  • Amazing historical recording by Sharon Lowen of 3 great gurus of Odissi classical dance. Gurus Gangadhar Pradhan and Ramani Ranjan Jena revising a classic pure dance composition Shankara Varanam Pallavi with Padmavibhushan Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra. All 3 are no longer alive. recorded in mid 1980's at the Odissi Research Centre, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Kum Kum Mohanty, director, also seen walking through. I recorded this on a video 8 cassette recorder, probably during one of the master training workshops Kelubabu taught at ORC. same recording session has me dancing Arabhi with Kum Kum Mohanty.

Thank you didi, for sharing this video. Can I request you to upload the video again, as the music is mismatched with the steps ?? It will be very helpful 🙏

true, but itwas a video 8 camera, transferred to VHS, then CD, then digitized. you have to sing the music in your head. it's of greatest value for those who know the pallavi!

Great to see Guruji's teaching style, may I know who are the two students dancing beside him.
The left one seems like my Guru, Late Guru Giridhari Nayak.

Pranam Sharon Ma'am! Have browsed through all documentaries you produced during your learning days. It really helps to get an insight of how and what must have gone into composing such masterpieces. Thank you so much. Just a humble request Ma'am, Can you publish rest of the recordings or are those available online on some other website. Dhanyawaad!!

Cool, Sharon. I was high and came across this. Loved the close up of the guru in the center....brought me back to all I could have been experiencing if my lifestyle had been different. Wish the sound had been on in the video..... Where are you teaching now? Would love to keep in touch. xo

Ma'am ! just see how is Guruji doing kridita puspita and how it became now! Am really upset with some original elements of traditional Odissi.

    • @SharonLowen1

things change for various reasons. I personally agree that original choreography should not be altered and one has full freedom to do as one wishes in one's own new choreography

Yes, rightly said. Odissi has its own identity for its grace and poetic movements which are highly appriciated. Of course Odissi style music.
