With a good writer behind her Kathy Bates could easily carry a show; so I agree I feel there was no requirement to call this Matlock
@@danieltilley888 sadly, Kathy Bates headlined a show called Harry’s Law a few years back; had decent writing but cancelled after 2 seasons; maybe it’s because Mark Valley joined the 2nd season, lol
@18MWM81 as I understand it that show was not received well in terms of critical response indicating the writing may not have been that great. Though I have never seen it myself so I cannot comment on the quality. Obviously there are a lot of factors that affect a shows reception not just the writing, my point is that a show starring Kathy Bates with good writing and production could succeed without the name Matlock attached to it.
@@danieltilley888 it was actually the most watched show on NBC at the time it was cancelled. They axed it though because it was owned by Warner Bros and not NBC. Kathy was, obviously, not happy with NBC and at least partially explains this being on CBS. Lol

IS IT inspired by the classic series of the same name? Other than older lawyer that people underestimate, this ain't MATLOCK. Unless maybe, MAYBE the law firm is in a big city in the south. Otherwise, get the name MATLOCK out of your mouth CBS 😄 That being said, this gives me GOOD WIFE vibes, premise wise, plus Kathy Bates, so I'll probably watch.

It's odd that they are using the name Matlock since that was a huge show that ran for nine seasons. It would be like having a new family drama called The Cosby Show, a new western called Gunsmoke or a new comedy called Seinfeld.
I love Kathy Bates & enjoyed the original show. Unlike most of the remakes being made today (Magnum & the Equalizer come to mind) this is different as she merely has the same name & is aware of the old show. Simply by doing this, the show can distance itself from direct comparisons with the original which to me is a good thing. I was a young man who enjoyed the original series, but now that I am older I am not sure about this one as it seems to be a lot of younger stars looking down on experienced people. Willing to give it a shot though.

technically, I don't think it's a reboot and I don't think they gender-bend Matlock. Kathy Bates' character literally acknowledged in the trailer that the original show exists and she basically shared the same last name as Andy Griffith's Matlock.

I already know that Kathy Bates' upcoming Matlock show is going to be dreadful.
Matlock (1986-1995) starring Andy Griffith is by far,
one of my most favorite television shows.
Imagine if the original Matlock had made that "getting laid" comment in the exact same way to a female character on the original series. Even back then they would have cancelled the show into oblivion.
i wonder if in one of the episodes she will have 2 huge dogs with her and she will keep telling ppl not to ride them.

Good luck it running 9 seasons like the other Matlock did. Kathy is now 75 and would be 83 by season 9. Very doubtful of the show's longevity.
Did they really do this to a classic show??? It seems like the new trend is mid life crisis changing careers following the new-old person. Rookie, Rookie Feds and now this show. I love Kathy Bates, but her last lawyer show crashed and burned and I would be surprised if this one lasts longer than a single season.
Kathy's last lawyer show Harry's Law actually had great viewership numbers ( in fact it was NBCs most watched show in terms of total viewership ) but it squewed older audience wise so the network didn't see value in that
Harry's law was also a WB show so NBC didn't see any value with keeping a show they didn't fully own after 2 seasons, I think this was probably what worked against it the most for NBC
It would have actually survived on streaming with those numbers by todays standards
So saying it crashed and burned isn't quite accurate

@@shippendales8543 If you liked it great, but it was bad in the only demographics that matter to networks and downward spiraled in the second season. And to be honest, most people don't know anything about that show without googling it. I mean if want to give a book report on it, that's up to you- but at the end of the day it wasn't a successful show. Now she's going back to what amounts to a nearly dried up well. Best of Luck.
It probably is a new trend on TV, but people changing careers later in life isn't truly new (and honestly, probably happened with more frequency around the pandemic). I personally don't look at shows and say, "older-person-is-a-newbie-in-new-career - no thanks." I'm usually more attracted to the character/actor. I enjoy Kathy Bates, but I wasn't really interested in Harry's Law - but I'm interested in this show.

Reminds me of a professional version of my mother - if she would have followed her rabid secularist mother - who was raised by her two schoolteacher aunts, single until their dying day. You don't wanna know. Trust me.
They cancel Walker Independence but give the green light for a reboot of Matlock

I'll give it a shot, but I don't love that she's joining a "prestigious law firm," which implies internal political battles and I am so. darn. tired. of. that. If I wanted to watch Suits or whatever, I'd watch it. I'd hoped she was running her own law firm. Hope the writing is worthy of Kathy Bates and isn't all "oh dear these young whippersnappers think they know things and obviously don't."

I don’t like that they referenced the old show as the TV show. I actually wanted her to be a relative. I won’t watch it now.
The only reason CBS is calling it Matlock is to get it noticed. Another weak reboot that has no resemblance to the much better original.
This looks terrible and has nothing to do with Matlock. The fact she references the old TV series is horribly lame. The thing that was unique about the show was it was about a lawyer that didn't just defend his clients but solved the crimes at the same time. There could have been a fresh remake Maybe about an ex investigator turned lawyer who delves deeper into all of his client cases almost like a super smart Monk type attorney but this certainly is not it. I don't want to watch some old lady pretend to be older to get larger settlements for a big law firm.
Was there for the filiming of this, some scenes are so cringy. This show sucks
