Not too long ago back in 2020, I reviewed Ford's latest Crossover SUV; the Puma ST Line X - a car I struggled to agree with for many reasons ranging from the price, the Fiesta platform and lack of practicality based on it's "bigger" body shape
Now, I've been blessed to road test their latest trim variation which so happens to be their Performance version; the Puma ST again it shares everything from the Fiesta ST - no bad thing as now the Puma truly sits in a class of it's own!
However the question is, being a 'Performance Ford' product carrying a 'ST' badge - does it make more sense than the other Puma trim levels? Watch today's video to find out
*DISCLAIMER: Unfortunately, typical UK weather conditions (wind) decided to blow my main camera off it's tripod and smash/land on my polariser resulting in the blurred line faintly showing on some of the footage

*What would you buy? The Puma ST or a Honda FK8 Civic Type R?*

@The Bump Test Guy The Civics looks are definitely subjective but once you drive one, it's an after thought
Thanks for watching👍🏼
I’m ok with the looks of the Type R and it sounds like it’s great car to drive. I’ve a ST line X puma and I’ve been disappointed with it. I like the looks and handling but there are too many niggles for me to forgive it. UPDATE:. I’ve traded the ST line X for a full fat Puma ST and I love it!
The thing with Ford’s is no one ever actually pays the list price because Ford dealers will usually knock thousands off. I just got a quote for a Puma ST for 25k. Where as Honda will never budge especially on type R models. So really talking 6k difference....
@@slinkey123 I just got a €7k discount on a new Puma ST.
@@slinkey123 Yes, depends on the dealer and whether you are buying cash or finance
Type R is their flagship car that actually hold their value so there's no incentive for dealers to hand out discounts
If you're financing, you think you're getting a deal but really it's taking away the front end depreciation and then increasing the risk of the value of the car at the end (leaving less to no positive equity in it)
Thanks for watching
Just picked up a Puma St in grey matter with performance pack. Very impressed how it handles. Also the new performance seats are a lot more comfortable than the Recaros that were originally fitted.
Very nice combination, good to hear you didn't get Mean Green (a very common colour at the moment haha!)
Yes indeed, the new Ford Performance seats are much better all round compared to the Recaros
Thanks for watching!
Bought one & love it & in green 😍
Congrats Craig 👏 Thanks for tuning in!
Ordered a new Fiesta ST3 about 7 months ago. Thanks for the video.
Thanks for stopping by!
I’ve just bought mean green puma st. Delivery September. Performance and assistance pack. Well under 30k 27.5k so shop around. Interesting video and informative.
Thanks for sharing Ian! Always worth using buying tools to get access to new car deals 👍🏼 Congrats on the purchase, you'll definietly won't be missed with that colour 😀
Just picked up my ST in white… absolutely love it!
Congrats! Glad you're enjoying it
Thanks for watching!
Great vid, thanks. Im still tempted by the puma st as the type R looks like a transformer imo.
Thanks Kavan! You could always buy a Type R and call it Optimus Prime 🤣🤣🤣
Great video mate, I can't wait to get my hands on the Puma ST. Mind you, given the choice, I'd rather have the CTR.
Thanks for watching buddy! Going to be an interesting weekend when you have the Puma 😎
We both know it's the CTR FTW 👌
Puma st for me, just ordered a brand new 72 plate puma st in mean green, delivery due September October time can't wait, it's a beautiful looking car, civic type r is nice too but I prefer the look of puma st especially in green, I think it's a case of each to their own preference and what you use the car for, for me it be daily driver an plenty room for picking up my kids on weekends and plenty room for my camping gear an mountain bike in the back plus it looks quirky an cool an it's plenty quick enough, great car from ford 👌👍💚🏴 greetings from morayshire Scotland 🏴👌
Congrats on the purchase, you won't be disappointed I'm sure - I imagine September/October currently seems like a lifetime away! 🙈
Thank you for your positive/polite opinion and of course spending the time to watch the video, all the best John 👍
'I WILL GET THIS CAR, IN METALLIC VINGALE DESERT ISLAND BLUE TITANIUM, OK?' "BLESS U!"
👀 YOU'RE WELCOME KAYE, THANKS FOR WATCHING!
Nice vid. Great opening car shots.
I'd take a Fezzer...
A man of class and sense 😎👍🏼
Thanks for watching pal!
Great video, like the talk to camera whilst driving 👍 completely agree about the steering, way to vague when pushing on but overall a nice car, not sure If I’d have the fk8 as I’ve never driven one, I imagine the Honda would be more reliable in the long run though. Hard choice 🤷♂️
Cheers again for all your help on the drone footage mate!
Of course, thanks for the continued support too 🙌
Hi just seen this video again git a st line x on order but can't help thinking I will miss the power of the st as I have a mk8 st2 .also I know you hate the steering but did you find the steering a little lighter on the puma st compered to the fiesta mk8 st steering and the puma st steering lock is about the same as the fiesta
It's been a while since I tested the Puma ST, but personally I'd safely say there isn't a noticeable difference between the two especially when they are both sharing the same platform
Yo yo. Nice review! As for the car, I’m still not sure I see the point of it 🙈 I think I’d rather have a Focus ST estate if I wanted a bit more boot space.
Thanks Gary, appericate you watching and sharing feedback 👍🏼
Exactly why, crossovers make no sense 🤣🙈
It's amazing to see the difference in response I'm getting from ST Line to ST videos
just picked up the mean green with the performance pack 4 days ago love it ,got £18750 trade in for my 2020 puma st line x (16000 miles) so yes oh yes 😲😲
Congrats! Glad you love it
Thanks for watching 👍
The performance pack doesn’t come as standard btw
Yes it does, also comes as standard on the Fiesta ST3; check for yourself on the Ford UK build configuration tool
Thanks for watching
It doesn’t - I have just ordered one and the performance pack was extra. Standard on the Fiesta ST.
@@cwlashton They have changed it then as when I tested the car it showed on the press specification that the Performance Pack was standard
They have also changed the price of 'Mean Green' too
How stiff is suspension? Im mid 40s and our Uk roads are so pitted so what its like as a daily?
And what is real world MPG?
Depending on the car you currently own that'd be a better way to compare it
For me, I found it bouncy at low speeds but more rewarding at higher speeds I.e. B Roads and dual carriageways
Best way is to trst drive one, ride comfort I find is a individual preference - you'll have my opinion of it and then another journalist/reviewer will praise it as Roll Royce quality 🤣
As for MPG, 35-40mpg is a fair representation to real world figures I got, again depends on the right foot
Hope this helps, I actually have a facelift Fiesta ST this week so I'll factor in the ride and fuel again for reference
Thanks for watching and commenting 👍🏼
I've got a st2 fiesta st with performance pack love it but the puma is growing on me didn't like it to start with great video. Ps I know what you mean about the steering
Thank god, I'm not the only one that has a problem with the steering feel 🙈 ... Thanks for watching and sharing your feedback Andrew, consider subscribing to support 'PocketRockets', there will be more Ford content coming in the next few months 👍
Ordered mine this week, actually really really wanted a civic type r, but I need 5 seats
Congrats Tommo on the purchase! I'd argue the third seat in the Puma is pointless but if you have three kids or smaller adults in the back, it shouldn't be an issue
Thanks for watching & commenting 🙌
@@PocketRockets yeah mate got three youngsters in the back of me fiesta st currently
As you have driven both the st line and now the st puma what one would you buy if you was to get a puma ??
Puma ST Andrew for me, the engine and drive train platform bring the car to life (much more than the ST Line) but that is to be expected
Problem is the price difference is insane so your question is a tricky one to answer 🙈
But if money was no object then yes the Puma ST is one I'd have
Thanks for watching and commenting, all the best 👍🏼
@@PocketRockets I've got a mk8 st2 at the moment with the performance pack .but I need a little more room as we have the dog a our first baby one the way I've driven both now and its hard to choose st line will be cheaper
ST Line will be cheaper to run, correct but you'll miss the power, torque and cornering that you get your ST, wouldn't bother you'd be going backwards
I'd say shop around on the market, test drive other competitors like the Kona N, VW T Roc R etc much more powerful rivals with loads more refinement
If you didn't already have a Fiesta ST I would recommend the Puma ST, a shame the Puma ST could of come with some unique parts to make it stand out away from the Fiesta ST in my opinion
@@PocketRockets OK will do thanks for your thoughts, great reviews keep up the good work
@@andrewmaple9863 Thanks for the kind words, lovely to chat 👍🏼
Like I always say if the type r had 5seats I would get it
Most cars that adopt a three seat configuration tend to be rubbish from my experience, usually thanks to the transmission tunnel eating legroom
Either FK8 or Puma ST is perfect for a small family, two adults in the front and two kids in the back easy 👍
Thanks for watching and commenting Tommo!
£6k more than a Fiesta ST for slightly more metal, if you compare the base models of each!
Currently in the UK, a fully specced ST3 5 door is £28,510 and the Puma is near £32,000 so around a £3,500 difference
From memory, the ST Line X i tested last year was a £5,000+ difference over a Fiesta ST Line
A crazy world we live in!
Thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Civic Type R is well on the 35k price now !
Nearer to £34k plus this just shows the Puma can't compete in this price bracket
1. Puma's boot is only 36 litres bigger (that's more because of the extra mega box)
2. Type R is more powerful
3. Type R is more comfortable, has adaptive suspension to suit most driving conditions
4. Type R handles better, even on 20" alloys
5. I'd argue there's more practicality especially in the rear
So, yes I'd still have a Type R over a Puma ST; but each to their own
Thanks for watching Andrew
How many km with 1l? Thank you
6.9 miles / 100km
Thanks for watching
I brought a puma st love it so much don't like the honda anyway
The Honda is still better 😜 👍🏼
@@PocketRockets yes your right but it's nice to be different
Type R is far more different from the crowd than a Puma 🤣
@@PocketRockets yes the Honda is a horrible looking car and can't be compared to the puma completely different size and engine type
@@andrewmaple9863 You've completely missed my point I'm not comparing them as like for like
The mean green driving machine . No suv can live with this car under £30k
In what sense, Steven? I'm intrigued to hear more of your thoughts
Thanks for watching, by the way 👍🏼
@@PocketRockets driving experience , it has a manual gear box and is as quick a Fiesta ST .
pointless will be stolen in a week
🤣🤣🤣
Such an ugly car , how did Ford agree on making it ffs.
We'll never know Phil, I don't understand the appeal either
