      Tao was the first villain that completely outmatched Goku in terms of power. There were times where Goku was defeated before (for example his first fight against Yamcha). Goku's defence is he was acting in self defence much of the time, the Red Ribbion army soldiers, they weren't killed at least when he attacked the base, outside of Commander Black, the rest were just KO and evenly fled the base! Besides, Goku is a good person, he has done a lot of good during his life, lets see now:
      Helps Chi-chi find Roshi and get his help putting out a fire
      Beat the Red Ribbion Army
      Help reform Tien
      he saved the earth (Piccolo senior & JR)
      Save earth from his evil big brother and then later on Vegeta with whatever his name was (I forgot)
      saved the galaxy (Freeza)
      saved the earth again (Cell)
      saved the universe (Buu)
      saved earth yet again (Breaus and a revived a while later Freeza)
      likely save alternative future earth (Black Goku)
      I think its safe to say Goku is on Santa good list for along time to come despite the lives he has taken. From what I can think of, only one feat Goku hasn't achived, YET and that is saving all of reality, if he does that, I think he would be classed as the strongest being in all 12 known Universes!

      Then he did that a couple of times until he fought Frieza. Goku tried to help Frieza because he thought maybe he can change just like Piccolo and Vegeta but after Frieza attacked Goku with a blast, Goku just fired another one at him, supposably killing him. Of course Frieza was still alive because he can breath in space. In Trunk's timeline, Goku actually killed Mecha Frieza and King Cold, even though King Cold tried to apologize and begged to be spared, Goku just killed him. It seems that Goku learned from his mistakes.

If I remember right the Red Ribbon Army was going to kill off their whole village anyway so leaving Upa alive was actually more cruel. I like how in Dragon Ball, not everything is just a zenkai boost. Goku actually just learns how to fight better here. Sure, he probably got a bit stronger from the climbing but it's more than just raw power.

    • @BradenBest
      @BradenBest Před 10 měsíci +16

      tbf zenkai boost isn't overused in Z. The only time it's REALLY used is once on vegeta to demonstrate it against zarbon (and then again in his attempt to fight frieza), and then on Goku to remove him from the plot until Frieza's about to kill Vegeta. When Z starts out, Goku is slightly weaker than Radditz, but him getting special beam canon'd to death doesn't zenkai boost him. Instead he has to train with king kai and get wished back to life, training which involves learning a new technique to temporarily power himself up, which he can power up to arbitrarily high levels but at the risk of injuring himself. He then uses this training and new technique to barely edge out a win against vegeta with a kaio ken x20 kamehameha, hospitalizing himself in the process until he gets a senzu bean. Then, he goes on a flight to namek for 6 days and trains his ass off the whole time under 100x gravity. Training which allows him to defeat enemies that Vegeta couldn't, powerscaling him above Vegeta. Goku then gets taken out of commission for a few episodes thanks to the body switching guy to heal in a pod and that's when he gets his zenkai boost. And even then, he has to use kaio ken x100 to keep Frieza on his toes. He doesn't beat Frieza until he gets the super saiyan boost. Later on, Goku learns off-screen how to teleport and later still Goku and Gohan get another huge powerup when they go in the hyperbolic time chamber, along with a stronger super saiyan form. Though it is Gohan who ultimately defeats cell cause that's how the show was supposed to end according to Toriyama himself, with Goku, the student, becoming the master and mentor and passing on his legacy. There wasn't supposed to be a buu saga. Why do you think they killed Goku off permanently near the end of the cell arc? That was the end of his story. From freakishly strong orphan child with questionable morals to sacrificing his own life so his son may live on.
      Zenkai boost is actually very seldom used in all these powerups. The actual problem IMO is that most of the training happens off-screen and the powerscaling gets so ridiculous that you can't keep track. In DB, you get to see most of the training and the powerups usually aren't unbelievable. For most of the series nobody can fly. Even Tao Pai Pai "flies" by chucking a pillar and riding it like a missile. It isn't until the final arc where Goku becomes tall after a 3 year time skip that he learns off-screen how to fly, but after seeing the starting of his training being learning to dodge lightning and how to move without telegraphing, it feels earned. Goku learning how to teleport on the other hand feels like a plot convenience since he's stranded in another solar system and they needed a way for him to come back.
      I feel like the point of the zenkai boost was to show that vegeta's overreliance on these things was hurting him rather than helping. Vegeta is shown learning how to sense power levels himself without needing a scouter, and then he falls back into old habits overrelying on zenkai boosts to get stronger which ultimately gets him killed. Instead, Goku is the one who attains super saiyan, and it's not because he had someone blast him to near death. It's because he trained his ass off and then had an intense surge of emotion. Goku earned his way to super saiyan. Vegeta tried to cheat his way there and failed. That, to me, feels like the real point of zenkai boosts. It's the explanation for why Vegeta is so much stronger than Goku without training, and also why Goku will inevitably overtake him.

    This was a big part of the early dragonball story. Tao is often considered Dragonball's first super villain. Jackie Chun (Roshi) was Goku's first powerful opponent, Krillin was his first rival, Yamcha was his first true martial arts fight, and Pilaf was his first enemy. However, Tao was the first truly evil opponent who succeeded in killing one of Goku's friends and whose power was so great that Goku needed to break his limits in order to defeat him. Goku broke his limits (sort of) only once before this during his basic strength training with Roshi. This was the first time Goku had to break his limit specifically to defeat one foe or die trying.
