If DBS was designed to tell a narrative story it would have the same formula as DBZ with Vegeta and Goku being the ex daddy machina for Trunks and Goten with them as the stand-in's for the audience. Narratively speaking it with DB Goku DBZ Gohan with Goku being his co-star so DBS should be Goten and Trunks by extension but it's not.
