    Shuttlecocks are great and very underused here in the states. Never thought of adding tinsel to the thorax . Brilliant! Looks like you could use the left overs from the 14 to tie the 22. Cut the stem back and pull the CDC fibers forward? Maybe? Just trying to squeeze all I can out of my CDC.

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před 4 lety

      Hi Mark,
      I normally just cut the hair off with scissors and then I blend the fur in the coffer grinder like you said..I do like the squirrel dubbing as I've used it on many patterns over the years..I'm glad you liked the fly...

    Hello Davie,
    Well, I'm able to watch you tying again after 9 months. I've really missed it.
    There's a thing I've wondered having to do with hook sizing and the Tiemco 2487BL here brought it back to mind. When a hook gape is an amount of "X's" large or small, is it the same as, say, with a Kamasan B160 that is 3x short... the shank of a B160 #14 (gape) is the size of a standard #16 gape's shank?
    If so, the 2487BL's 2x wide gape is 2/3's again the standard size of a #22 (nearly the gape size of a #20). Is that right, or ???
    Thanks for the help, Davie. Hopefully I won't miss any of your tying again ever... or at the least, any time soon.
    Mike

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před 3 lety

      Hi Mike,
      I've hooks from many companies and almost all have their own ideas of what a hook gape, length and size should be as I'm sure if I sat down a size 14 standard hook they would all be different and even in the hooks you described..I remember when all companies stuck to the standard sizes but not now, it's more down to there being a lot more styles of hooks for us to buy so I size them to suit myself for the patterns I'm tying..I hope you are well and thank you for coming back..
      All the very best Davie

      @@DavieMcPhail Thank you for that, Davie. At least I've got my Darrel Martin book as reference to standard hook relationships. I wished I had the eye for it I believe you have.

  • @fransjooste2331
    @fransjooste2331 Před 4 lety +1

    Great pattern! Is there any specific practical/fishing reason for you tying these on a down-eye hook instead of a straight-eye one? Same question for nymphs and streamers as well?

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Frans,
      I'm glad you liked the fly as it is lovely pattern to fish and tye..Down eyed hooks are the norm and far easier to find in all style and sizes though I have tyed an odd pattern on straight eyed hooks and it wouldn't bother me to use either...
      All the very best Davie.

    • @fransjooste2331
      @fransjooste2331 Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Davie.
      Much appreciated. I haven't been tying for long, but prefer the look of a straight eye hook, so good to know my preference won't have any detrimental impact on the 'fishability' of my flies.
      Quick question on fly tyers wax... I prepped mine the same way as your video from a few years ago shows, but the pieces have gone hard and brittle. Any idea why that could have happened and can it be fixed?
      Keep well and looking forward to the next video.
      Regards
      Frans

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Frans, It can happen from time to time as they can dry out, just take a small piece off when you need it rather than doing it all at once like I do as it should last far longer.. The reason I do this is because I use a lot more than the average tyer and keep the wax in a sealed bag to stop it drying out..Stay safe as well..
      All the very best Davie..

    • @DavieMcPhail
      @DavieMcPhail  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi dongil123,
      Uni-8/0 would be easier to use as it's slight finer and doesn't spread as much as the UTC thread, I needed to use this colour to suit the pattern I was tying..

      Hi ئیسلام شانازیە Islam is a proude ,
      This represents a hatching fly just as it emerges from the water, the body sits below the surface and the wing is above as this is what keeps it afloat..It for catching mainly trout though most freshwater fish will feed on them..
