I was at this show and I still can't believe I got to see Patton with Dillinger. I didn't get into the band until 2010 and I was far too young to experience the early days.
And now, as of Sunday, I got to see them play a whole show with Dimitri, too... collected performances from all three vocalists like fuckin Infinity Stones.

A fly can live for a thousand years
But a man cannot die soon enough, true enough

DEP had toured with Mr. Bungle right before Dimitri left. The band reached out to him and asked him to do the EP, and IIRC, he did it because he was already a fan, and because he was worried the band would break up if they couldn't find a vocalist fast enough, so he wanted to help keep the band active while they looked for someone new.

The problem with this comparison is where DEP was in the era in which Chris was playing and the era in which Billy was. DEP became a fairly different band by that point, and in some ways I think that stifled Billy's range a bit honestly. I bet Billy would have done some neat stuff on Miss Machine or Calculating Infinity.

Agreed, unfortunately - I was so excited to see the recordings from these shows when they eventually came out, but these performances just feel so rigid. From 5:30-5:50, that section of When Good Dogs Do Bad Things is usually so sick and no doubt my favourite 20 seconds of this EP, but it's so lacking in the groove that makes it feel so menacing. This is absolutely not to say I could have done it better, but it would have been cool for the guys to have brought Pennie back for these songs.

Billy is an outstanding drummer that served them very well. that said, these songs have Pennies name all over them in his distinct jazz style. He was the right man for that job. Billy was flawless on the music he wrote with them and the Gil Sharone era stuff. Chris just had the knack for that era because he wrote it and understood what he and the band were looking for in that setting. No shame to Billy, he really is damn good.
