalties without publishing administration?

I'm only signed up with a distributor (and copyright) which is Distrokid. I want to make an account with BMI for royalties (song played on the radio (91.1) last Sunday, probably missed out on some money right?) BUT, what would happen if, for example, I made a BMI account tonight/today and signed to an independent label next week?
Are labels signed up with these royalty collection groups? Or does that depend on the label? Would me signing up cause legal issues or any issues at all between me and the label if this were the case? Thanks and great video!

Your songwriting and publishing monies are separate from label generated monies you could earn or be advanced as a recording artist. There should be no conflict. In fact, it's better if you have your PRO accounts ready to go. If you have a song that's getting a lot of plays, the PRO you choose may be able to claim the money retroactively. Ask!
By the way, even if you sign a publishing deal (separate from your label deal), your writer money should always come to you directly.
Double by the way, if you are signing a record deal, hire an entertainment lawyer to explain. : )

Many artists get stiffed from radio plays due to a royalty loophole -- more information here - www.soundexchange.com/advocacy/closing-the-amfm-radio-royalty-loophole/#:~:text=SoundExchange%20supports%20legislation%20to%20close,are%20played%20on%20the%20air.&text=AM%2FFM%20broadcasters%20are%20the,pay%20performers%20for%20their%20work.

It sucks, according to my ASCAP's contract I can't cancel until 1/2021. I gotta read through the Writer/Publisher Contract. Smh

Bro, I saw that chick Tia's video a few months ago. One, she used to work for BMI and that's fishy right there. There are a lot of folks being sponsored these days to say certain things about a company's competition. I was trying to get a balance review of both PROs but she was like throwing dirt on ASCAP and chanting some type of racist like fear baiting. I don't trust that type of person or content. My music is too sacred.

    • @TheWinterShadow

@@wordplaytjay Maybe your reasoning skills are not all there, read it again.....not once in my statement anyone was called racist. The statement was about someone 'using' racism to promote their own agenda for a 'sell up'. The truth is that EVERY company has a questionable past even the one hosting this video and just because you are being sponsored or work for one doesn't make them exempted while pointing the finger at the others. As a student of history pushing forward in the field, I am fully aware that some people have watered-down the word racism to their advantage to get a thumbs up these days. Knowing when THAT happens IS the reality....and that's far more important then ASCAP, BMI or your video. And, that comes from someone who is not being sponsored by anyone.
