4. Research the juries
5. Enter more competitions - with the same entry/school project
Thanks
I was always afraid of joining competition cause i think i wasn't good enough. But thank to your videos, i am now ready and really having much more confidence. Thank you.
Starting is always the hardest part. Do lots of research and give it your best! đȘ
As always, amazing video! My university always opens the second semester with a competition, so we can't escape from them even if we want to lol, yesterday was the delivery deadline, so this is useful in many circumstances. I used many things that I learned from you, so thank you very much. I really enjoy competitions, even if they are a little stressful sometimes. (btw, you are right about only us, architects, wanting to live in concrete masses lmao)
Bro, you really are great. A real inspiration, thanks for everything you're sharing.
that's a really helpful video, thank you!
Thank you brother. We had Thom Mayne at my school Las year and the biggest thing je told me is to fui us on learning as much as possible, then apply to an office to get experience all while designing your own project at the side. Til you connect the dots
Great to see enthusiasm young architect, great share đ
Insightful as always!
Thanks always for your support đ
I just found the perfect channel. Thanks brother đ
Very Informative Video! Awesome!

Bro you are amazing thank you
Could you share something about what happened after you won a competition? Thank you!
I just loved to find your chanel so much
Thank you for your kind words! Let me know if you have a specific content you're looking for :)
Do you have any recommendations for books or other sources for understanding basic construction techniques because all that is taught in my school is basic RCC column beam structures. I am a second year student and I feel clueless about how to check the feasibility of my ideas. Also thanks for the informative content as always!
GSD Grad and Arch Prof. here. Here's a few books I've found helpful through the years:
The Structural Basis of Architecture
2nd Ed. by Arne P. Eggen and Bjorn N. Sandaker is a great resource.
Building Construction Illustrated by Francis Ching (any edition) is also a classic.
Lastly, you can never go wrong with Allen + Iano's The Architect's Studio Companion for quick reference beyond structure, into many other fundamentals a second year could use.
@@ryanleethomas Thanks a lot for your advice. Will definitely check on the recommendations. đ
Great Q Yogesh! I'm in the exact same boat!
Did u find any?
Very cool!
Great to see you here Lyric đ
Design competitions are essentially mind games. The deeper you go the more convincing your entry becomes. Thats where you elicit originality. I think a winning entry is far from being architectural, so to speak. If an architectural creation can be presented without visuals or form but can be explained clearly that it elicits vivid imaginations, then that would be sure win imho ;)
Great!
hacks which can help in winning competition are-
1. choosing the competition very carefully according to your priorities, interests etc.
2. Analyze the behavior of winners.
3. do some research on juries .
4. catch the pattern of design that wins.
5. do something more than the minimum requirement.
thank you for the tips .đâ€
Well, I do a lot of competitions in my office for Germany and once someone does an extended amount of work or give drawings that were not required, they will hide them from the jury view so that all of the competitors have equal chances to win. Also, visualizations are not allowed cuz they never show the REAL 'reality'. They are always overdone and its hard to judge the concept by looking at the beautiful visualization. I think, for competitions that mean to build sth afterwards (not an abstract ones) its really fair.
(I am not from Germany, so Im not biased over here haha ;) )
yes, we need more videos on this, 4th year in college and i only participated in 2 competitions!, only recently while watching a documentary on Bjarke, i learned the importance and possibilities with them, guess now i know what i will be doing for next 1 and half year.
dear, we would love to have some intellectual videos on workflow and design approach for competitions.
still looking for the root cause sir Bjarke mentioned in his documentary...
Thanks a lot
Amazing
When are the 2024 challenges going to be uploaded on your site?
Another challenge is coming next week!
i subscribed as soon as you started speaking. you have a kind heart and dont mind do give a helping hand.
The audience is like an objective dimension to consider if you are trained even be a literature writer!
â3 is a little tricky? If they are looking for just one style like concrete blocks I'll feel somehow limited and makes me question why they didn't put it in the description of the competition. Also I can't be sure if they won't like something new, so I'll feel very confused and that's why I'll try to not take it too seriously what the previous winners have in common. That's my personal opinion.
Where do you normally find competitions, could you give some references? Thanks :)
Hi Dian, we made a video on this topic previously! czcams.com/video/mw5XIxliYDs/video.html
You cam visit Archidaily and Bustler there are all competitions info.
Perhaps a future video talking about Architecture salary???? lol
What website do you use to enter competition or which ones do you recommend??
Check out bustler.net and arch-hive.com!
Motivated video thank you
Happy to hear that đ„ Let us know how it goes!
Really helpful video ....when did u start participating in competition?
I started entering them in the first year, but I would recommend others to enter a little later once you've built up the foundations!
im pretty sure u are the guy from architecture inspiration
why'd you leave OMA?
Do you usually work in a team for competitions or on your own?
I usually work in a team of 3!
do you have any tips about doing research and websites for research
? freshman here
Hey there, welcome to the world of architecture! Make sure to check out this video where we explain some techniques and websites to research competitions: czcams.com/video/3BSKDET1UTk/video.html
Question : Should I start joining competitions from year 1 or should I start after sometime in uni?
Hi Rishal, I would personally recommend after finishing the first year : )
You probably donât have enough ability to compete at first year (computer programs, mental catalogue, graphic ability etc.) just spend every minute you have learning how to show your work better and never stop filling your brain with information and by the end of your second year, you should have a fighting chance.
Where can I find competitions?
You should checkout: arch-hive.com/competitions
Hi!, did you participated on your own or you had a team?
A bit of both!
sanaol
Thanks for this helpful video. May I ask a question about the IP. After you won a competition, did you sign an agreement to transfer it to the client or the organizer?
That's a great question, and I have never personally had to do that. If I understand correctly, most briefs usually specify that authors maintain the IP and allow organizers to use it for promotional purposes, which isn't a transfer of rights.
@@ArchiHacks I see, thanks for answering.
@@vinng3458 could you explain what you by IP ?
could you please give us names of competitions websitesđđŒ
Hi Sarah! I know Iâm not the one you were asking but my professor just gave me the name of a competition website. BeeBreeders.com also I follow a page on instagram called competitions.archi :) hope this helps! and i hope you bag some wins!!
Dakota Ogata thaaaaaaaaaanks đ
Puh yeah. So Austrian architect here who also won a lot of competitions for bigger offices as head of competition. Canât agree on all of your tips. Some of them are trying to brute-force success, like delivering more than asked or use the same draft on multiple competitions. Instead ask yourself whatâs most important and boil it down to the core. Every drawing should be on point. No questions left. If you need double the sentences to get on point youâre bad at articulating.
There are FREE architecture competitions ?
Haha yes! You'll be surprised đ
so personally as a solo practitioner, won 20 competitions? or team work? ambiguous.
I heard from wealthy american art investor that all competitions are payied for behind doors.winnets known in advance...
èšèă ăăăăȘăăŠćăŁăæăźææăćșăă
This is random but he's cute as...
architecture competitions are disgrace to the profession. change the jury panel you will find totally different winner. why 99% people are working for free. imagine you ask list of lawyer to file case for you and you will decide who is going to get the case, no one will do it, but architect will. if you want to get projects make public relation so that they trust you "architecture competition are nothing, but torture" rem koolhas
Change client, you'll design a completely different project, no?
$25,000 Is not much for over 50 architectural concepts, you would earn 2 or 3 times that in a proper job. And you mention it is almost a quarter million dollars. No it's not, you need to add another zero for that.
But to be fair, it is good practice for your portfolio.
You're absolutely right! It was a good practice but the rewards were small especially compared to how much professionals paid. For the record though, quarter million refers to the construction budget - which is still a small sum for an architectural project but definitely a big responsibility for a 3rd year undergrad at the time ;)
