  • I do encourage gardeners around me to compost. It can be done even in fairly small gardens. I use black plastic bags to do my compost and it takes around a year for all the debris to turn into beautiful aromatic soil.

    Letting the leaves decompose out of the boundary of our yard has helped us so much. Our yard was quite small when we moved in 6 years ago, but after many falls where we blew our leaves to the boundary all those leaves have made our yard so much bigger! Every spring when I go to inspect, as I leaf blow I sing “lawn extension” to myself. Now I’ve got tons of space for my hostas!
    Composting is amazing!

      Totally agree, composting is amazing! And leaves are great free gifts!

    It’s the time of year!😅 I even gather the leaves from the neighborhood, process with leaf mulcher and admittedly I mixed it with blood meal and mulch it in my garden bed. I had a bumper crop of cucumber, loofah and Swiss chard in the bed that I applied my leaf-blood meal mulch without application of any fertilizer the whole season

      That blood meal can do wonders in the garden, right? I am planning to do one application next spring for all the garden.

      @@OlgaCarmody I bought a 50 lbs sack during the winter. I realized that buying organic fertilizers over the winter cost 30-50% less. Other bulk fertilizers I bought are Rose Tones and Plant Tones

    I amend in the fall with manure and in the spring with compost

    Does the construction bag need drainage holes poked in it?

    I have wanted to compost for a long time but would have to do a separate barrel for kitchen scraps like you do. What exactly do you compost in the black bags?

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  Před rokem

      No meat, no fish or oils go into that compost barrel. I put all the veg scraps into it. Really golden stuff which we so often throw away.

    Hi Mrs. Olga,
    Do you feed cow manure for your roses in October?

    • @OlgaCarmody
      @OlgaCarmody  Před rokem

      Sometimes I do, sometimes I use compost, whichever comes in plenty.
