    To this day, Eva Cassidy is my favorite female vocalist. She had mad acoustic guitar skills and she made every song her own. Such a loss. You should listen to her version of songbird. It’s stunning.

    Eva took songs you thought you knew, and made them brand new hers. If she didn't feel it, she didn't do it. I discovered Eva when this was released 10 years after her death. Hard to imagine she was singing with a cold that night. I have every recording she ever did now, and listen to her often. I miss her, and never met her.

Nobody sings it like Judy Garland did, but this rendition reaches me deep inside and grabs hold of part of me that's hard to get to. The sublime guitar and her beautiful voice transport me to a simpler time. I love it. Thanks.

    Eva Cassidy is a gem. There was only one, never to be repeated. Here voice is ethereal and grabs you and takes you right in the music. I had the privileged of seeing her live twice. Her performance was above outstanding. When she sang, there was total silence, it was if everyone knew we were seeing greatness and didn't want to miss a thing. If you aren't aware of her, there are any number of her videos here on CZcams.

    No one could ever perform this song like this witouut a true love and dedication to her first love, music. Her Dad, Hugh, said she made the guitar work too complicated. Eva proved him wrong. If this doesn't move you, you have to see if like the Tin Man you have a heart.

    Thank you so much for reacting to Eva Cassidy in this beautiful and now iconic performance. It was one of those unique and one-off performances that can never be repeated. You may or may not know that less than a year after, in November 1996, Eva sadly passed away from melanoma at only 33 years of age. If you haven't heard her other music, it is well worth listening to.

  • @wilburfinnigan2142
    @wilburfinnigan2142 Před rokem +2

    The back story to this song is that this is a SAD song because when sung and recorded in a club Eva was dying of cancer, just a couple of months later, why she was sitting down when she sang and why the song is so sad. NOW for your information Young Lucy Thomas of the UK sang a cover TRIBUTE to Eva who she liked...... Lucy also sang sitting down and accompanyed by James Franklin on the Guitar and quite frankly there could NOT have been a better tribute to Eva than what Lucy sang !!! She was spectacular as was James on the guitar, I thought on Eva's version the guitar over powered Eva. I would strongly suggest you listen to Lucy's version either for your own satisfaction or as a reaction, you owe it to yourself at least because Lucy out sings Eva and has a better presentation. I found Eva's version because I listened to Lucy's version and never heard of Eva, so went and searched her out, easy as it is easy to find Lucy's on You tube. Check out Lucy and be amazed !!!! Lucy also has about 60 other songs recorded and also sings with her 5 year younger sister.

    For many of us, this song was our introduction to the wondrous voice that was Eva Cassidy. It was first introduced on the UK’ BBC Radio 2 in the summer of 2000, two years after she passed from breast cancer and 4 years after this had been recorded at the Blues Alley, in Washington, DC. A special about Eva and the song by the BBC was also aired in later 2000. Then one of their correspondents brought the broadcast to the ABCNews Nightline broadcast which aired on New Years Eve 2000, only to become the most requested rebroadcast in the history of Nightline, and started Eve’s posthumous career. But it did change the fact that Eve easily became considered one of the great female voices of the 20th century. Her family has worked hard for the past 20 years to bring to life all of Eva’s performances clan the recordings up as much as technically possible. Her body of work is just phenomenal.

    To me, this is the most exquisite thing that has ever been recorded. I have always believed this song was about heaven, and I believe that is what she was thinking when she performed it. Sadly, she would actually be in heaven just a short while later. To me, this is what I will hear when I enter the gates of Heaven. Eva’s voice

  • @MrArdytube
    @MrArdytube Před 3 lety +6

    I love this performance. Her voice has a special purity. But I also live the guitar… and the fact that she finds lovely interesting new harmonies. Then finally, I think the “standard version” of this song is so well known that it is impossible to hear any rendition without simultaneous awareness of the standard version. In this case, I think the classic version acts as a subtext… an implied melodic counterpoint that floats in the background like a duet …even without needing to be played

    • @miketackabery7521
      @miketackabery7521 Před 2 lety +4

      What a terrific comment! Yes. The original floats in the background, and it is a kind of duet... in some otherworldly way beyond my understanding.
      Myself, I can hardly hear Eva without weeping... both for the beauty of her performances and the little, too little time we had her for.

      @@wilburfinnigan2142 this performance was recorded in January of 1996. Eva was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma in June or July of that year. She had had a malignant mole removed years earlier but it was discovered that the cancer had returned when she had a fall and landed on her hip. She thought the pain was from the fall but a scan showed the cancer in her bones and in her lungs. She passed away in November of 1996 at the age of 33. She sang 31 songs that night and she worked during the day so she probably needed the stool to sit on after working all day, suffering from a cold and singing those 31 songs.

    Very, very good reaction to a great rendition of a classic. However, the audio for your video has issues. In the analog audio of my youth, I would say that the signal was degraded by over-amplification. I don't know what the digital equivalent is, but the degraded signal was not helped by reducing any of the volume controls available to me. And the degraded signal in your audio is not evident on the other videos / reactions of this cover. Thanks in advance for fixing this, as I believe that I would otherwise enjoy your reactions very much. Oh, and one more clue, your analysis after the song didn't seem to have the distorted audio problem.
