Cersei's First POV, OMG - AFFC Cersei I read-through - A Song of Ice and Fire - Game of Thrones

- Our first glimpse inside the perspective of Cersei Lannister is one of the biggest shocks to the reader in the whole series. From the outside, she’s a composed, ruthless ice queen - but inside, it’s a brewing cauldron of paranoia, rage, inferiority and supremacy, a mountain of grudges, and above all, fear. Even some House of the Dragon parallels!

Cersei is delightfully deranged in the books, and George does an expert job portraying narcissim running amok.
The Moth symbolism is interesting as I think they're a sort of Icarus figure, being drawn to the flame as if they are flying too close to the sun, grasping for the fire of the gods, making the Moth an Azor Ahai Symbol in my eyes
And we see the Moth symbol used again around the Weirwoods when describing their seemingly timeless abilities, which is a version of the fire of the gods, with the line "A weirwood will live forever if left undisturbed. To them seasons pass in the flutter of a moth's wing, and past, present, and future are one.”
Its an interesting line of symbolism to follow
Praise garth my friend
💀💨
this makes a lot of sense, great stuff Eldric - and Cersei is of course being drawn to the lure of power and the throne like a moth to the flame, and like Icarus. She's even trying to take the place of father sun, like Phaethon
thanks for watching and for the insight brother Eldric
@@DavidLightbringer Anytime mate, cheers 💀🍻
@@DavidLightbringerIn a lot of Celtic folklore the appearance of a moth is a sign that death is imminent in your home/family NOT the sign from the recently deceased 😁
I find Cersei’s chapters so fun to read cause she throws shade at every person that talks to her
She exudes constant alpha bitch in a teen movie energy
She throws shade at even people that arent there
😂 it’s great
I almost never comment on youtube but I feel compelled to say thanks for the amazing content and all the hard work you pour into it. I love long-form asoiaf content and no one does it quite like you!
Cersei stopping to give the random guard a Lannister lore drop
Cersei was counting her fingers to make sure she wasn't AI-generated.
Cersei 1 was truly my first look into a madmans head 💀
I love that in the scenes where Tyrion and Cersei find Shae they're both equally shaken by this revelation. The image Tywin wanted to project using fear even made his children believe it under an aura of fear as well. So seeing the truth laid out in front of them like this was traumatizing.
I can't wait to get deeper into Cersei. this stream was a great start and may we have many more!
Same here.
I also can't wait to "get deeper" into Cersei!
@@KingEdwardMMVIII jaime must have enjoyed himself greatly
the way you worded it 💀
@@caspertheghost321 but really i can't wait til we're like 3/4ths of the way thru her story in AFFC. I was going to reread but quickly realised i need to just start with ASOS and re-read from there 🌚
Ol' Uncle Kevin is a younger brother. When he finds out about lancel and Cerci I could see him strangling her. He's pretty tired of her crap already. Also, Great content I enjoyed listening!
Glad I could catch the last part of the stream. I find Cersei's chapters so interesting. There is so much deep dive into psychology there, which I find so fun to read.
Gods, I love her chapters…
Another great video! Huge news … George’s post last Monday appears in four ways to be a coded announcement that...
'Winds of Winter' is coming out this Summer!
Clear your calendars in late June/July. Break up with your annoying partners not into fantasy. :)
A similar post w a blue slain King Kong was how George announced Dance was done on 27 April 2011. The book was out on 12 July 2011, less than three months later. This time it’s a big, full, blooming blue rose (with no explanation), plus…
1. The post is labeled “Words of Wisdom” (that is code for: Winds of Winter).
2. Features a quote from William Faulkner about the lonely task of turning a DREAM into a book (code for: working now on A Dream of Spring) plus George labels his current status "contemplative."
3. It’s four months to the day since meeting with his UK publisher in England. Why is this significant? The King Kong post first cryptically announcing Dance was posted exactly four months to the day after he met with his UK publisher in England.
This is real: Winds is Coming out this year and his publishers will want it out this Summer for people to buy and read over the Summer and to tie into Hot Dragon Season 2 increased interest.
I do appreciate the report thank you. I really hope so
I so hope you are right 🤞🏻
It's all them good vibes we've been putting out there.
Don't give me hope....😭
Okay, you got me all worked up now, so I went and checked GRRM old blog posts. The King Kong Post was posted in April 2011; one month later, in May 2011, he announced he had finished ADWD, which he referred to as Kong during his writing process. Two months later, on July 12th, ADWD was released.
Taking all this into account, he will probably announce that he finished Winds next month in April, and the release date will be two months later in June. Now, I might be reaching here a bit, but he has posted this blog post at 6.07 PM. Hence, the release date might be June 7th, 2024. GRRM likes the meaning of numbers and Winds of Winter is the 6th book in a 7th book saga, so June 7th would mean something. lol
39:53 That makes me wonder, what do the common folk of Westeros, maybe even the nobility, think the accounts of dragons from the Targaryen kings Aegon I on through to Aegon II? What do they credit with as being the “real” equivalent to dragons if not the dragons themselves? I understand that 145 years have passed since the last dragon died, and even then they weren’t often seen, but I wonder if they really do think ALL the tales were embellished to that degree. Does Ned? Did Robert? What about Stannis, he was a real pragmatist? Interesting.
0:59:15 First you practice your weirwood tree root walking skills… next minute you’re rooting in the weirwood tree
Cersei feast for crows is Asoif funnest time ,she's absolutely out of control and Jaime's just watching with a smile on his face .
Jaime definitely did the Homer gif and disappeared into the Walls , like Nope i dont wanna talk to anyone about this 😂

Great stream, you were truly in an excellent form today!

The mythical story of Cersei from the Odyssey made me think of several similar parallels, along with your example from Narnia:
In the movie Spirited Away, the main character's parents go uninvited to a table of food. Once they start eating, they can't stop, and they turn into pigs.
There is also the Pleasure Island in Pinocchio, where the children are free to eat, drink, smoke, and do as they like - but they turn into donkeys.
Temptation and Transformation. Succumbing to desires leads to becoming an animal.
There is also the myth of Persephone and Hades. She is trapped in the underworld, and eats 6 out of 12 pomegranate seeds, and so she has to stay 6 out of 12 months of the year in the underworld. Not an example of succumbing to desires, but an example of food being a device for entrapping someone.
Great stuff David! Love these read-throughs.
Great stream as im rewatching it now as so much different to the show
50:00 I think the moth is meant to be her. She’s rushing towards her own demise (not necessarily her death) and everything she’s doing is very much her saying “just die already” to herself without her realizing it? The moth wants the light and flame and doesn’t know it will die if it succeeds in “catching” it?
Can't wait for next weeks stream
Totally
"cersei is masking" 🔥💯
Great stream!
wonderful stream!

Another chapter read through. Always a fun time
Love the Cersei chapter re reads. Thank you for bringing them to life. Nice one David :)
The Lannister guard called Red Lester made me laugh: Red Leicester is a popular type of cheese in the UK.
What next, I wonder? A pair of twins from House Gloster (Double Gloucester) or a guy called Wensley from House Dale (Wensleydale)? 🤣
I'm imagining Wensley of Dale being a bald man with big ears, an overbite, and a dog called Gromit 😂
@@RoseliptillgirlLMAO. Then we could have a guy from House Stilton who gets wighted and turns blue...😉
I’m losing my shit at this stream LOL. I LOVE CERSEI’S INNER LANDSCAPE OF CRAYCRAY, but that when she thinks of Tyrion just how spot on and in character he is. your glee at that part had me ROLLING.
“that’s how I like to question her too!” 😆😆😆
Craster’s got worst dad in Westeros on lock down
He does spend a lot of quality time with all his daughters though...
@@erikaho6167 as well as his daughters' daughters. And their daughters too.
THANK YOU, oh my god. I still say “they’re all gonna laugh at you!” but I haven’t been able to remember where it’s from FOR SO LONG. Okay back to actual video topics but that’s been driving me nuts for years lol
Lots of kingsguards getting red faces (slapped/out of breath) and the pale corpse queen wants blood.
Cersei's chapters are so good. I support women's rights and wrongs!!! 😅
But for real, her arc in AFFC is so compelling: the descent into the depths of her internalized misogyny, Lannister superiority complex and paranoia leading her to become a female version of her abuser late husband... ART.
Great stream, as always Mr. Lightbringer!
You realize that everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, except for Italians. We are always Italians. Ha, ha, ha ha, just getting this after your villains stream.
I think Dawn could be about expressing the idea of the cold dawn after the solar king has died. Elden Ring uses the terms frigid and lackluster to describe their sun and all the sunflowers in game face the Erdtree because thats where the sun's light is actually contained in the game. I really like your idea that Dawn was the sword of the Nights King and to the cold dawn after the death of the solar king makes a lot of thematic sense to me. We also have the language from Bran 1 AGOT which sees a cold morning dawn for the execution (symbolizing winter is coming) Dawn is the orginal Ice and the Karstarks sigil is the winter sun which is a white sun (so again lackluster or colorless lacking warmth and life)
We get a lot of this color draining/grey/white language during Theon's ghost of winterfell chapters.
You really should make a Valonqar theory iceberg video.
David, yesterday I watched your Sothoryos video during a portion of the time infusing a pound of butter then ran a playlist oif yours during the baking of the oatmeal cinnamon cookies. Today I tested the stupidly potent cookies when watching this stream. I couldn't have done it without you. 😊
To me a lot of Cersei's arc in Feast is about becoming a Nights Queen figure as the solar king figure dies.
The lantern is a symbol for the guiding light of the crone and as you said the moths connect to death, but also time and transformation as a catapillar becomes a moth. Tywin's death is like the moth burning which is like the sun dying and setting everything on fire (Cersei burning the tower is the same symbolic idea of burning down the previous order)
This is all thematic for Cersei's arc and quest to become the new Tywin (moth) by seeking power but this leads to her "burning" and becoming Nights Queen which is represented by the imprisonment and walk of shame.
The death head moth is the same one as in Silence of the Lambs which sees someone trying to make a skin suit so they could become someone else (in this case a woman) This idea is a bit flipped with Cersei since she wants to become a man/king (thematically)
This is all interesting when we consider all the castration/eunuch ideas associated with the Others and the concept of cutting down (burning) the trees (axis) which is a phallic symbol. Kinda just spitballing but this was a really interesting chapter I never gave to much thought.
Great stream as always, thanks.
Had to work yesterday - enjoying the rewatch 👍 thx for this great entertainment
Ahh, why are you always live so late. Jokes, I know it's because I'm in Europe. Still, I hope I will be able to join sometime. Great video!
catching up after a tense week with visiting family. thank you for another amazing stream, David ❤
Another great live! Thank you for all the work you put on the lives and videos! I’m all here for it. Sending thanks from 🇧🇷
Morgan Daimler, Lora Obrien, & the Irish Pagan School are all amazing resources as far as Irish mythology goes!
Im posting halfway through, but I look forward to the rest of the analysis! Great stuff as always, LmL. And personally, I saw the moth as being emblematic of the death of house lannister with Tywin. I have a hard time seeing House Lannister surviving the story
Dang i had a migraine and missed the stream last night. I am listening at work and driving, but i do have thoughts....
Great video 👍🏻
Another great video. Look forward to these chapter reads. One thought on the hands of gold necklace. In addition to the symbolism it could also be foreshadowing that the Valenquar Jamie will strangler her with his hand of Gold.
There's also the Brotherhood Without Banners members, or tons of younger brothers in different houses. Although Jaime is one of many who deserves to murder her.
Re: Jamie poisoning Cersei. In Fire and Blood a lord kills one of the traitor dragonseeds by poisoning him with wine (arbor gold). The dragonseed is paranoid so the lord has to drink the poisoned wine too to not appear suspect and ends up dying before he can purge the poison. The same thing could happen with Jamie. He serves Cersei wine but has to drink some too and ends up taking them both out (Cersei does love her wine). It would fit with the idea that the twins came into the world together and will also die together. Jamie presents poison to Olenna Tyrell in the show ( who voluntarily drinks it mixed with wine), in the books it could be Cersei ( very much involuntarily).
And if it was the strangler that would fulfill the valonqar prophecy wording about the life being choked from her
Cant wait for some Arianne chapters
theory: what if the wildfire in kings landing is the only way to cleanse the immanent threat of greyscale???
Would Cersei buy a Stanley Cup?
She would, but she'd throw it away the minute Margaery bought one 😂
@@cpolt1192 And then ban them in the Red Keep. Or she'd ask for one double the size of Margaery's, crimson with a golden lion and her servants would have to carry it around because it's too heavy for her.
1:30:55 I always thought that too. In the Lannister camp in the Riverlands after Tyrion has the discussion with Tywin, who sends him to KL as Hand, and says he cant bring the whore. Tywin was testing him, Tyrion out of spite takes her anyway. Shae is in Tywins pocket the whole time. I think Tyrion suspects it all along but I think hes convinced she will actually fall in love with him, but she gives us a big hint when she thinks the rich man lives in the riddle.
Good good sh*t
Was tywins intent all along to sway jaime and have him inherit? 🤔 Obvi wasnt going to be tyrion, or cersei …. He had to have known he wouldnt live forever. This had to have crossed Cersei’s mind as well. What a risk, tywin!
Shoutout for your fantastic work, as always.
Are you planning a special stream for next month’s solar eclipse? 🌑🌞
Could morning light in the tower of the hand potentially symbolise something important within the war for the dawn at the fist of the first men perhaps? I haven't thought too deeply into this yet but it's food for thought...
Also with tywin being the solar king being killed tyrion could also play the part of the lion of night
Another banger
Dead solar king is actually undead sqisher king (ra-dagon), we have one of those in elden ring. That's why Dawn is needed.
☯︎
great pic
you mentioned Cersei/Aerys parallels, and I've noticed parallels between her and other notorious Targ kings- mainly Maegor and Aegon 4.
edit: and of course Rhaenyra (from Fire & Blood, if not the show)
Absolutely loving this stream
By the way, how can gifted memberships be claimed? Do we submit interest in advance or is it something you click on in the chat during the livestream and it activates immediately?
Thanks to the legends who gift them!
😑 i wish i didn't work on sundays....but, on the flip this is what's going to put me to sleep tonight
“There will be no more talk of forcing me to marry again.” Oh Cersei 🫂
Maybe the moth represents Cersie, and the flame in the lantern represents the Iron Throne or power. It would be a perfect foreshadowing of her arc in the rest of the book. As Cersie's reckless persuit of power ultimately leads her to destroy herself. Just as moths destroy themselves in pursuit of the light from a fire. Cersie even ends up trapped in the Sept of Baelor just like the moth gets trapped in the lantern. 🤔
yes on further review I believe this is the main thing
Arya , Cat of the Canals , Literally Uses the Eyes of the Cat in the Rafters to see has more Squirrels ties , yes
This is but a humble sacrifice on the altar of the algorithm gods.
Cersei’s dream sounds prothetic. She’s foreseeing what’s about to come. Being naked and people who looked up to her laughing and the foot twisting. She does cut her her foot during the walk of shame
You should be paid to do the audiobooks it would be epic
People not believing in dragons due to length of extinction makes sense.
It would be like suddenly seeing tasmanian tigers or passenger pigeons nowadays.
The people of Westeros literally saw to death of the "last" dragon.
Moths are typically seen as messengers from the recently deceased and can be an omen of change. Cersei might subconsciously see the moth as Tywin hence the constant self reassuring that she's like Tywin. She knows she's not remotely like him in his abilities and just wants him to and his memory to die completely.
Cercei... Thanks 🎉
Yay!!
Cersei B = Cardi B
It's a weird theory but hear me out
I'm listening
When it comes to Cersei, her chapters are so fun to me. 💖💖💖💖
Cersei feels she needs to change aspects of herself to have power. The throne cutting into her breasts and stomach could symbolize this. Her masking is so poorly done once she opens her mouth. Everyone around her knows she is mean and spiteful, yet she believes they respect her. She definitely has her moments of intelligence and political savvy, but she sabotages herself by being so cruel. Loving the Cersei content, one of my favorite characters to analyze!
More Jaime and Cersei videos coming 🤤
35:47
Moth is symbolism of her struggling to rule. Bumbling, clumsy, stupid. Like Icarus she has flown too high. Hapless she will die at the hands of Jamie after she admits to burning kings landing.
I didn’t know Cheney picked himself. 😅
he sure did!!
can we get a jeor mormont character breakdown?
Cersei would be right about Jamie going alone, not knowing who the perpetrators might be... but Jaime knows.
Cersei *always* overlooked Shae
31:35
Craster is the worst dad in the Planetos 😂😂
I like to imagine grrm looking at the characters in agot and thinking “some of these dads are pretty awful, but what if I made the objectively worst dad?”
Maybe Cersei didn't die *of strangulation* but *with strangulation*
To Cersei, Jaime is everything she loves about herself and sees him as a copy of herself, but also he’s a reminder of everything she hates about herself. Cersei constantly mentions how she is the only true son Tywin ever had and that had she been born a man instead of woman she would be heir since she was born before Jaime. This is obviously very hard for her to accept and it leads to her having a growing resentment for her twin since he gets everything she thinks she deserves. This causes Cersei to build a growing resentment for women in general and creates like a self-hatred for herself while also twisting that into her narcissistic personality that sees herself as better than everyone else. Extremelyy interesting all the way around.
I think her deep rooted misogyny has other origins as well, for example:
1)Her father treats women as ladies, servants or "whores," although people like Tysha aka servants or lower class are treated as "whores." Therefore Tywin's Madonna-Whore complex has caused serious emotional issues for Cersei.
2) Without any female friends or a mother figure from a young age, Cersei has not learned to empathize with women or relate to them.
3)Social isolation and stress lead Jaime and Cersei to develop a sexual relationship which is disturbingly common in dysfunctional families. Because Cersei had no true romantic feelings (except lust) for Jaime she began to use her sexuality as a tool further causing self loathing and disgust towards men in general.
In short, Cersei likely had serious mental health issues that were exacerbated by a lot of piss poor parenting on (mostly) her father's behalf
It’s interesting how we start off her pov with how she wishes to be sitting above the people and Dany while she’s in Mereen sits on a woodenbench so she can be closer to her people which goes to show how they both view ruling in a different way
