  • We have looked at all the "T" power armor, and all the Enclave power armor, but there is yet more to cover. Some power armor doesn't neatly fall into any category, so we are going over the rest of the power armor to round out this series.

I think it would honestly be really cool if every names raider boss had a unique armor piece. 1) It could potentially actually give you legendary power armor if they went that route. 2) Even if it was only a named head piece, you could end up with a console achievement by collecting them; something like "Raider Reaper" or "Commonwealth's Most Wanted". 3) If all the bits were different, you could Voltron them together into a walking trophy case.

The rebar is for explosive protection. I think the logic for ghouls not being able to wear regular armor is a combination of too heavy and sticking to the ghoul. Imagine taking off some tight leather pants when your skin has the consistency of a rotten peach and the logic of them being able to wear power armor is that it's self supporting and air conditioned.

I also like the idea that it prevents people from getting too close. Theres far more exposed areas on raider armor, likely because they found empty frames and welded their own gear to it without much or any measuring. the exposed areas could be exploited in melee, or by a sneaking enemy, or some psycho-bent waster. If you put some rebar around your vital bits: head and neck, it makes it hard to attack you.

I think a possible reason why the Union PA has more damage resistance than most other PA is because it's not made to be mass produced, allowing to be more heavily armored.
Anything that's Mass Produced in the military has to have a balance of affordability and usability. Meaning that you aren't getting the best it could possibly be.
With PA this would mean lower protection.
This even explains T-65 being as superior as it is because it was only ever meant to be used by Secret Service agents, meaning it wasn't meant to be Mass produced and so they could put the very best tech and materials in it.

Another thing that isn't implemented despite the canonicity is movement. T-51 and X-02+ power armors are supposed to be extremely mobile in tandem with having power armor defenses, making them the best of both worlds. More heavily plated power armors that are more defensive in nature are supposed to also be clunkier and slower, and some power armors like the Union and Excavator models weren't made for combat so they pile on other features more suited for the intended work roles (Union is sturdy asf because it's supposed to be taking the brunt of steel foundry heat and heavy cargo 24/7, but it's way too slow for proper military use). The result is that there are military PAs which value a good balance of defense and mobility, and civilian PAs which are just big, slow, clunky work suits that normally never run or sprint in their lines of work.

Yeah, but when you look at the Hellcat suit, it seems to have a full respirator and scuba stuff built in. And we've seen boats that function post-war, like in Far Harbor and Point Lookout, so its totally possible that they took a boat back stateside, and then got setup. But even if they didn't, since Power Armor is built to be airtight and capable of recycling an air supply, they could've taken the time and literally WALKED along the bottom of the ocean to get back. (Granted, this is the least likely of any options)
Also, there actually was a unit named similar to that, the Harlem Hellfighters (aka. The 369th Infantry Regiment of the US army) were/are a unit in WWI and WWII that still exists today.
Its totally possible that the Hellcat Company may have had a similar name, but over time their name evolved by people saying it differently or something and the new name stuck.

Think about it. German stormtroopers were a specialized group of elite soldiers that utilized submachine guns, shortened rifles, and Modern-at-the-time Body Armor to storm trenches and assault positions. So America having a unit that's specialized for that same reason, with power armor that's designed specifically to resist ballistic weaponry, makes a lot of sense. Add to the fact that they survived the end of the world and even thrived is a testament to how trained they were. Just like the stormtroopers of old.

One potential reason for ghouls not being able to wear leather or metal armor might be the deterioration of their skins. Those armors might come in contact with their mussel or tissues directly, causing extreme pain (because of coarseness of the leather) and/or even lethal infection (rusty metal, you don't want that in direct contact to an open wound IRL). You can even see ghoul armors have cloth lining in Tactics.
However, in lore (though not in game prior to FO4) power armor seems to be closer to the exoskeleton, which supports itself and can get away with no skin contact at all, and would therefore be safe for ghouls. Environmental Suit would have polymer lining as the inner most layer, if FO has similar hazard suit technology similar to real life, and it would also be safe for ghouls.

my theory as to why ghouls cant wear leather or metal but can wear power armor comes down to temperature. If its hot enough and you sit on say a leather car seat without a shirt on, you may stick to it a bit, metal is a conductor which carries heat really well. And given that a ghouls skin is already necrotic and falling apart, having either of those two materials heat up and burn , or stick to them and may subsequently injure them if they try to take it off. Power armor on the other hand may be temperature controlled on the inside.

Excavator Power armor is probably my Favorite PA in Fallout 76, the carry bonus and it's unique look makes it amazing for me and it looks really good with most cosmetic skins.
I just wanted to add that all power armors in Fallout 76 have a hidden stat of 42% damage reduction for a full set, regardless of which one you are using.
Fallout 76 also has a legendary effect called overeaters which increases overall DR to 6% per piece the higher your hunger meter is , giving you +30% DR for a full set of Overeaters, which stacks with the DR already given by PA so a full set of Overeaters Power armor will give you 72% overall Damage resistence and that is not counting the resistances you get from the visible stats.
In conclusion the extra carry weight, mining bonuses and the legendary effects make Overeater Excavator Power armor one of the best PA's in 76 and most sought after.

Looking at a different franchise (starcraft 2) we see that the hands in Marine Power armor there are handles similarly to the PA frame. The hand at full extension stops before the mechanised digits begin, however the opening cinematic shows a control device that the user's hand is gripping onto that would ostensibly translate input from flesh digit to mechanical ones.
It's possible that the PA frame is using a similar type of device in theory but is not rendered in engine because Bethesda considered it to be too much work for such a minor detail. It would however track with what appears to be a pressure mat that the users feet rest on to move the legs, that or the whole thing works on nuclear magic/the DRIFT system

Honestly Raider Power Armor shows just how ingenious some of them can be, even among lowly cutthroats
Rigging a processing unit to read information like target data and munition displays is a difficult task. The fact these guys can do it without any formal training speaks to how dedicated they are to being professional bandits

The rebar cage, reminds me alot of the early detonation cages that are placed on tanks and other vehicles, designed to trigger a rocket or impact detonating explosive prematurely, and it would make sense as a defence against blunt force dispursing the force over the cage instead of on the actual armour, meaning you can replace just the rebar when damaged and leave the underlying armour intact

On the hellcat armor, the "little mask" on the chest area reminds me of an SCBA "self-contained breathing apparatus" but made far more compact than the navys version for divers.
I used to use its precursor the OBA "oxygen breathing apparatus" for firefighting in the navy.
Both would be pretty handy at keeping radiation dust from getting into your lungs and eyes. The draw back would be were to find replacement tanks and canisters for them. But if you did find a supply it would help you out and reduce your exposure.

Maybe the reason post-war power armor is so good is because pre-war, they were focusing on not only resistances but also comfort. While post war, resistances are all that matter

the midwestern poweramor variant seems like they found an X0-1 set and applied some of the innovations to old T51 sets and wanted something that would instill fear in those that came across armored Paladins making them easier to pacify

  • @SpartanSpear1671

I've always thought of the midwest power armor being a light weight, more agile variety of power armor due to it's sleek and more fitted appearance. I think it would potentially be used in a rescue/ scouting operation.

I'm thinking an in-house rebuild of existing T-51b suits to make the users able to crouch, crawl and climb in a way that the original suits just can't.
And while thwy were at it, they redesigned the helmet to look like a stylised metal deathclaw face and added more tactical command and communications functions to it, with antennas protected in the "horns".

the rebar being a countermeasure to Melee makes some sense, as the most common enemies a Raider might come across would be wild creatures or Feral Ghouls, nothing hurts more than trying to punch a piece of metal that stabs back at you... Sadly this is not a functional feature of the vanilla game.

One thing I love about the hellcat PA is the red visor, get yourself a Gat laser or any big gun and shine the visor in a dark room, looks awesome and always end up going back to it. With modded armor pieces and legendary it's actually one of my best pa models I have and buffs my special stats beyond any other I have available. The legendary and modded parts make up for low DR and most enemies I encountered in 75 use ballistic damage weapons so it works out great mostly.
I usually only switch if I'm going against robots ect.

My theory of ghouls not being able to use leather armor in tactics but they can use power armor is that their skin (if you forget fallout 4) is damn near peeling off, so if they wear metal or leather armor, it could stick/mold onto the armor ripping their skin off, but the power armor may not be touching their skin directly so there's no fear of it ripping off

I always loved the Midwestern BoS Armor. I too feel that the Black Devil Armor is a nod to it given the Enclave at Raven Rock also stopped at Chicago for a time. Given the early photo shows the BoS Paladins in T51b but the Chicago Paladins in the Midwestern Armor it stands to reason that they found suits in Chicago and combined them with their own existing armor to create a unique armor for their area. The Enclave in FO3 opting for Black Devil over traditional Mk II is maybe MK II is too Maintenence and resource heavy for a reeling Enclaves industrial base to keep up with. The idea the Enclave and Midwest BoS had a dust up also explains how the BoS lost Denver to Caesar and his Legion.
