    My two cents on the speech by Khansaab.
    1. Khansaab's father Ustad Mohammadkhan sahab beenkar was a legend in his days. I can say this because my father was a disciple of Ustad Mohammad Khansaab. (Ust. Rais Khansaab's father).
    2. Ustad Mohammad Khansaab's heart was so delicate, pure and childlike, that even when a small child sang in the correct surs, he would cry like a child in sheer bliss! (My father bears witness to this...)
    3. Ustad Mohammad Khansaab's own baaz was par brilliant. In his later days, he was paralyzed. Yet, he was adamant to teach. Even in this condition, he kept teaching my dad.
    4. I feel that such a great artist's name should NEVER have been omitted by anyone. Be it Ustad Vilayat Khansaab, or Ustad Rais Khansaab himself. Its not a gharana war per se. Its about due respects going to the guru. If that is missed, we as Indian classical musicians believe, everything is missed.
    Again, Just my thoughts.
    I will not take names here, but when someone gives his / her entire life to music, to teaching and to the real "Guru Shishya Parampara", missing out on such names is not very colorful.
    Respects to all names taken here in this clip. :)

      axemanextremist At his home. I still have the 'Hiren Roy' sitar that my dad Bharat Munshi (who never went professionally into sitar). During Ustad Mohammad Khansaab's last breaths, it was my dad who was holding his hands. Whenever my dad recalls fondly of Ustad Mohammad Khansaab and his baaz, he always has tears in his eyes! Such was the great personality!

    Ustad Vilayat Khan saheb, aothough a great musicians but was also publicity-hungry. He would also play to the gallery most of the times. He knew the art of hogging the limelight. Ustad Rais khan saab on the other hand banked only on his talent which was more than sufficient for him to rule the hearts of music-lovers.

    As a music lover and passionate follower of that gharana, I am deeply offended by the tone of these comments. Ultimately the Artist will be liked and judged by what they present and that matters more! There was no need to say all this but he has repeatedly made offensive remarks about other Indian legends that I have heard of! So no surprises there! I have the highest respect and affinity for his playing and he is no doubt a genius, albeit a flawed one!

    All that Ustad Rais Khan Sahib said is true. It is rather unfortunate that Ustad Vilayat Khan does not mention his mentors and ustads. In his zest to prove that he did 'Riyaz' to achieve his position in this world is not true.
    Yes indeed Ustad Vilayat Khan is a great sitar player but he did learn from Ustad Mohammed Khan Sahib the father of Ustad Rais Khan. Yes it is also true that he plays the baaj of Ustad Mohammed Khan's gharana.
    All the recordings prove that Ustad Inayat Khan played very differently than Ustad Vilayat Khan. He passed away when Ustad Vilayat Khan was only 9 years old so he could not teach him for too long. The influence of Ustad Mohammed Khan is evident.

    • @r8rdarklord
      @r8rdarklord Před 7 lety +3

      It's very difficult to verify what Ustad Rais Khan says because Ustad Vilayat Khan trained under Ustad Wahid Khan, Ustad Bande Hussain Khan, maternal uncle Ustad Zinda Hussain Khan.. So, it's incorrect to say that he was self-taught. Regarding the baaz, he changed his baaz about three times across his life-span, so which baaz is the mewati Gharana baaz? It is also true that his right hand technique is representative of Ustad Inayat Khan (his father) as is obvious from the Imdadkhani gats that he played. Ustad Raees Khan is known to claim several things at several different times, hence difficult to say who is right.

    • @r8rdarklord
      @r8rdarklord Před 6 lety +4

      Let's assume what you are saying is true for a second. Are you claiming that Ustad Vilayat Khan was made by just studying sitar for four years with Ustad Mohammed Khan. What did he do for the rest of his life?

    No doubt Rais Khan Saheb has been a Star of Indian Music.
    Melody and craftsmanship of sita playing par excellence.
    He must have felt very hurt, thats why he chose to speak.
    He had lot of sitar still to play before Indian connoisseurs in India. He chose to leave India at his peak. We still miss his music.

      Why is he hurt? Ustad Vilayat Khan was not made in 4 years of Riyaz. He has given his life to this instrument. Also, he has changed his baaz 3 times, so who can claim whose baaz is he playing. Finally, Rais khan is wrong, just by playing the Gharana baaz doesn't mean that one becomes a guru. That is not the tradition, look at Ustad Sukhwinder Singh Pinky who plays the banaras baaz & was a student of Pandit Kishan Maharaj. Shubh Maharaj who is an up and coming tabla player doesn't go on saying that he is Ustad Sukhwinder's guru. The fact is Ustad Rais Khan was jealous of Ustad Vilayat Khan's prowess & fame, which is what is coming out in this monologue.

    Some strange confusion about Gharanas,Lineage & who learned from whom happened mostly in the 60s till early 90s and such gharana wars were common in many other vocal/tabla/instrumental gharanas
    but having close contacts with some faternity and linking to this Rarest Rare Audio I shared few year ago
    i wanted to put back light again on the words what Rais khan said in the above clip
    i amazingly found a clip were Vilayat himself confess his Lineage & Roots to MEWATI which for me was a truth i heard from many others but was surprising to hear him confess amazingly also he talks about his Madhya Pradesh(central India) Indore,Ratlam connection
    i am speechless confused of one thing forsure if Vilayat himself says he is Mewati roots who and why the Damn f... Etawah Gharana or controversy started??
    i strongly remembers Bimalendu Mukherjee (Buddhaditya Father) said to me Etawah seems to be an Egoist Decision from Vilayat himself & its stupid of such branching out only reason he wanted everyone under him,this seems to be also a strong reason imrat khan his brother bimalendu or many others didn't gave there nod to Etawah but said Imdadkhani Baj or gharana same reason i feel rais spoke widely about not accepting Etawah as gharana..
