  • AFC Bournemouth are closing in on the signing of Wellington Phoenix's Alex Paulsen, a goalkeeper that was also being tracked by Chelsea and Liverpool. The deal is said to be worth around £850K, and add-ons that could take it closer to £2 million.
Sam Davis chats to Cherries and Phoenix fan Sean Barker - founder of the Back of the Net podcast, to get the inside scoop on Iraola's newest signing in the making.

Paulsen is the real deal. Incredibly skilled and talented. His penalty save percentage is 60%... crazy

Honestly, Bournemouth fans, this guy is insane. Saved 82% of the shots at goal, exceeded his expected saves by over 12 xg goals (expected to go in) and saved back to back penalties. I had the pleasure of seeing him live and it's not often you come away from a match seriously impressed with a goalkeeper but it happened every single match I saw Paulsen. I've got a video on my channel diving (pun intended) into the statistics of his first season in goal for the nix, compared to the previous number 1 - the stats speak for themselves and were a massive contributor to the Nix's successful season! 👏

Paulsen is absolutely unbelievable. I think Iraola will blood him in preseason with an open mind - wouldn’t be surprised if he wins the starting spot through that

As a fellow die hard Dorset born Cherries fan, now based just above Welly in NZ, I've been down to see the Phoenix play a couple of times this past season and one of the big talking points me and my friends discussed coming away from the last game was how impressed we all were with Paulsen - he is the real deal for sure and I hope he does indeed get his chance with us. He is confident, commands well and I'd feel far more confident with him between the sticks than Neto agogo oh no or Travers. UTCIAD! and Back of the Net!

I'm in Hawkes Bay and he'll be a big loss to the Phoenix. A real prospect. I'm not even a Cherries fan (Evertonian) but have followed this channel regularly. Hope he goes really well with you if he breaks through.

As a die hard Nix fan, Alex Paulson going from a benchwarmer keeper to replacing Oliver Sail and getting a premier league transfer in just 12 months is crazy and Paulson is the future of NZ football

Certainly knows how to save a penalty, he kept the top ranked high school side in Auckland to only 1/5 in a semi-final shootout a few years back!

As an Adelaide United supporter and Bournemouth supporter since 1956, I would have loved to have him in goal for Adelaide. Having watched him all season , he is clearly destined for bigger things with AFCB.

Saints, Phoenix and NZ fan here but absolutely think he could start this coming or next season and the stats prove it. He prevented 13 goals v xG this season, 5 penalty saves, top 5% percentile GK under the high ball and crosses and as we know, unbelieveable on the ball. If he is leaving, I hope it's Hibs for 38 games in the premiership. Especially because I feel like Neto is on the way out.

As a Liverpool fan I think he is going to be an absolute star for Bournemouth he has been brilliant for the Phoenix he's young he's very fit and agile and I can't wait to see how he gets on next season at you're club what a great signing

As a Nix fan. You guys are getting a gem of a keeper. Obviously won't come in right away but he's been much better than Mat Ryan (former Brighton keeper who came out of the A-League). Please manage him well

Great insight from the legend that is Sean Barker. Good to hear those dulcet tones albeit with that kiwi twang getting stronger all the time! Go well buddy, catch up next time.

Great keeper. For those that didn't know: Born in South Africa, moved to NZ age 4, grew up with his twin brother playing indoor football (which is exactly why he's so comfortable passing and playing out with his feet). Hope to see him starting at the Olympics in late July.

Big Phoenix fan. Paulson is a fantastic shot stopper. He’s a big reason why the pheonix ended up with in the position they’re in. Saved many crucial shots. MVP for sure for the season. Sad to lose him but it’s a great opportunity for him to play and develop at a higher level. Bournemouth just needs to play him.

Why are they always messing around with goalies?
We havee Travers who is currently the best but they don't hardly play him. Neto is suitable as a back up and there are two other goalies in the first team.

    • @smiis3149

he's absolutely unbelievable, and considering the flux at GK I think there's a chance he could grab that no. 1 jersey in preseason (post-Olympics) and never look back. This was his first senior season so it's difficult to judge his ability in comparison to much more experienced competition, but he's never had a bad game and always looked vastly superior to his peers so there's always the chance that he's naturally far too talented to be in the A-League but just hasn't had the opportunity to leave yet. this would mean he's already talented enough to slot in at a high level, but I still think he needs that period of acclimiatisation at Hibs/a Championship club to graduate fully

I can guarantee he will be Bournemouths number 1 next season. I can also guarantee he will be sold for £55million in 3 years time. Come back to this comment when all becomes a reality
