  • In today’s episode we talk about a player who I started collecting the past few months. He is not discussed often and is not well known in the hobby, though he holds a significant baseball record.
    Thanks a lot for tuning in!

    The depth and breadth and scope and scale of what and how and why you collect is absolutely legendary. A Russian nesting doll of awesomeness and care. Shane, I’m floored by this new section of the shoebox.

    Great to finally see this showcase! Love the project 💯 and you landed the best of the best in terms of cardboard. Just awesome.

    Great Wladimir Balentien cards, Shane! Like many of the comments below, I never heard of that guy! I heard about Tuffy Rhodes since he was on the Cubs! I heard about him tying the record of Sadaharu Oh! I didn't hear about Alex Cabrera 55 the next season! Then Balentien 60 eleven years later! And Munetaka Murakami 56 in 2022! Lot of cool stuff!⚾

    I love that there are so many ways to collect in the hobby! You have found a new corner and a little outside the shoebox over in Japan. I remember him back a while ago, but did not know he held the single season NPB HR record.

      Thanks, Rob! Yeah Finest is just incredible, especially the '90s sets like that Tuffy Rhodes. Really glad you enjoyed this one and definitely appreciate you investing the time to check it out, pal!

    I love that you’re collecting Balentien, Shane! I couldn’t believe how affordable his cards were and still are. I have that 2008 Sweet Beginning auto too! Pretty cool to have something you’ve shown in a video 😄 Great cards and a cool way to collect!

    It always amazes me how you connect so many things and now you have a great little collection of a significant player that I would of never known about. Enjoyed learning about Vladimir and seeing some of cool cards you got to go along.

      Thanks a lot Mike! I had so much fun learning about this HR race and collecting some of his cards, wanted to try to maybe spread the word a bit since you don’t ever hear much about him. Really glad you enjoyed it, buddy! 👊

      Thank you, RJ! It's been a blast learning more about the lesser known single season HR record and scooping up these cards on the cheap. I'd like to expand my collection of NPB teams and players in the future, but we'll see. Hope you're having a good week!

      Thanks, Joe! I know you can 100% relate, this is like my version of the Billy Butler PC you have going like we've talked about. So much fun to have an affordable player to chase in order to be able to easily pick up all the cards that are tough if not impossible for the biggest stars. Thanks so much buddy!

      Thanks very much! Been having so much fun scooping his cards on the cheap after learning that he had the record. It's refreshing to have a player PC of someone that is not desirable in the hobby. Really appreciate you taking the time to check this one out!

    Shane, I can totally see the appeal of collecting a player who did something truly significant, whose key cards are priced at a few bucks apiece! 🤯🤯🤯At the risk of bordering on vulgarity, some might argue that Bonds' balls were juiced as well! 😆 Your red /5 auto card Balentien is super sweet and rare! 🤯🤯🤯 As an added bonus, sounds like you have inspired Dylan to start another collecting focus! 😆👍 I love your creative approach to meaningful collecting!

    Nice collection. He had a good career in Japan. A little more on the pricier end since he's popular but I'd check out Victor Starffin. Arguably the greatest pitcher to play in the Japan League. If you're looking more on the smaller budget you have Yutaka Fukumoto. First guy to reach 1,000 SBs in the world or Sachio Kinugasa. Broke Gehrigs record before Ripken. Some fun players to add to a Japanese PC.

  • @mookiechillson
    @mookiechillson Před 24 dny

    “Tuffy” had an opening day for the ages in 1994. He hit 3 HR off Doc Gooden at Wrigley, spoiling Doc’s last opener as a Met. I didn’t realize he was so prolific in Japan!

      Thank you, Brandon! Yeah Topps Finest is such a great brand, their '90s refractors in particular are insanely nice. I actually have quite a few Finest hockey refractors from the '90s, will try to queue those up for an upcoming video. Really appreciate you taking the time to check this one out, cheers!

    Fantastic showcase of Wladimir Valentien! Why didn't the opposing pitchers collude together to prevent him from breaking Sadaharu Oh's homerun record like they did to Tuffy Rhodes? I guess in the ten years between Rhodes and Balentien the Japanese have softened their hostility and objection over foreigners achieving or breaking sports records of their fellow countrymen.

  • @AutomaticForTheCollector

    Great as usual, Shane! Neat idea, and like all the others who have commented, I did not know anything about this player either. I really liked the Allen & Ginter card and the Draft Pick "black" card of Vlady. The S. Oh card you showed in this was so cool also. I don't have any of his cards, but hope to add one to the collection eventually. - Take care!

      Eric! So glad you caught this one, pal. Once I started learning about the record and discovered all of this I couldn't wait to get a video together to share here on CZcams, just took me a while to get all the cards I wanted in hand. Really appreciate you taking the time to watch this and comment, buddy!

      Thanks, Peter! Yeah it's pretty cool that even though there's an asterisk next to it someone who holds such an important record could be largely unknown in the hobby. Really appreciate you taking the time to check this one out!

    That is sad what they did to Tuffy. There is a video of Miggy at bat, they were intentionally walking him. He still swung at the ball and got a hit !! Not sure if it was a homer or not though. But he still swung lol It was a freaking epic video. Nice Vlady Draft Pick card. Its always fun to find gem players that most of us have never heard of. Now, we will all know of him because of this video. Very nice auto !! Awesome that it was so cheap. I think its fun to collect the unknown players of baseball. Its a great idea and you can get a lot of cards for cheap. Ohhhh wow, that Ticket Stub card is freaking sweet !! Fantastic video, thanks for teaching me all about Vlady, Now I can say that I know who he is. Thanks for sharing !!

      Thanks a lot for checking out the episode, Lisa! It has been so much fun learning about the home run record over in Japan just because it was so foreign to me (hah!) compared to the MLB record that I’m so familiar with. Really appreciate the awesome comment, glad you enjoyed it! 😃

    Shane, this was really cool! I feel like I remember seeing that mariner draft pick card and not knowing how to pronounce his name?!?! I do remember Tuffy Rhodes! In his first opening day game for the Cubs he hit three home runs in the opener! I actually have a TTM sent out to him and I’m waiting for a response. 🤞 great info on this player and on this league. I think his cards go well with your judge and bonds and Mary cards. Do you have a McGuire and Sosa rookie cards to go along with them as well?thanks for sharing Shane

    Karl Tuffy Rhodes, ever so briefly on the Red Sox. He hit 3 home runs on opening day for the Cubs around 1994. Does that 2021 Topps card have his record home run total listed in the stats on the back? I also want to add that if you total up all of his professional home runs, he hit 507.

    • @shoeboxlegends
      @shoeboxlegends  Před 24 dny

      Yep very briefly! I just learned about his opening day home runs, against Doc Gooden and the Mets no less! Thanks a lot for checking this one out!
