    Well done, Shane. You opened a discussion on a very important topic. Still learning and assessing more about the real and potential impact of this decision, both the positives and the negatives. No doubt there will be a significant change in the collecting goals of many hobbyists.

    Great Josh Gibson cards, Shane! I don't know what is happening with card prices these days, but I do enjoy the discussion!⚾

      It really is crazy, James! I try to avoid thinking about it as much as possible but sometimes it just creeps into the hobby regardless since I'm obviously trying to get the best prices I can on these cards. It's a crazy, but also fun, time in the hobby for sure!

    Gave a video like. I've heard a lot of people talk about this. Really fun to see those Josh Gibson cards. A legend who is finally getting some more attention is great to see.

      Thanks, Brian! I don't think he's too expensive now, I think for a long time he just didn't get the love that he deserved. Plus as I said in the video he's an interesting case given that he has legitimately zero playing-era cards. Really appreciate you checking this one out, my friend!

    Very interesting topic Shane. Crazy how his prices have sky rocketed. I think we will definitely see a spike but may come back to earth. I do think you will see more insert sets featuring these types of players from Topps flagship. They will jump on this bandwagon IMO.

    • @shoeboxlegends
      @shoeboxlegends  Před 15 dny

      Two great points Mike, and I agree with you on both. I think prices will regress, but not to where they were previously, somewhere in the middle most likely. I also think that Topps will start to give us more cards of former Negro Leagues players, I just hope they expand beyond the obvious Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige type guys…

  • @SportscardsSweden

    Really like the design of the Allen & Ginters cards.

    • @shoeboxlegends
      @shoeboxlegends  Před 24 dny +1

      Yeah they're really classy looking, aren't they? I like that the design is slightly altered year to year, yet is always instantly recognizable as A&G. One of Topps' most successful modern products, for sure. Thanks for checking this one out!

  • @OlSargeCollects
    @OlSargeCollects Před 24 dny

    Excellent question to ponder! I hope his cards gain more interest as well as the modern day cards of other negro league HOF players. It would be cool if Topps / Stadium Club came out with a tribute set.

    • @shoeboxlegends
      @shoeboxlegends  Před 3 hodinami +1

      100% agree with you there buddy, I hope it leads to more widespread interest in former Negro Leaguers beyond just Gibson, Paige and Robinson. We will see!

      Thanks, Jason! I just think he's an interesting name in the hobby, with his lack of a true "playing era" card forcing people to either think outside their conventional guidelines or else maybe miss having him in their collection at all. Cheers, pal!

    Great topic touched on Shane. A lot of vintage speculators and flippers are going hardcore into Josh Gibson. A lot of the prices are jarring. It's like they just discovered who this guy is a couple weeks ago.

    Shane, what a fantastic episode and what sweet cards! I'm so happy for you, that you were able to scoop up those epic Josh Gibson cards prior to the Gibson flip-nami of 2024! 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 Of course, a flip-nami is essentially a tsunami of flippers who come out of the woodwork when they sniff a flip-nami opportunity! 😆 I guess I shouldn't be so flip-pant with my comments! 😆 You pose some great questions! Are modern cards and vintage cards in collecting competition, or can they be in collecting cooperation? Well, you are the master of collecting cooperation, weaving meaningful collecting themes together with glorious cardboard, the sum of which is much greater than the parts! I loved this! Take care, my collecting brother! 😊👊

    • @shoeboxlegends
      @shoeboxlegends  Před 3 hodinami

      As usual my friend this comment is EPIC! You know me well, I don't see any need to decide on just one era or one player. But, that's the beauty of the hobby, we can all share the same hobby yet all approach it just a little bit differently. I for one am really glad to have Josh Gibson represented in my collection, even if the cards weren't printed up during his lifetime. Cheers Adam, hope you are enjoying the beach! :-)

  • @kenscardboard
    @kenscardboard Před 24 dny

    Great topic Shane. Love the A&G Gibson and kudos to finding the Bazooka back card.
    Personally I think that a new floor has been set for modern Negro League player cards. But, there is a hype right now with the news that will die down after the baseball season is over. Always those trying to take advantage of the recent attention. I know I did it when it was announced that Todd Helton was going into the HoF. I sold a bunch of duplicate cards that I had for a decent return.
    I think there will be a few vintage collectors that will jump into the modern cards, but the majority will stay with vintage playing day cards.
    Good stuff my friend.😊

    • @shoeboxlegends
      @shoeboxlegends  Před 2 hodinami

      Excellent thoughts, Ken, I actually agree with you 100%. While I don't think recent prices will sustain necessarily, I do think a new floor has been set higher than what it's been at traditionally in the past. Really appreciate you checking this one out, and weighing in with a great comment!

    Great video…love the ginter Josh Gibson cards. Like Gibson, I would love to see players like Buck Leonard, Leon Day, etc. get their due. I think the interest in these players will grow, as they get featured in video games (mlb the show has a phenomenal story line play mode for these players) and modern card sets. Topps recently came out with special Rickwood field cards of these players. My hope is we get some Topps Gilded cards of some of these stars. Again, great video.

    • @shoeboxlegends
      @shoeboxlegends  Před 2 hodinami

      So well said Shawn, and you touched on a few things that have been on my mind for sure. I do have a couple of REALLY nice Buck Leonard cards that I'll be featuring in an upcoming video or two, but I agree that I hope the inclusion of these stats gets folks to look a level deeper than just Gibson, Paige and Jackie, great as those guys were. I have my fingers crossed big time for an inclusion on the Gilded checklist, even though I'd probably be outbid by a country mile trying to actually win one! Cheers, buddy!

  • @mookiechillson
    @mookiechillson Před 24 dny

    Shane, great video and thesis! I definitely don’t consider myself primarily a modern collector, but I have definitely crossed over to get that 2022 Topps Living Josh. I love it for the same reason you like the A&G… it’s at least adjacent to what a Gibson card might have looked like if he had lived and played into his early 40’s. I definitely appreciate the modern period treatment of Gibson and others the best. I imagine we’re not alone!

    • @shoeboxlegends
      @shoeboxlegends  Před 3 hodinami

      Well said, Mookie (of course)! It certainly seems we have a lot more company on the Josh Gibson front than we did a couple of months back :-) My hope is that the attention leads to a lot of fans digging deeper into the history here and not just stopping at "Josh Gibson is the new career batting leader". We'll see!

      In the three weeks since this video I've seen prices recede a little bit as expected, but not as much as you might think. I doubt we'll see them return to pre-stats levels at least not for Gibson. Cheers and thanks for the watch and great comment!

    Great video Shane! I love that A&G image too - it also appears on the ‘06 Bowman Sterling Relic. I respect, but never really understood the ‘era collector.’ Regardless of era, it would drive me nuts to NOT have a Top 100 player represented in my collection 😂

    • @shoeboxlegends
      @shoeboxlegends  Před 3 hodinami +1

      Thank you, Al! Yeah, even though he lacks a proper vintage, playing-era card I don't think there's any way I could stand not having Josh represented in my collection. To each his own, though! By the way, really enjoyed your "short-winded" episode with Graig, that was super fun! Thank you for watching and for the comment!

    I think vintage only collectors will begin to appreciate the modern cards. Too many great images and beautiful cards out there that I don’t see how a true collector could pass them up..especially for someone like Josh Gibson who there aren’t really any options out there but modern. Great cards Shane! I was waiting to see a buyback 😁

    • @shoeboxlegends
      @shoeboxlegends  Před 3 hodinami

      Exactly, Hugo! I've actually started to see some of this in action even in my own small circle of vintage collecting friends over the past year, and I love it. As you said, Gibson poses an interesting challenge to "vintage only" collectors, unless they're just content not having him represented in their collection at all, which is fine too. Thanks for checking this one out and for the great comment, buddy!

    Its about damn time that those players get their dues !! I am not even mad about Gibson being better than Ty Cobb lol I like the shiny shiny Gibson the most. Its nice and colorful. I do like that Gibson mini a lot ! Wow, you got the market on Gibson's cards. That black border one is sweet looking. Sick hand numbered mini !! That is a good one for sure. I agree, you should get it graded !! I swear, I called that last card as a buy back !!! I totally knew you were going to have one lol I really enjoyed seeing your collection of Gibson. Thanks for sharing !!

    Gibson cards that people wouldn't spend $5 on in early May, people are spending $500 in late May. Fools Gold. Hobby FOMO is hilarious. Methink, if I was you, i'd sell the PSA 10 now and the black and buy them back again in a few years and reacquire them at $5-$50. With those profits now, you especially, could do something spectacular with.

    • @shoeboxlegends
      @shoeboxlegends  Před 24 dny

      It really is crazy, isn't it? I have considered selling the two PSA 10s, or at least listing them at insanely high BIN with offers available and see if anyone reaches out. Not like I need them graded just grabbed them as second copies because I like that particular card so much. Pricing craziness aside, I love to see Gibson getting so much deserved hobby buzz!
