Preparing Soil for Arrival of David Austin Roses Next Spring

- I strongly believe that the only way for a healthy rose is through a healthy soil. I persuaded my kids for another (or gosh) David Austin rose - Olivia Austin. It is coming next spring as bare root and I am preparing the soil for it now. Can't wait for future blooms already....

How many inches of soil you dug out there? Seems not too deep. We only need to treat the top 6" layer of the soil?🙏🙏❤
I know that my soil there is deep, because when I was putting previous bush there, I literally took buckets of rocks and heavy solid layers of sand. I should have mentioned it in my video, but being in front of the camera can sometimes put my head in a numb zone. Haha. So, yes, deep cultivation and adding of good stuff inside is good. I will pin this message to the front for folks to be able to read it.
I also forgot to mention, that those beneficial bacterias produce antibiotics for plants roots, create a “castle” around roots to fight bad guys from attacks.

Another great video! Thanks Olga. And I agree about having a living soil. I did a very similar treatment to my garden bed late Summer/early Fall and have my first DA roses coming this Spring. I also have planted peonies, allium and tulips. Spring is going to be wonderful…just gotta get through another winter first.

Your roses are going to be beautiful! I have lots of roses, and find that preparing the planting area beforehand with compost, and then using a good organic mulch that will break down into the soil over time, is the best way to feed them. Feed the soil, not the plants!

I agree 100% but I also add 2 cups of organic volcanic rock dust in every wheel barrel it helps with the minerals which improves the health, bigger blooms and strength of your plants

I went to a nursery last week and he uses synthetic fertilizers and he was talking about how he has a special mix and said that when organic gardeners show him their garden pictures that they don't look healthy. I only use organic for my fruit trees and they look great.
I only use organic fertilizer and will always do, and I don't really listen to nursery folks with their synthetic stuff. Everyone chooses their own road. Happy gardening!
The nurseries have staff dedicated to fertilize and watering the plants as needed by the synthetic fertilizers, which are like steroids. I would rather wait for my blooms and invest in the health of the plant by working on the soil with compost and leaf mulch etc.
Thank you for another informative video. I love the idea of a natural soil instead of chemical induced soil. My hope for the future is to build a food forest mixed with flowers/roses. Nature teaches us on gardening if we pay close attention.
I couldn’t agree more, natural soil is the way for the future. And it is so much easier to let plants decide for themselves what to do, as they did for many thousands of years!

Yes yes yes, soil eco life is coming to the attention of concerned people everywhere. I just received four DA roses. SHOOT! Wish I saw this last fall so I got ready for today like you did!! I researched roses that would be good in clay and humidity. I do have biochar, coco coir, mycorhhizae, worm castings, vermiculite, and other things like marine additives to go into the soil at planting. I will try to go forward more prepared, meanwhile using brains and intuition to give my rose a good life.
Your roses will be so happy in your healthy garden! And you won't need to sweat over every little problem with them! Healthy soils create gardens which take care after themselves!

Hello Olga, I am really enjoying your videos! It is exactly the information I was needing to know. I know you are preparing your soil for next spring, but can you prepare the soil days before putting roses in the ground if you don't have time before hand? I would think that it is better than not doing it at all. Thank you so much.
Of course, in my video I am doing the ideal way, which is the first time for me. I usually go ahead and dig all the good stuff into the soil same day of planting. And rose roots figure it out together with happy soil inhabitants. Glad you are enjoying my videos, I am fairly new to CZcams, and your encouraging words are great!

In my humble opinion if one uses leaf multch composte it should well decomposed,because leaf multch is notorious for funky mold and fungus. I never use new leaf multch as a top dressing. My d.a
Roses are in a brutal full sun garden,and the heat is intense from high masonry walls on all four sides. The olivia austin rose performs well in sutch a hot humid,sometimes stagnant of air flow enviornment. A strong companion planting is beneficial also,for aiding in color,fragrance and good pollinators.

Olga...once again thank you for this great video. Last night I spread out some steer manure on the flower bed where I'll be planting the roses, I don't have leaf compost ready yet and my bare root David Austin roses are arriving tomorrow, should I still mix in the leaves with the soil or should i wait for the leaves to decompose separately? How soon should I plant the bare root roses in the ground once delivered?
Sorry, my answer might be late here. Don’t mix the leaves, let 5hem go through the decomposition process. Those leaves tend to clump together in the soil and form moisture barriers. As for your second question. I let roots stand in water overnight in the garage and plant next day. At least several hours, if there is no time…

I received them Monday afternoon and did soak them overnight and planted them in the ground yesterday morning, I did put some plant biotone for root development and mix some steer manure with the existing soil. I did a little round trench around the roses for watering. I'm thinking I should mulch over? what do you think? I wish you had your new roses in so I can see how you're going to plant them on your video.
@@loydacrespo2535 I usually mulch a week or two later when consistent warm weather arrives. Plus I do fertilize after planting and before applying mulch. My roses just arrived and I have a cold, it is raining outside, gosh, what bad timing!

Will you be soaking your roses until you get better or have someone plant them for you? Thank you so much for your reply on mulching. I will definitely mulch when it begins to consistently warm up. We've been having a few morning showers the past few days. But I see that it'll warm up to the 80's in the next few days. I might mulch at that time. What fertilizer do you use for your roses?
Hi Olga, what season would you say is best for planting roses and also, do container roses planted in the height of summer do as well as bare root roses planted in winter?
If you live in warmer climate, fall is just marginally better. For me, in cold zone of 6/7 with cold winters, spring is best. As for container roses, it all depends on care. If you care well after container roses, they have great chance for long life, as well as roses planted in fall. (winter? Do you live in frost free zone?)
@@OlgaCarmody I live in the Lake District-UK. I wouldn't say it is completely frost free but maybe slightly milder winters compared to others. Thank you for the reply.

@@OlgaCarmody I bought a potted one early this year. It has been brilliant, it’s in a pot as I only have tiny back yard, but it’s huge and still has buds on. Only issue I’ve had is aphids. They’re still around. Do you get them and what do you do?
@@joannewilliams5589 Aphids attack my roses only for a short time in spring, I use water or horticultural oil. My issues with roses are black spot, unfortunately. Enjoy your rose!
