Our porch needed a bench. I rectified the problem. Admittedly, the design probably works better as a coffee table. That said, it is made out of cherry wood and features lots of weird angles. Please watch, enjoy, subscribe and share. Thanks!

This is the most relaxing video I've ever watched. Very well done!
Relaxing you say, of the 53,708 views 186 of them are mine. It's my new favorite video to fall asleep to.
+Mr Woodworker No.1 you are genius I'm totally listening to this in the hot tub later while I drink a nice woody scotch
I was thinking the same thing the whole time.

His voice actually reminds me of this morning wake up yoga video i used to watch haha extremely relaxing - well put
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection czcams.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
Not only did you create an incredible piece of furniture, it's a great video. There is no banjo music in our face as there is in far too many DIY instructional videos. THANK YOU!
haha...I actually do have a banjo. I just don't really know how to play it.
Maybe I'll keep it that way :-)
This video itself is a piece of art. Not only is the bench a thing of beauty, but the time and effort that translates through your quality of film, edits, music, etc.... WOW. One of the few videos on CZcams that I have truly enjoyed recently.
Cool video mate! "SUPER" relaxing video!!! I have 1 similar!!!
I have a great respect for your slow, careful, craftsmanship.
+TheJaredtheJaredlong
Thanks Jared...sorry it took me a month to respond. Apparently I was slowly, and carefully, crafting this message :)
Here are some great woodworking plans that you can try out: HootWood. com
Much obliged to the creator of this plan for sharing such awesome work of yours in an extremely moderate expense [Link Here== *TopFineWoodworking. Com* ]. The nature of the work and the materials far surpasses the cost. This is the best offer as such.?
I have let some of my woodwork colleagues know about this site [Link Here== *TopFineWoodworking. Com* ]. I was especially awed in the wake of experiencing the outlines and plans that were incorporated into the bundle. This is the best item for any woodwork devotee and shed manufacturer out there.?
While I liked the bench, I actually enjoyed the calmness and artistic quality of your video. I felt like I was getting a massage in a spa with the music and gentleness of your voice. great job!
Haha...Thanks Darth. Lots of people have told me it is very Zen.
Not only did I like your bench, but the video was very well done, very easy to watch. You have a great non threatening voice.
Thanks Gary! I found this out the hard way when I tried to rob a bank. Just kidding :)
I appreciate the compliment!
This is awesome. I love how detailed you got into for each step and how honest your comments were.
Finally, someone who not only does design-driven woodworking but knows how to work a camera too! These are awesome man. As much as I love the sound of a saw cutting through wood IRL, the calm, soothing soundscapes of your videos fits the bill perfectly. Great work.
Thanks Nick :)
FWIW I really enjoy your choices with sound levels. The machine noise compared to the music is just right, just loud enough to hear the sound of the saw cutting the wood, but not overpowering. There is something about the sound of saw cutting wood that makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
Thanks Reggie. Glad you picked up on that. Totally agree, can be a soothing sound in the distance...but if too loud can be irritating.
Right before you said it had a Japanesish flair, I was thinking it was a cross of Japanese and Danish Mid Century Modern design, with American Cherry. Multicultural bench. Love the build and look forward to more.
+DRitz78
Great minds think alike! Appreciate the compliments and the sub...more coming very soon!
Great video production. Entertaining all the way through. Love the design as well...good work.
Beautiful video and bench. Stellar. Nice job!
Put some plastic or metal feet on it, so that if the porch gets at all wet, it won't be soaked up into the bottom of the wooden legs. Looks great, and loved the detailed information. I know everyone gives people crap when they have a whole shop full of expensive tools, but as I watch it, I can see says of doing make of the things with inexpensive versions of said tools anyways. Those who can't lack imagination. :)
+necrojoe
Thanks! Yes...it's definitely possible to make the bench with fewer and cheaper tools. I think that one of the points that goes missing on the people who get mad that I have lots of tools, is the fact that I actually use these tools to make money when I build commissioned pieces. That's almost exclusively what I used them for the past 4 years. Only now am I beginning to build more things for myself. About the feet. I have some spacers so it isn't actually touching the ground now. Also, the only time that porch gets wet is if I hose it off...so I'll just move it out of the way when that happens.
My favorite part was at the very end, when I realized that it was a demanding client, the Cat, who commissioned this piece. Pleasing such a client, is of the highest, most morally important, social responsibilities of an enlightened society, and one of it's "cool dudes"; right on up there with brewing great beer. You did well. You Cat has refined modern tastes. I look forward to more.
That cat is never pleased :)
I really like the style you put this together, nothing is moving my attention away from the workpeace and nearly as important, nothing is moving my attention away from your thoughts and the process you took... thanks, one sub earned... I'll tell others too!
Thanks for the comment Kjellski! Really appreciate the support!
ur right bro..."nothing is moving my attention away from the workpeace"
Very well done, video and project!
+Matt Lane
Thanks Matt! I appreciate it...and thanks for the subscribe!
I like the style of the video. No crazy sped up scenes or annoying music. It really gave me a mellow feeling watching it. This bench has a George Nakashima look to it. Only thing I noticed off about the project is that you are too tall for it. Keep the videos coming. I'm a subscriber!
+Jesse Fast
Thanks. Yeah, it's an unfortunate combination of me loving furniture that is about an inch lower than average, and being a few inches taller than average.
Chris, not everything's about time. It's more about approach, and the joy that certain of these can bring. Don't be too overwhelmed by the number of tools. After all, you can boil them down to their basic functions, i;e 1)planing with, or 2)against, the grain. I'd sincerely recommend the following : 1) low-angle block plane (Veritas), 2) no.4 1/2 bench plane ( Lie Nielson and NOTHING ELSE!), 3) low-angle bevel up mitre plane (Veritas), a medium shoulder plane (Veritas again), and maybe to finish, for your pleasure, a no. 6 or 7 shooting plane (optional)of either make. Follow up with 200, 1000, 5000 grit Japanese water stones (read up on their use beforehand). The blades supplied by both makes are finely honed to start with. That's it. Bravo, well done on 2nd job. Nice work. Keep going
+musamor75
Thanks...I'm sure I'll get some, and get into it at some point...I'll definitely use your suggestions as a starting point in my research.
Hello Chris My name is Pierre Rousseau, I am from Canada. I just now discovered your channel quite by accident...the kind of accident that I really like. About 10 seconds in to the first video, I knew I was going to like it. Not just for the projects or your skills as a woodworker, but the cinematography , you obviously have some experience in visual arts of sorts !!
Being a woodworker myself, I watch a lot of woodworking videos, and I think most of them are pretty good, but your video are of a very good quality !! Thank you for making them ! I will be watching.
I am certain your videos will be successful
Sincerely your's Pierre Rousseau
Hey Pierre...thanks! I really appreciate the kind words. I'm glad you accidentally found me as well. Greetings from the U.S.!
Beautiful! And excellent video. I feel so calm now.
+Scott Haun (haunmade)
Hey Scott. Glad you're nice and relaxed now. THanks for the sub!
i'm vietnamese and i very like what you did, i hope you'll have more video like this!
thanks for video!
Hi Dang...hope you like the rest as much :)
A beautifully paced video that really captures the therapeutic nature of wood working.
+Maxwell Mooney
Thanks Maxwell! Glad it came off that way. However it comes off to people, I just tried to encapsulate what it is really like to woodwork (a slow process sometimes)
The bench is great, but man your video production is amazingly sick! I absolutely love it. You got a new fan and sub here ;-)
you're right - it's almost like the video wasn't about making a bench at all haha
Here are some great woodworking plans that you can try out: HootWood. com
While starting out in woodworking it's best to pick a plan that complements your skill level. Have you made anything from wood before? If not, then pick out a very basic plan for your first project... Check out => t.co/oLg9l5gL3F
Well done. Nice piece and well edited video, thanks.
Here are the best woodworking plans online: LukeWood.xyz
This is a superb wood working book I`ve ever read, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* . Both novice and some skilled woodworker can gain a lot of general info using this reading material. I`ve been very amazed how frequently I use this to look up woods at places like to restore and salvage spots.?
Guys the best website i found so far to learn everything about woodworking is *TopFineWoodworking. Com* Recommend to all you guys
Chris, you are so Talented , and I am so PROUD of all you have acoplished . Not only have you gone beyond beingA Great Husband , Father, Music player, Hard worker, Now this, a Fantastic Funiture wood maker. I wish you great Luck , and don't let anything hold you back from your creative abilities .❤️ Aunt Sharon👏👏👏👏👏👏
I literally come here every couple years just for life inspiration. The videography mixed with the soundtrack just really nail it for me. Young kids, circumstantial frustration, it’s so relatable. This probably seems like a lifetime ago. You’re doing well, Chris.
What a great video, i'm impressed of how calm and careful you work. I'm looking foward for more videos, greetings from Argentina
Impressive start to a new channel. I'm looking forward to more :)
I just got this package a few days ago, and I've had a hard time putting it down. There are lots of full-color pictures, with thorough descriptions of every step in the project. The plans are super easy to read and understand, unlike several others I looked at online. Definitely a valuable addition to my woodworking reference library. I would highly recommend it to anyone who's interested in woodworking *TopFineWoodworking. Com*
@Tim Olson Here's a huge collection of woodworking plans: HootWood. com
I was able to build 2 sheds in my backyard with these plans so I highly recommend them.
I like the way you start from a simple design and you change it with your preferences to do an original one. Good job !
Thanks Frojhe :)
The "cat test" clinched it for me;-)
I really like the silhouetted scene towards the end.
haha....the cat did not approve. Oddly, now she sleeps on it all day long.
just want to let you know that I really like everything you do and how you do it. the furniture, the video editing, everything. more power to you. you are an inspiration.
Thanks Katchupoy. Glad you're digging it all. Don't forget to tell your friends :)
Hey Chris, congrats on every aspect of your vid! Your style, narration, build, and sound and cinematography. There is plenty I learned. Liked, subscribed, and insta!
+Majid Al Qassimi
Awesome...thanks so much Majid!
I found your channel watching a Crafted Workshop video. I must say, the style of your video is unmatched. Your voice with the music in the background and the stellar camera angles, it’s all so soothing. I thank Mr. Johnny Brooke for guiding me to your channel and definitely look forward to watching more!
Hypnotic narration and slow tempo allowed for my imagination to take hold. This type of instructional "storytelling" is much needed in sea of ego driven jig making how to videos. Thank you for this video and I look forward to watching others you decide to create. Thanks, Mike
Thanks Mike...hope you dig the others as much :)
Seriously, This is beautiful to watch.
Thanks vinza!
I really enjoyed your video production style
+Marty Backe
Thanks Marty!
Wow, what to say.. I saw there a man that's looking for something that means something, that make he fells kinda different.. I saw humidity and professionalism, passion and patience. Yes, all of that means everything.
Congrats, you made see a hole new world. Thank you!!
Thanks Hugo...I appreciate the kind words! Hope you enjoy the other videos as much, and I appreciate the sub!
Beautiful piece of furniture, and excellent video. Suggestion, do all the sanding and break the edges before assembly. That allows you to get into all the tough corners. Also, consider applying the finish to all pieces before assemble. Just tape off the joints where glue will be applied. I've found these steps save a lot of time in the long run.
Thanks Mark. I've done that on occasion in the past. I probably won't do it on the videos though, just b/c it wouldn't be as interesting to watch. Well...unless it is absolutely necessary, then I may or may not show it. In fact, on some of the other builds (cabinets) I do sand the insides before assembly...I don't think I showed it. Can't recall though.
dude how did you manage to make a video on building a bench so captivating? I was glued the whole time! what music is this?
very very good. loved the design, the narration and the music. two thumbs up
Thanks for being so laid back.
no prob :)
Love it Chris: this bench, the design and your general approach. Looking forward to more
Well done. Great minimalist vibe, excellent music pairing. Narration is filled with not only technical aspects, but thoughts on what changed in the design process. I wish there were more artisan builds like this on youtube. You got a new sub for the excellent execution.
Huge thank you tiny moo :)
*TopFineWoodworking. Com* is a fantastic website about wood working. I took various classes as well as finished a one year diploma in carpentry at a local tech college; this is much better than any book I worked out of during those lessons. It explains everything regarding woodworking as well as complements it with helpful photos.?
I really love the relaxing style of your videos, its so peaceful nice job m8
I love the clear an simple design language on that bench. Adding the angles to the top part as well, made it one
Thanks Tomster...appreciate that. Glad you dig the bench and the details :)
That relaxed and methodical procedure to the details really inspired me! I am often too anxious to get going and finish and therefore make mistakes!
Thanks for the video! Awesome job!
Thanks Patrick...trust me, I still make mistakes :)
Just discovered your channel. I love the cinematography of your video!
And that is a very nice looking bench. Great video. Keep it up man! :)
great video, a beautiful bench and the music was super relaxing...top class stuff man.
Thanks red...appreciate it!
hey chris! i am a german joiner and i think this work is pretty great. cool design and worked out exactly.
+TheFamilyOffice
Thanks...glad you enjoyed and appreciate the sub. Check out my Coffee Table build next. It was equally challenging but in a different way.
Your videos are so relaxing. You're like the Bob Ross of woodworking
I loved him as a kid. Used to tape him on VHS every day :)
I really enjoyed the video and the accuracy and perfection you have about woodworking! keep it up man!
This is beautiful
+Pablo sin Carne
Thanks Pablo!
Hi Chris, compliments on a very nice video. Professional edit, nice and relaxed music, and a decent voice over. And the bench is very nice as well! Regards from the Netherlands, Sander.
practica, sencilla y elegante......practical, simple and elegant....beautiful job
Gracias....Thank you!
This video is fantastic. The production quality is one of the best I have seen. Then bench is amazing. Oh, and go Cubbies!
Thanks Howard...appreciate it!
The production quality for me is only rivalled by clickspring and that's a serious complement!
Wow bro you are like a zen master i really liked it, is very relaxing, ommmmm
Such a contrast to the practically silent double-speed Jimmy Diresta videos I've been watching. I like both styles. This one is very relaxing and it was great the way you talk through the details.
Thanks Mike. Glad you liked my style. It's funny because if you listen to the "Making It" Podcast, Jimmy is actually a very talkative guy with a lot of interesting stories to tell.
Simple, brilliant, AWESOME!! BRAVO!!
+Gabriel Viccioli
Thanks Gabriel!
30 seconds into this video and I can already tell this guy makes great videos so I subbed.
Thanks! Hope you enjoy the others as much.
Outstanding work on both the bench and video.
+Crafted Magazine
Thank you!
Thank You, Chris! Thank you so mush for showing so much more than this video can show. You give hope! Your vision is so inspiring, beautifull and life bringing! Thank you!
Thanks!
Love it Chris. Being unique and to stay true to your own style is hard work. Keep on being yourself and the great work you are doing :)
Awesome work ! Great vid'
+chouks59
Thanks Chouks!
I did....subscribe. 😀
This is like a new level of woodworking vids. Very nice.
+Assaf Levy
Thanks Assaf. Glad you enjoyed!
You don't look like a regular carpenter, you cut more like an artist
+Sameer Inamdar
Thanks Sameer. I definitely don't consider myself a carpenter. When I think of carpenters, I think more along the lines of constructing buildings...something I definitely couldn't do, and don't know much about. When pressed, I usually just say "I make furniture".
+Chris Salomone you don't make furniture, you create pieces of Art.
i love how the cat just doesn't care
+june sun
Haha...yeah, she was pretty unimpressed at the time - though now she naps on it almost daily!
This is by far the best woodworking book I have ever read, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* . My woodworking teacher endorses it to all of his students. I am impressed how authors managed to write very detailed topics. I`m surprised by the material and didn`t have a tough time following the lessons..
Very Frank Howarth!
+NattySawer
Thanks...huge compliment!
Exactly what I was going for!
+NattySawer I thought the exact same thing. Outstanding video and bench!
Totally I'm currently building something similar with old growth fir and maple! But I've got some 3"+ slabs
Nice...send a pic when you're finished.
Watched this to see how much better this channel has grown from the beginning and wholly smokes were you good from the beginning!! Fantastic
Its awe inspiring to watch someone taking their time, not rushing steps but leveling accuracy into the work as a means of enjoying the process and honoring ones own effort, great vid, perfect music, well done Sir!
Oh and definitely sub'd!
Thanks Tom...glad you're digging the videos, and thank you for the support :)
I am so confuse
just watch it like 50 more times and share it with all your friends and it will start to make sense :)
hi everyone ,if anyone else needs to find out about money making wood projects try Letza Woodworker Lessons ( search on google ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my m8 got excellent results with it.
Hi so confuse, I am chris
Jesus, the music choice and pace makes it sound like this was the last thing you built before dying in a horrible accident and this bench was the only thing left for your kid to remember you by.
+Sean Robertson
Hey Sean...when I built it, I didn't want to assume that I would still be around by the time I finished my next project (6 weeks is a long time). I figure I'll keep using this music...and then eventually one day I'll be right, and it will be super fitting :)
Just kidding, obviously. Check out my second video. The music isn't nearly as depressing!
Chris Salomone I liked the coffee table one with the improvised guitar. Awesome work.
Thanks Sean! It also took way less time. Glad you enjoyed!
Chris this was a joy to watch. Really, really great video and I love the design of your bench. Totally inspiring. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Phil...glad you enjoyed and thanks for watching!
This woodworking book *TopFineWoodworking. Com* contains a great deal of details about woodwork. There are some designs in the book but it is primarily explaining the procedure of how to do various things and what tools to use to accomplish them. In general, this book fulfilled my basic desire to learn about wood working.?
I only subscribed because I like how precise you are when you cut and sand near the line you made on the wood.
+Da Montanha
Thanks Da! Appreciate the sub!
This guy's great. Love him. Beautiful bench, great video.
Thanks Baby
damn , nice tools, if i had such tools id build furniture's all day every day
Wish I could...work and other responsibilities always seem to be getting in my way though.
I try to find inspiration. The peacefulness of the filming the calmness of his voice. I become enchanted. This is my 2nd video I’ve viewed. The first was the “Pastrami” Coffee Table. Current project. Thanks man...I appreciate your efforts. It’s evident in your work.
Appreciate it David...though I'll have to admit, I'm not sure which the Pastrami coffee table is. But I do love a good Pastrami :)
Plywood table with the beveled edges. “Bread, Pastrami, Bread.”
It's all coming back to me :)
This is fantastic bench! Now you can make a table with that design :) It will be beautiful.
+klaywert
You mean like a large dinning room table? That's a possibility. I actually have that on my shortlist of things to build for myself. Thank you for the compliment and the subscription!
love it....well narrated too
+smilo75
Thank you!
Beautiful work, very simplistic in design. You are correct in saying that the bench is Japanese in nature.
+Neil Yakuza
Thanks Neil. Yeah, it wasn't intentional, but I am happy the way it came out. Might open up a new world of design for me!
Really enjoyed your video. Very in touch, almost like breaking the fourth wall kind of stuff. I felt like the whole video was a ride through what your muse must have been like for the design and building process for the bench. Good stuff.
Thanks Ehm Pee. Glad you dug it...and hope you enjoy the rest of the videos as much! Appreciate the comment and support.
You have made a great work with the bench and with the video, the background music and your voice make it really nice to watch, and you work so paused, it's easy to see you enjoy and love the materials.
Thanks Zalito. Hope you dig the other videos as much :)
Beautiful piece. Simple and elegant
Subscribed! One of my favorite parts of woodworking is how peaceful it can be. In your own world with your own thoughts working out a complicated piece....and then the feeling of looking at your finished piece in its own space. You nailed it!
Thanks Cabbldr. Agreed. I've talked about that a lot before. It's really not "fun" in the normal sense. It is work, but it is still enjoyable...and it is very fulfilling.
This is a beautiful bench - and I really like the quiet, soothing music with your straightforward narration. Subscribed and looking forward to seeing more in the future!
Hi Andreas. Thanks! Hope you like the other videos as much as this one. Appreciate the sub!
I really love the design. It feels Japanese, 50s/60s (the best modern parts 😉), but somehow timeless. The structural component is very visual. You see, that the top tilts the legs outwards and the stretcher pulls it inwards. This creates a balance between push and pull, you can see. The finish is excellent. This bench has an aura, that attracts you to sit down.
Sweet! in every way, build, production and design.
+Rick Reynolds
Thanks Rick! Glad you liked it!
Like your choice of music and down to earth narration. Beautiful design too
Thanks Hydra! Glad you dug it!
+Chris Salomone What is this song/music?
Hey Zach...it is just something that a buddy and I recorded specifically for the video.
Very nice, my cat would love this. would look awesome made out of bamboo...
Your cat is more appreciative than mine Nathan :)
WOW .I can only a dream on a workshop like that ... amazing .
the bench is nice but looks more like a indoor table still great work !!
+Island surf
Thanks Island Surf. You're right...it really is more of a coffee table that it just so happens that you can sit on. Thanks for the compliment and the sub!
Have loved your work for a number of years. Beautiful build video.
Hey John. Glad you're liking the videos. Appreciate the sub!
My mind is blown! What a great production! Loved it! Homely, friendly and heartwarming!
Looking forward to more
+Giulio Lanny
Homely! I break my back making this video and this is the thanks I get? Somebody calling me ugly? Just Kidding, haha. In North American "Homely" means ugly. I think "Homey" is the version we would use here. That's pretty funny though. I'm trying to think of other "English" to "Northern English" translations that could have a similar unintended consequence. Maybe "Fanny"?
Often less is more: by merely showing the end result with a few comments, with calm music and a beautiful kitty to round it off, you stimulate the viewer's imagination. Often, that is enough.
Love this. Looking to build two soon. I would love a matching (or similarly themed) planter!!!
Excellent point at repeatability hrs accuracy! Exactly right! This is a beautiful bench! Subscribed!
Thanks Chris...appreciate it :)
This is beautiful and one of the most calming videos I've ever watched. Very well done.
+CHRIS RICE
Thanks Chris! Just put up another one which is (almost as) calming. Awesome name!
Lol, I'm part way through it already but had to stop to run some errands. I'm thinking about getting into wood working, I like to build stuff and create little things. I've been looking for projects to try. I wish the was a local place I could go work with to get more knowledge.
I'd recommend looking into some community/junior colleges. That is where I got my start. For a couple hundred bucks I was able to get a ton of hands on experience to make sure it was something I'd actually be into without having to buy any machinery. Another option would be to look for somebody local, friend of a friend, etc... Most woodworkers are usually pretty happy to share their passion and teach others.
Awesome, I used to build a lot on both school. I took 4 years of wood shop, then I spent a few years building homes. But small woodwork is what I really want to get into. I love watching furniture builds.
Cool video man, enjoyed all the stories
You must really hate glue squeeze out...you are definitely the most meticulous 'gluer' I've ever seen! Your furniture is truly beautiful, I love all the angles you use in your work.
Thanks Jacob. Side note...if I am ever interviewed for a news story, etc.. under my name I'm going to request "Gluer". No matter what the story. None of this "Eye Witness", "Home Owner" BS...I want "Gluer".
