    A legend in his own right and an aristocrat..!!. Ustad Rais Khan sahab has instilled in the minds of music lovers that music has no boundaries and is boundless. We had the great fortune to listen him in small pieces of sitar music with Madan Mohanji in film songs. The demonstration cum recital of Raag Charukeshi and Darbari Ang by the maestro will definitely give us an insight of his great depth into which he delves into the raag, deft hands with which he holds the instrument, nimble fingers with which he effortlessly brings alive the notes and a great sense of music and melody which he combines in his compositions..!!. (Please note how Khan sahab brings you to the "Som"- marvellous .!!!.)
    His two sons have lent a wonderful support and also the wonderful accompaniment on table by Ustaadji.
    A legend in the galaxy of legends...!!.
    Salute..!!
    Thanks for uploading this wonderful interview with Ustaadji..!

He actually was the name for Sitar. You will always be missed. A great name in the history of sitar non other then USTAD RAIS KHAN SAHAB !!!

    Not denying the fact that if these people are talking this way to each other means the issue was hurting to them selfs
    Both these masters are gone from this world and we all should just keep selfs to just there music

    Sour grapes...taking a dig into the great heritage of Ustad Vilayat Khan's gharana is futile, insane and nonsense. Why only Vilayat sahaab, there are so many other greats in that lineage: Ustad Imdad Khan, Inayat Khan, Wahid Khan, Muhammad Khan, Imrat Khan, Nishat and Irshad Khan. Can you deny the lineage of so many greats.

    • @r8rdarklord
      @r8rdarklord Před 6 lety +4

      They were greater players than him because of there sheer virtuosity & the ability to explore a raga to its completeness. Ustad Raees Khan could dazzle you with brilliance but you will be hard put to find out a performance where he plays a Raga & explores it to it's fullest extent.

    • @nagnath_artist_sitarist
      @nagnath_artist_sitarist Před 6 lety +6

      Almost all the videos of Ustad Rais Khan are a minimum of one hour length (any raag).. So just to begin with, what exactly do you think he's doing all the time if not exploring the raag. Is he tuning his Sitar half the time? His concerts start with vilambit / ati-vilambit compositions.. He has Merukhand / chhuut taans in madhyalay / drut taal which no one on this planet can play.. What other exploration is lacking?
      There is a video where the great Ustad Nazakat Ali Khansahab says he plays 101% gayaki (Raag Bageshri) and taans which very few would even dare attempt!
      And if you like Ravi Shankar's style of raga exploration, then there's nothing to say!

    • @r8rdarklord
      @r8rdarklord Před 6 lety

      Maybe he has not been recorded as extensively as Ustad Vilayat Khan, Pandit Budhadiya Mukherjee, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Pandit Ravi Shankar or Pandit Nikhil Banerjee. His concerts are mostly Yamani which he refers to as ek-prakar ka yaman, Nand Kalyan, Bageshwari, Charukeshi, followed by Afghani Dhun, Gazals. It certainly gives the impression that his body of work is not as vast as his compatriots. Also, it was Ustad Salamat Ali Khan who paid that complement, I have watched that video.
      BTW, do you consider the beenkar gharana sitar players as inferior? I think both Pandit Nikhil Banerjee or Pandit Ravi Shankar as every bit the equal of Ustad Vilayat Khan of Itawwa artists.

    • @nagnath_artist_sitarist
      @nagnath_artist_sitarist Před 6 lety +3

      Even if you simply type Ustad Rais Khan in utube you get his Todi, Abhogi, Darbari, Shankara Bihag, Jhinjhoti, Mia Malhar, Kalashree, Bhairavi with Zakir, Pilu Thumri (all unparalleled and one hr plus).. These are more than enough for a lifetime. Quality matters.. Others like SP I don't care to comment..
      And no, Maihar gharana had no beenkars.. Moreover Nikhil and Ravi Shankar styles are so diff. Nikhilda was more gayaki ang and RS was tantrakari.. And if you say Beenkars, Ustad Rais Khan's Mewati Gharana founders were vocalists Ustad Ghagge Nazir Khan and Beenkar Ustad Wahid Khan (direct disciple of supreme Beenkar Ustad Bande Ali Khan). The entire gharana forefathers were beenkars or surbahariyas and court musicians. Pl visit www.mewatigharana.com for complete details..

    He calls Itawa Gharana Itawa - Pitawa. He considered Ustad Vilayat Khan as his rival but before Vilayat Khan there was Ustad Inayat Khan, before him there was Ustad Imdad Khan etc. All of them were excellent Sitariya's. It doesn't behoove him to talk about Itawa in such a disparaging manner, specially when his mother came from that lineage.

      my dear brother ask your self one thing are you more close or family to vilayat khan aur is it rais khan??..oye yaar mere bhai (if you understand hindi) they are family ..infact there is a clip now where vilayat khansahab says not only he they all are 'Mewati...Originally' yes he uses this word ORIGINALLY..so my brother i know this bad blood is not good in public but who knows who's right..i since my love for sitar from late 70s was confused by & still and to say even more now about this so called sitar war between these ppl..VK said itawah which was obeyed by his students his sons also SP..now find out what imrat khan says he says Imdadkhani baaj..ask buddhaditya who's father bimlendu babu was enayt khan student always said and taught his son buddhaditya to say imdadkhani baaj or gharana..now in this clip UVK says he's Mewati not only that he also stamp it by saying he is mewati's from Madhya pradesh..(itawah is in UP..he is saying they are from MP) so mere bhai confusion unke ghar me hai so its obvious some sparks would come out when its asked to urk & his ways of talk were famous as we all know..czcams.com/video/XdJ1An5JkpQ/video.html.. carefully hear this from 3.15 to 3.25

      @@LRamkapur Do you have the clip where Ustad Vilayat Khan says that his Gharana is from mewat? BTW, even a blind person will be spot the difference between the playing of Ustad Inayat Khan & Ustad Mohammad Khan. There recordings are there for everybody to see. It is also true that Ustad Vilayat during his younger days trained under Ustad Mohamad Khan but his own sister (Ustad Rais Khan's mother) says that he didn't consider him as his teacher/Ustad. Finally, if Ustad Vilayat Khan was from mewati gharana why does his sister say "hamare gharane ka baaz gattode ka baaz hai. Hamare baap aur dada wohii bajate the". This implies that either there were two types of baaj that was being played in mewati gharana or these two gharanas were separate. Here is the clip in which her sister makes the statements that I have referred to: czcams.com/video/isUN5cX0Edg/video.html.

    Raees Khan sahib was a great Sitarist, and there cannot be two opinions about it. But he was not an easy person to interview. In this video, he launches into making controversial statements about others by innuendo which was absolutely not needed. He also became oblivious to the fact that there were 6 other people sitting on stage with him, including his two sons, and also eminent Tablist Hashmat Ali Khan sahib, along with his son Rahim Khan. These all became paralyzed non-participants due to the manner in which Raees Khan launched into his criticism of other artists and gharanas. The lady interviewing him had no idea how to stop him in order to shepherd him back on course. This interview became one of the most unpleasant interviews I have ever watched of him. Raees Khan did other such embarrassing interviews towards the end of his life which did not reflect well on him. It is best however for us to remember him for his great performances and recordings from the heyday of his career.

    I feel unfortunate not to have listened to Ustad Raees Khan Saheb in any live concert but having heard him on radio in the forties, he seemed to be a very "taiyar" sitari comparable with Pt. Ravi Shankar and Ustad Vilayat Khan Saheb who were the two brightest young rising sitar playing stars in Indian classical music horizon at that time.

      Dola Desai - Actually this war of words lead to the biggest disservice that could be done to the Sitar craft. He went to Pakistan, where he was literally begging for concerts & there were no takers. He had to resort to singing Gazals. Had he stayed in India, his name would be taken alongside with the giants of his craft and his body of work in both concerts & recorded music would be substantial.
