@@MarcKloos There is not a country more climatically blessed than South Africa :). I am from the Western Cape. It is beyond beautiful. Living here, I refer to the Western Cape as God's garden. He grows beautiful flowers here, and Trevor is one of them.
@@TheCatBilbo Trevor deserves every accolade he gets. He's amazing. Truth is there are many amazing people in South Africa. Their fight for life is hard from day one. My prayer is that Trevor will help to uplift the people of South Africa, who at the moment are hard-pressed to get a mouthful of food.

I’ve always loved Trevor’s outside perspective on American politics and his care of world news. We miss that now in late night tv.
He wasn't great at doing that on TDS. On TDS he really only did that properly in interviews and on Behind The Scenes. The writers were clearly American so the jokes did not fit him at all. I hated his jokes when he was host. He's good when he's being himself. He wasn't himself on TDS.
Don't get me wrong, I think it was a great opportunity for him, and I hope it takes him onto better things, but the daily monologue was mostly cringe. The cultural references did not ring true ... cos they weren't, and the political references were irrelevant bc he was not a citizen. I'm glad he moved on.

Also, even though some of the jokes felt forced, there were times when he went off script and actually spoke his mind. Remember the power of that show was given to him & he done a great job filling those shoes.

I met Trevor when I spotted him outside a restaurant I was sitting in during a visit to Kiev in 2018 for the UEFA Champions Leagur Final. I approached him and his two friends (male and female). Nobody knew who he was. We spoke for 25mins at the entrance. He was so engaging with me as a complete stranger. A rarity.

As an American traveling, Germany had 14 different non-alcohol beers. Went on to Scotland and asked the waiter what non-alcohol beers they had and he said, "Now why would you do that?" Still laugh about that.
We in Germany also have what we call "Radler". This is beer, mixed with lemonade (lemonade like, let’s say Sprite or 7-Up) and therefore only with half the amount of alcohol than in regular beer. And in Germany we tend to mix beer with other non-alcoholic beverages as well if it tastes well.
Seriously, who drinks beer for the taste?

The playing of the US national anthem at sporting events was started for non-patriotic reasons during WWII. Here were healthy, draft-age males playing a boy's game for money (baseball) while mother's sons were being killed overseas. To over backlash and pretend like they were patriotic, baseball team owners' started playing the national anthem.
It used to be mandatory for Indian cinemas to play the national anthem before movies as well, which really felt ridiculous. It's no longer compulsory, but I think some cinemas still do it.

Last week tonight is the best program, as it has like... the best crew in the entire world. And Stephen here is my comfort late night show. But Trevor? nah mate, the absolute best host. Even more so than J. Stewart and here's why: we all stand for Stewart, simply because he is a good guy. He knows what's up to such a degree that even a lot of republicans admire. But at the same time, that's just... "common" sense isn't?.
Trevor on the other hand, was so... bold. New blood. New perspectives. Great ideas. An outside view to reexamine a country in a more objective way.
Especially loved him during covid.
Remember when he first got the job and people were extremely critical?
Trevor was destined to be where he is, he fits perfectly.
The interrupting & clarifications between Noah and Stephen, particularly at 3:26-4:56, gives off such sibling energy. 😅

in the philippines, we had a very similar election in 2022. it was akin to Obama vs Trump. On our side was the most productive VP our country's ever had, on the other side was the son of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos. The lead up to the elections tore families and friends apart. There were a lot of trolling and threats on social media. Marcos Jr won.
Two years later, we've moved on with our lives, and it turns out, Marcos Jr was on the liberal side. He even turned his back on former allies that had personal agendas in pushing him to run. Those former allies (the President from the previous administration, and his daughter who became Marcos' current VP) are the ones with the rabid fanbase a la MAGA-heads (look up President Rodrigo Duterte for more context). Any chance they get, they'll still harass and insult anyone who mentions or shows support for the former VP, even though they won.
I love his interviews so much. I haven't kept up with his specials yet and need to, but hearing him just talk like this was always my favorite. So insightful.
He also started his own podcast which has conversations kind of like this! It's called What now? With Trevor Noah 🤗🫶🏽

Ive always appreciated his perspective on American politics -- and even non-political issues. He's intelligent and compassionate, and we need more of that.

Also many Africans in South Africa actually have worse poverty than many African Americans do. Sure they are people of African descent who are well off in both countries (mostly because of luck, family connections, or financial aid), but most are still very much in poverty. That is because of past racist laws, institutions, and current more subtle systemic racism (yes it exists).

As an American who grew up outside of the USA, I always thought it was very weird and cult'ish to have national anthem and standing ovation at a sporting event that isn't internationally competing.

Americans sing their anthem all the time, first thing in class and also in sporting events, they wave their flags everywhere, they swear to God in courts, the Bible is in public schools, Hollywood make Americans believe the USA saves Humanity in every movie, Veterans are honoured in various occasions… All that participates in the cult of war and the sense of imperialism that exists in this country. Most Americans feel entitled while they really shouldn’t. Maybe the worst thing with Americans is the love for money. They’ve associated God with the dollar… and another thing is how fake they can be with one another, which is something tourists very often tell about Americans. That’s because nothing is free in the US and people see a possibility to make money in every new relationship. Americans learn to hate people who are different. It starts internally: republicans hate democrats, white folks hate black folks and Latinos, rich people despise the poor (thinking they’re poor because they deserve it). In foreign affairs, Americans unite together in the hate of Arabic and so-said non-capitalist countries.
Americans love guns and will always vote for millionaires. Isn’t that sick? Once again, they love money, so any millionaire is a model by principle, even if it’s Donald Trump. When it comes to the gun culture, that’s partly a legacy from the gold rush but also because people distrust each other (which started during the gold rush) and rightfully their government.
So, basically, what makes the USA a country is the dollar, common hate for anticapitalism among American citizens and the wrong idea that the USA is the greatest democracy in the universe and have the duty to spread democracy all around the planet.
But this unity is only possible with some brainwashing (anthem, flags, God mentions, dollar) that an American can finally realize by traveling abroad.

I thought Trevor was a decent daily show host, but after my friend took me to see his standup a couple years ago, it totally elevated my opinion of him. He is absolutely hilarious, and more talented than I was giving him credit for. Plus, he seems like one of the nicest guys in show business
I felt the same way but after reading his memoir. It's not a typical celebrity memoir and his childhood in South Africa was crazy. He opens up the book about surviving a carjacking as a kid and it just changes your impression of him.
I like how smart and reflected Trevor Noah is.
Noah would never have gotten this job if Stewart did not quit. Point is…Noah was always a distant 2nd to Stewart’s wit and charm. He did his best but how do you replace John Stewart? He not only didn’t…he couldn’t!

I love how Trevor is insightful and gives well thought out answers especially when it pertains to America from an outsiders perspective. It felt super awkward, like Colbert trying to one up noah and interrupting him and have the last laugh, even trying to break down his metaphors and make Noah's story and jokes look stupid and Colbert's look better.
It's almost as if Colbert felt threatened that if his jokes were better, then maybe Noah would also take over as hidt instead if Colbert.
Too much awkwardness and tension. Didn't feel like old friends at all to me. I don't think they get along or like each other much.

Trevor has had as much of a positive impact on human society as anyone with his humorous insight, and uncanny knack for getting to the heart of a matter without offending others.
I hated that he left the show, but if he can take his unique perspective to a wider audience with appearances such as this, then Godspeed Trevor.

Don't blame the people, blame the ridiculous "largest minority wins even if it's not a majority" election system the US has. In that system, letting criticism build for your party's guy helps elect the guy you disagree with even more. So people naturally get afraid that criticizing their own guy will get someone even worse in power.
Sometimes, it is ridiculous though. The current president of Philippine is Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the son of an infamous corruptor-dictator, the late Ferdinand Marcos. The South African and New Zealand national anthems are also really beautiful and worth listening to. Both are multi-lingual anthems. In terms of the flag and patriotism I think that patriotism can easily be a gateway drug to nationalism. Patriotism on it's own is not bad but it is becoming a tool to isolate nations and create "them and us" mindsets. Someone who is patriotic and well travelled is usually very understanding of other nations and feels a bond to other countries. Someone who is patriotic and has not travelled at all is often very narrow minded and not really someone with a good understanding of other people that share the world with them but are different to them.
Nkosi Sikelele has to be the one that makes me cry. Because the first time I saw it play as an anthem and not a protest song, i was a teenager watching Nelson Mandela take power. The most unfathomable feeling.

If Trevor thinks all anthems are about how beautiful the country is, he should listen to the French one. It's literally describing a bloodbath ! To be fair, it dates back to the French revolution, which were violent times.

Really? Such a nirvana Europe is? Do your homework. Homily as garbage. Or they may not fear as much but there is a whole lot of hate bubbling under the surface pal. I just can't stand garbage cutesy homilies- as if we can all learn from your unmitigated genius.
But they can't figure it out on their own. Create a closed circuit in any group and you will eventually get them all to repeat the same message. No human should live in an imprisonment of the mind, imposed by greedy dictators who think their will is supreme. How have we not risen above this as a species?
