  • California Spiny Lobster Tips - All You Need To Know
    Rodney Marquez of BDOutdoors shares tips on how to hoop net for California spiny lobster, including regulations, techniques and the gear required to succeed. Rodney explains 3 categories; rules and regulations, how to measure lobster, and the preferred gear for catching lobster.
    “The first thing you need to do is get the proper licenses in order to go hoop netting for lobster,” said Rodney. “Then you have to learn how to measure them properly to determine if the lobsters are of legal size to keep. Then you need to have the hoop nets and related gear in order to catch them. It takes a little set up, but it is well worth it to catch your own lobster dinner!”
    Rodney was using a rigid Promar lobster hoop net that is available at your local tackle shop. He also describes the bait options and equipment associated with the hoop net. The buoy and light combo and bait container are integral parts to the set up. “Don’t forget, there are required numbers that go on your floats, so make sure you’re legal,” says Rodney.

    Correction: Use gear code 2 for rigid lobster hoop net. Gear code 1 for flat hoop net. Thanks for the correction guys!

      How do u ward off seals ???? I’ve been having serious problems with the seals stealing my bait, tearing into my nets even with zip ties

      Phukk EU try using DARK bait cages/tubes such as “Roach Coach” OR HD commercial wire Cages from LP Fishing Supply. Check out the video that Dave Hansen posted about making your own PVC tubes out of black composite material.

    Great Video Rodney. If I drop a hoop net from a boat at 30 feet, but I have 70 ft. of rope, how do you secure the excess rope? How much bait do you insert in a cage, as much as I can jam in there?

    Can you do a more detailed video of your set up. What materials you used and the reasoning behind them? Why 40-50 feet line? What depth are you using your gear? What hoop nets seem to work best for you. Are those lights battery operated? On/Off switches for them? Do they have ready to fish lobster kits? Also how do you retrieve your nets? How do you keep track of where your buoys have been placed in the water?

  • @Miguel_PuroGuasave_Rodriguez

    Hey BDOutdoors I went out yesterday to Long Beach and had no luck at all. Do you know any good spots? Also is a boat better then the pier when it comes to hoop netting? Thanks for the info.

    • @spartan_8712
      @spartan_8712 Před 3 lety

      You just tie the end of the rope to the pier railing. Don’t think you need a buoy. That’s only when your on a boat or kayak. As for the go ID, I’ll make sure to ask.

    • @joshuapotter1869
      @joshuapotter1869 Před 3 lety +2

      Amanda Montano - when your line goes slack. You won’t be using a buoy. Just line connected to the ring lines and the other end to you tied off on the pier railing.

    Good info Rodney! While I think the salmon heads work, I have personally had much better luck with freshly cut mackerel it seems to carry more of scent because of it's oily nature. I know the salmon heads work, but mack is the way to go!

      Thanks Bo! I totally agree! When I went lobster fishing that night, I did notice when I combined the freshly dead macks AND the salmon heads, the legal lobster were there vs just having salmon heads alone. Thanks for watching Bo!

    This activity has been ruined thanks to the internet.Good luck out there newbies.What used to be a great fishery is now a shitshow of idiots and aggressive rude people.The fishing sure isn't what it used to be.The good old days are gone.And a big thanks to Promar for making a net that allows any kook with a floating object to lobster fish.
