FAQ
Q) Why are there comments from a week ago when this video has just gone live today?
A) Patrons usually have early access to videos. I'll show the first version of a video on Patreon and often the feedback I get results in a video going through further revisions to improve it. e.g. Fix audio issues, clarify points, add extra footage or cut extraneous things out. The video that goes live on youtube is the final version. - Věda a technologie
First we got appliances with unnecessary apps attached to them , now we are getting apps with unnecessary appliances attached to them. I believe we have come full circle...
wait, we're waiting for the unnecessary app that requires an unnecessary appliance to truly come full circle.
@@kindisc Juicero
Kids need that sort of tactile feedback though so I can sort of appreciate this.
@@kindisc you mean like a thermomix?
@@theslamdancekid True, but I imagine this gimmick would get old very quickly. First of all, for the age of kid this is aimed at, they would have to ask the parents to set this up, which means an extra hurdle for the kids - they cannot just pick it up and play with it (plus the parents would get tired of this pretty soon as well). And if it is something the parents try to encourage, like "Hey Timmy come play with this cool globe, you can learn some stuff") most kids would probably be not that interested. And if it is frequently glitchy, like shown in the video ("please center the globe") they would loose interest pretty quickly even if they were enjoying it.
"A lightweight hollow, hard plastic, lightly textured ball" it may be. But it is the world to me.

Take a bow son. 😂
Awesome.
I see what you did there! You did that funny thing with words 🤓
Hahaha brilliant
I downloaded the app and showed it Google Earth on a PC screen and sure enough it recognized it as a Hobonichi Globe :)
I think I'm gonna have to try that now.
Edit, just tried it using Google Earth Pro, and the only place I could get it to pick up was over Africa. Everywhere else it would lose it's tracking.
So much for that copy protection idea....
Hacks
I wonder how long it'll be till I can download a copy to print off and paste over a globe :p
Can you go to the ISS and try that too?
2:14 watching this video from Northern India and I can confirm that the heatmap seems to be pretty accurate.
My first question was whatever it will work with any other globe :) But I think you are right about the copy protection thing.
Edit: someone bellow added another important insight: since app is free developers do not have to pay Apple, Google parts of their income!
I'm know there is a one off 25usd join fee and a lot more for apple but I belive they do still have to pay costs for the app. And I imagine there is a server or 2 and some apis powering the app. While I still think its a massive margin it'll cost more than you think
The globe is patented, its what recoupes development costs.
It's possible that the clouds on the physical globe act as a further form of drm, and you need those specific clouds for the app to work.
The greatest gift you could get a flat earthers 😂
My goodness, I remember having a map in my primary school classroom with sculpted heightmaps, and watching this video made me instantly remember
Aren’t these 3D height maps not a very common thing? I mean - I have such map in a frame on my wall, few of my friends have these vacuum-formed 3D maps in a form of postcards, and you can buy these in every other bookstore and office-/school-supply store these days.
6:02 "or if a day of the week has an y in it" - yes, that is why I am watching this channel, these nice descriptions of appliances, gadgets and tech stuff with the slight ironic tone in it. Please keep up this good work!
Yeah I've paused the video half way through to go get me one of these beauties!
_one purchase later..._
Right, let's un-pause and enjoy the rest of the vid!
I would have sold a globe that would prolly fool the AR for half the price! You got scammed! :D :D
I used to be a kid and I could see me enjoying the AR aspect, I was always fascinated by magic as a kid.
Great review! For those who don't know, Hobonichi is a stationery and lifestyle company from Japan, founded by a former Nintendo game designer, famous for the MOTHER series of RPG games. Among other things, they make the world's best planners, prized among fountain pen users for their excellent paper.

Back in the '90s, I worked for a succession of Internet tech companies (as in, companies that made tech the Internet ran on, not companies that made random tech and sold it on the Internet). The joke in the industry at the time was that if you could figure out a way to shoehorn a laser into a product, however obviously superfluous, it would automatically become irresistible candy for investors and customers alike. It didn't matter what the question was, the answer was "We'll use a laser for that," and bucketloads of money would appear.

There is another reason: if you buy the globe and leave the application for free, you will no longer pay the 30% commission to apple and google
Plus you will have a free tracking globe to play with if the app goes out of support.
Google Earth should add a weather layer ,that would be very cool now I seen it on this app.
Kind of reminds me of the old Nintendo Wii channel for the weather. Yeah that would be a cool feature for them to add.

I found this to be a really nice take on app development and strategy for selling them.
Oh, by the way: I have kids. I showed them parts of this video. They were not enthusiastic about the app. The fact you cannot swipe the globe is something they think is stupid 😅
The globe needs a motorised base. When you swipe it on the screen it rotatesthe actual globe.
@@Ascania See, I say go whole-hog. Instead of a motorized base, made the globe itself a contiguous OLED (or whatever) display with capacitive touch control. The app could then be used to zoom in on something, or to choose various overlays right on the globe like political borders, weather, day/night cycle, flight and ship trackers, and so on. That would be cool and useful.
@@TheRealColBosch yeah and how much would that cost? The motorised base is a cheap and simple improvement.
@@SuPerbMusiCFan Techmoan reviewed a spherical display that would suit. Honestly it may be cheaper than a motor system that allows two axes of controlled movement. It would certainly be easier to build and program.
@@John_Ridley Not really. Couple of rollers on a 90 degree angle and a couple steppers and you're good. You could fit it all in that useless plastic base they already include lol

There’s a part of me that wants to walk around with my phone in one hand and the globe in the other, trying to use them for navigation.
But watch our for that cross traffic. It's a Killer.
And then you can try patting your stomache and tapping your head simultaneously afterwards for good measure.
Appreciate the scepticism, but I think there is something to having a physical interaction with a globe and seeing different stuff pop up. It might have worked better with some AR glasses, better tracking and being able to hold the globe in your hand.
Indeed, AR really needs wide FOV comfortable lightweight glasses to work well. Holding up a device at a tag is always just an empty novelty experience. And of course such glasses are a ways off, HoloLens and Magic Leap both have a tiny FOV and a fairly bulky headset. But once we get there with it, AR experiences do offer a lot of potential.
As always you made something I've no interest in, interesting. Thank you for taking one for the team on something like this, along with that overpriced toaster. Love seeing your vids pop up in my listings. Keep up the great work. All the best from Ireland
I mean I'm glad they are still pushing anything physical kids do need that .
Yeah I agree, this could have great uses in education.

But then, since it's made for small children, maybe it shouldn't need to be a smartphone app at all.
If they could've found a way to make the globe a self-contained interactive educational toy, that would be a great physical playing/learning experience.
But idk, looking at a physical object through your smartphone screen seems like the lamest thing imaginable to me.
If I was a kid, I think I'd be blown away by what apps can do and I'd be equally impressed by a good, versatile electronic toy, but I wouldn't be interested in this.

I was thinking the same thing as you: the app itself wouldn't sell for 26 pounds so they used that globe. Sneaky, but at least it's not subscription or micro transactions
Thank you for always creating such entertaining and educational content! ❤️
Good for kids to think of the world as a globe instead of a projection, since projections make Europe and North America look massive. A globe puts them in their right place (and size)
Happy to see a puppet again, even briefly.
It would be cool if an astronaut downloaded the app, and tried it with the real earth.
I love how those muppets are his go to "add your own picture" choice.

At least they have New Zealand on the map!! Even in the right place I might add.

"Flippin' 'Eck! I'm as big as the world!"
I feel like this would be a good Christmas present for a kid. At-least, that's the kind of gift I usually got.
And by putting all the price in the globe they're also circumventing Google's share of appstore purchases.
They really have been cleaver. Regardless if it works !
But they do have to give Amazon a cut of the globe price. Not sure what the split is, but it might be the same as if they sold the app for a few bucks.
@@TheThingNG From doing a quick google, Amazon takes an 8-15% cut, while the appstore takes a 30% cut.
(the appstore cut is going down soon to 15%, but the decision to sell this came way before that)
If the day of the week has a Y in it - Absolutely Hilarious. Please bring back the puppets !!
What fun! I'll never take technology for granted. We live in amazing times. Glitches, or not.
I could really see this kind of AR application used at an interactive educational center, like a Planetarium or Youth Science Center. Trap the ipad and globe in a plexiglass box with hole cut outs that kids can reach into. The pedestal for the globe would be anchored at the correct distance and the holes for the kids would be just slightly too small to fit the globe out.
There you go Science educators, free idea. Heck, I could probably even build it for you if you asked nicely.
The intros on this channel just get better and better.
Interesting find
Thanks for sharing your experience with all of us 👍😀
actually a really neat educational idea for kids, i think it looks pretty good
If the base had a few motorised rollers in it they could have made it possible to turn the globe by swiping the mobile screen. B ut as you said, that'd make it cost more than £2 to make. I'm assuming it won't work with any old globe either. Like it's looking for specific patterns this one has.
7:00 FYI, I've done some of this for work, and sadly no - this in fact seems to be the current state of the art... at least mostly. Surely they could have tweaked it a little bit better here and there ; but overall that's what one gets for now...
EDIT: And to be perfectly honest with you I was in fact pretty impressed with the tracking quality for the first half of the video ; as it turns out, one can "sell" these things and "pretend they work" much better on camera than in real life!
This was a really helpful review. Not that I'm surprised, all of your videos are really well put together and thought-out. I hope you're having a great day. Thanks again!
3:38: "Not the end of the world". Nice touch.
I love the idea of AR but I have yet to see an implementation that really seemed to make much sense. Hopefully there is a good idea for it out there somewhere, I look forward to finding it.
I think having physical globe has some advantage for children because they realize earth is a real physical object not just something drawn on the screen of the phone and they can touch it.
You never fail to make whatever the doo daa your reviewing really interesting you genuinely do
The dinosaur overlay made my 32 year old self super excited
I mean, it's fairly aimed towards kids, but it's also really well made. Just think - for all us old geezers who grew up in the late 80s, early 90s - all we had were dusty encyclopedias and such... barey anything worth reading off of computers. Think of having this back in the day, it would be pretty tantalizing. ^_^
I really don't know how a child would react to this. Would they think it was cool or would they prefer if it was just an app without the physical globe. I definitely can't anticipate what kids like or don't like - toys that sell well often make little sense to adults. See Hitclips.
Children these days are spoiled with interactive stuff, trust me, I got two of these demons. I don’t think that they would be impressed by a plastic glove. 😂
It's nice, but the biggest problem as with all app based things is: How long will it work? If they shutdown the server or don't do updates for new phones, you only have an expensive and useless blue plastic ball ;)
On the other hand, other apps doing a similar thing would presumably still work on it?
There’s a hilarious CZcams video of a 1 year old raised with an iPad given a physical magazine, they expect the magazine to behave the same way (zooming in etc.) and get frustrated when it doesn’t.
czcams.com/video/aXV-yaFmQNk/video.html
Not sure about the "hilarious" part.
I wonder if they think it's still hilarious when this child is 8 years old, lies on the couch all day long, only interested in tiktok, CZcams, like a tablet junkie.
It's a little bit sad
Agree with the above comments. The child is growing up with an utter detachment from the real world. Supposed progress? Very sad indeed.

I also found the physical globe pretty useful. I was looking for a Earth Model with no letters for my project
My house doesn't need another lump of plastic for something I've essentially already got.
When I clicked on the video, I assumed it's one of those projection spheres. I think I've seen those a few years back. And technology around them (no pun) surely must've progressed.
I'm not a small child but it got me excited. Maybe in the future when AR will be more advanced it will be a nice gadget.

You still got it! 🤍
I remember loving just exploring the Encarta on the PC in the 90s. Juggling a phone in front of the physical globe seems unwieldy, when you could just turn and zoom the earth on the touchscreen with standard multitouch controls.
Encarta? Damn that shit's the best, too bad it won't work in Windows 10 anymore because Flash died.
@@bmhater1283 It didn't use to need Flash back then, Flash didn't exist back in 96. I have a Win98 VM i could spin it up in if i can find it.
Finally something that is educational.
I'm sure this is not going to sell!!!!
No cheese sandwich today? What you said at 7:00 was my thought at the start: Why require the ball? There are plenty of good free data and map sources (google maps/earth, CIA world factbook, etc.). And if you're buying for kids, there's probably a good kids' atlas in book shops. That thing doesn't add anything that you can get elsewhere for less.
I tried the app with a dusty old globe from the 1970's I had lying around, but it didn't work. Maybe it was confused by strange unknown places like "Union of Soviet Socialist Republics" and "East Germany".
Pretty cool. But you are right. Best to see it being demonstrated by you than actually buying it unless they can keep adding features to it like "all the satellites circling the planet" allowing you to zoom in on them and see their names and history. Definitely would need to be about to swipe and zoom easily on the ap. Thanks for showing this.

Have you done a video on physical copy protection? Like that dial-a-pirate wheel for Monkey Island you mentioned, and/or Lenslokf? If not, you should!
I seem to recall there are several examples of this. While a look at one example might be a stretch for a 10 minute video, spotlighting a few of them would be a simple, seldom seen, and very interesting topic for a YT video.

I've no doubt this will make future appearances in video - with the puppets - which I welcome.
My cousins use to have a childerns toy similar to this idea it was a plastic kids toy with a powered rotating globe with a plastic plane with a built in viewing glass connected to a base with a joystick and couple buttons. You turn it on and the globe spins, the joystick moves the plane up and down while the globe spins, press the button and the globe stopped spinning and the toy would tell you the country the planes glass was over or another mode with facts I believe.

I was thinking the same that you don't need the physical ball world but kids would probably love it.
There is a company in Australia making Living Wine Labels. The convicts photo tell a short story of how they were made convicts. the only catch is you have to buy the wine labels that are supported.

Great insight after the regular "review". Now I wonder if my globe at home will work with this app
Ironically I’ve thought of this idea in a VERY similar manner a little while ago, but great showcase!
We used to get all this info with a nice big colorful atlas !!!!
Maybe the tracking could be improved by using different lighting. Also, i think youre spot on on their business model.
If they want to include a physical object to use as a kind of AR device for an app then I'm sure there are clever and fun ways to make the physical object more useful than simply as copy protection. You can definitely come up with some purpose for it that ties into the app.
That is pretty cool, but yeah the globe is totally not needed. I love static and interactive maps like that. That's awesome you mentioning software cracking. I only know of software cracking from a friend. Sounds like a good idea for a future video.
