    David, this channel is one of the few bastions of reason left in my opinion, and your position on this issue is the main reason for that. The feeling of abandonment is all too real, although it feels surreal. To see people with whom you agree on nearly everything, somehow pull the wool over their eyes the moment Islam is criticized is both baffling and quite depressing. But.. there are glimmers of hope, and one is here, and I suppose all we can do now is continue to spread the truth, and relentlessly hope that people start walking up.

      +David Pakman Show Sweden is having trouble with regard to the formation of a 'rape culture' among their Muslim immigrants, based on the country's rape statistics. Yet when the Democratic politician, Michael Hess, pointed this statistic out, saying it was a function of how the Islamic religion views women, he was fined and put on probation for 'hate speech', those administering the punishment stating that what he said was not part of 'factual and responsible discussion' _regardless if it was true or not._ Apparently Muslims are higher up on the 'oppression hierarchy' than women are in Sweden.

    • @Quercuspalustris50
      @Quercuspalustris50 Před 8 lety +12

      +David Pakman Show Also there are tonnes of Pew Research and other poll statistics that paint a rather alarming picture of what Muslims believe:
      Pew Research (2007): 26% of younger Muslims in America believe suicide
      bombings are justified.
      35% of young Muslims in Britain believe suicide bombings are justified (24%
      overall).
      *42% of young Muslims in France believe suicide bombings are justified (35%
      overall).* [consider this in the context of the latest Paris attack]
      22% of young Muslims in Germany believe suicide bombings are justified.(13%
      overall).
      29% of young Muslims in Spain believe suicide bombings are justified.(25%
      overall).
      It would be better if we had similar western polls to compare to. I'm sure if you go out to backwoods Alabama, you'll find people that probably agree that we should detonate nuclear weapons in the middle east to kill ISIS.

  • @justanotherhappyhumanist8832

    Oh my gosh, I experience this every time I criticise extremist Islam. I don't criticise muslims, just the idea of Islam and the sexism and oppression that results from it. I've been shocked by how regressive the left has become. I consider myself to be somewhere between a socialist and a social democrat, so I'm probably as far left as an American is going to get. However, I no longer feel that I identify with the American left. We shouldn't tolerate sexism and oppression under the guise of inclusivity, and I find it shocking that these people actually attempt to justify such bigotry. I've lost faith in America's future. I expected this of the right, but it saddens me so much that it has become a regular part of the left. I really don't think there's any hope for the US, now that both sides have become so regressive.

    • @NoTaboos
      @NoTaboos Před 5 lety +1

      The explanation for the enlistment of the Left in the defence of Islam is what one might call the neo-Bolshevik bigotry of the lost believers of Marxism. Having lost everything-the working class, the Third World-the Left clings to this illusion: Islam, rebaptized as the religion of the poor, becomes the last utopia, replacing those of Communism and decolonization for disenchanted militants. The Muslim takes the place of the proletarian.

      @@user-mc6zk8tc8c Similar here. I've had to abandon issues that have been paramount all my life, with deep unease, since apparently in my home of Sweden you need to be a cultural relativist open border fanatic in order to take climate change really seriously and care for maintaining the Swedish model. Put aside that those are demonstratively incompatible as current affairs increasingly demonstrate.
      Prominent voices of "the left" of the modern west care little about the aging native working class. It's a movement that cares to no small degree about putting those simpler people and their simpler thoughts in their place, with its disdain for the reprehensible straight white male (who like it or not founded all these progressive societies), its trigger warnings and grammar advice whenever arguments fail.
      Wasn't it an adorable prank Dem Claire McCaskill pulled when she bucked up the "legitimate rape" GOP candidate to trick the base of her opposition out of a moderate alternative for the GE? Rachel loved that one. You'd think she would have had a sense of humor about some Russian confusion campaigns too?
      Given that "Latino" can't be pronounced with English accent anymore, why don't members of the sensitivity-trained left pronounce Dem Congressman Cicelline [Chichelline] and GOP strategist Norquist with accurate Scandinavian pronunciation? I'll volunteer to teach both. Some animals more equal than others there, Melissa Perry?

    The worst is when ignorant "liberal" white people call people like us Islamaphobic, despite the fact that I have nothing against muslims and do not think the muslim population should be blamed for terrorrist attacks and organizations. They don't realize that their fabricated ideas of political correctness DOES NOT and WILL NEVER trump the experiences of ex-muslims and any of those who have lived in and around Islamic culture and have seen the injustices committed all their lives.

    the problem is that most liberals I associate with (I am one myself) view winning against the American right and the western right in general more importantly than they view human rights in the middle east and Muslim world. I take David's stance. I have individual Muslim friends, and I am always the first one to push back on things like Trump's Muslims ban, because it's wrong and counter-productive, and I have read the Koran and understand there is a lot of context to some of the more troublesome teachings that often gets glossed over. but I can't even bring up the fact that something like a 1/3 of all Muslims believe apostasy should be punished by death. yes, 2/3's don't, but a 1/3 is a lot of people. And unfortunately, It seems like most liberals will not take any stance that puts them on the same side as people like Glenn Beck etc.

It's like the whole world has gone insane. One thing that reaaaally sticks out with the regressives, is that if you believe in the right things for the wrong reasons, then that's hardly better than believing the wrong things for the wrong reasons. You can't have the moral high ground without the intellectual high ground yet these idiots cede both and then have the nerve to condescend to the few sane, reasonable people left.

Every religion or belief is personal and before one claiming any belief shld investigate what he is following. Sarah Haider is an example of a person who found her way out of a certain belief to another belief that is closer and personal to her, this should be respected.

      Rehman Bhatti I think the dirty little secret among the global religious community is that most have largely secularized themselves when it comes to how literally they follow their holy scriptures. Many who find themselves in a mosque, synagogue, or church leave religious services feeling that they’ve fulfilled a general spiritual obligation but don’t apply the actual scripture to their daily lives. Obviously, there are plenty of zealots who do apply literal interpretations to their lives and in the West we’ve mostly weeded them out of our political system and although our politicians still pay lip service to religious communities their policies are very much based on secular rationality. Like I said before, there are always outliers but we’ve come a long way from where we were. Unfortunately, there are still countries in the Middle East who haven’t had such luck.

So the extra-quranic narrative, explanations, biography and apologia are irrelevant to the supposed words of allah. Unless muslims think that Mohammed was god incarnate; that is the only trick that allows for a 'prophet' to have his personal actions and views to be considered as coming directly from god/the divine.

Coming from a liberal family myself, my dad encouraged us to attend uni and work, didn’t like the idea of arranged marriage and even dropped me to my first dance at school when I was 12 years old. However there were sides of my family who were more strict and sides which were even more liberal..ones that would make liberals in the West look conservative!
    The reason she doesn’t represent me is that she completely negates the vital role of US/UK foreign policy on radicalisation.
    Read Mark Curtis and his book on the role of Britain in Islamic radicalisation across the globe. Keep in mind that Hizbut Tahrir, the extremist organisation that radicalised Nawaz, got over £100k from the British government.

    I am a muslim, and I wonder......
    1. If she (and even David) understand what shariah law is, forget about knowing, I wonder if they even had a book on shariah law (bcoz its not about cutting people's hands when caught for stealing or stoning when caught for illegal sexual intercourse, its primarily about giving citizens their equal rights, be it men or women ).
    2. If she ever questioned that even when Quran talks about husband disciplining their wives, the prophet Muhammad (upon whom be peace) has never beaten, slapped or even inflicted any sort of pain to his wives ? Because its weird, when the the person who was thought to have receive the revelation himself never even practice it.
    3. If she even know what 'disciplining their wives' meant ? Its not whenever the husband feels his wife has done wrong he resorted to beating, you have to go through several stages, the beating is a last resort. But even then the prophet didn't pratice and muslims aren't encouraged to. Even then the beating has to fulfill several things namely, mustn't be on the face, must not leave marks etc.
    4. Why does she started reading the Quran critically after moving to USA, why doesn't she start reading it earlier? I mean, the Quran is not simply there for you to just read and earn blessings, it tells you dozens of time to reflect, to ponder, and to think.
    5. If she ever contacted as many Muslim scholars to clarify her questions as she does in contacting as many atheists to ask them questions.
    5. Why does she think it is liberal when you can move to college? Can't she see there are millions of female muslims studying in colleges and universities, and that there are more Muslim females in higher institutions in many of Muslim majority countries as compared to males? Where does it say in Islam that females are not allowed to go study far away from their homes? Just because there are muslims who don't allow their daughter to study far away, does that mean Islam prescribe that teaching?
    The final one......I wonder if one day, all of her misconceptions are answered, will she become a Muslim again? or will she find one way or another to argue, to spin or to interpret what Islam tells her to do, even though they might not be logical, just to fulfill her desires.......may God show us the way

      Sympathy I know it is quite sad I have to say it. But a Muslim in US is not the same than a Muslim in Argentina or a Muslim in Singapore. So people should understand it as a personal experience, and not draw general conclusions to encompass all Muslims.

    Okay, serious question, can people disagree with David and Sarah on this subject WITHOUT either of them crying about being called an Islamophobe or Zionist? It's such a straw man to say all of your opponents are mischaracterizing and insulting you. There are REAL disagreements in this debate and YOU TWO are ignoring the issues--the issues of geopolitics and regional stability and the degree to which those cause radicalism and acts of desperation rather than a book that most of them can't read or haven't read.
    It's immoral and inhumane to look past the injustices people in that part of the world suffer and say, "What a minute, what religion do you practice? I think there are issues with your religion." The type of suffering people in that part of the world endure would make any of us a maniac, a radical, an extremist that clings to culture and homeland because their family and their land and their belongings were all lost forever. The damage that our bombs inflict is multi-generational. But wait, let's have more discussion and talk about poll results rather than try to stop the rollercoaster of complete instability that our nation had a role in setting up.

    • @masonterhorst
      @masonterhorst Před 8 lety +4

      But you did just mischaracterize their views. They don't say that our bombs are a good thing. They have never said that there aren't situations in which geopolitics play a huge factor in extremism. It is also not at all an odd question to learn about the religion of people in these situations. If you spent some time learning about the contents of the Quran and Hadith you might notice that parts of both are literally a manual for martyrdom and in-group out-group behavior. We don't get suicide bombings committed by Jains and that's because the core ideas of Jainism are nonviolence. When you think that a martyrs death ensures you a place in heaven (higher than you would get otherwise) and also that all of the infidels you take with you to the death are saved from their unrighteous lives, it is no wonder that you might blow yourself up near as many non-Muslim people as possible. The Quran is being used to convince people of exactly that. Not nearly all Muslims, but it is happening.

    there is nothing new or any stronger reasons than other available thousand anti-Islamic criticisms all around the world in different medias. this whole interview doesnt show a single point that can strengthen any anti-Islamic thought.. the verse she has mentioned from the Quran about bating wife has something more to say. again none of the verses of Quran will be accepted by anyone who reads it to find mistakes.. Quran is a book for believers.. being a believer or trying to become a believer is the very first requirement to seek knowledge in Quran. there are more atheists available in the google with super strong anti-Islamic ideas and thousand debates about different issues.. but ya.. saying something against any believe which is being practiced by a huge number of people will help you to get invitation from different medias ..

    When you reference that poll about Sharia law, you also don't *define* Sharia law... It's a misleading tactic.
    Sharia law that IS enacted by specific countries, even in democracies; doesn't entail everything you *think* it does. As in: no death penalty for Apostasy, no hands getting cut off, no stoning's, etc. Now in other places, it DOES denote that, and it's brutal and insane.
    If you look around the world at countries that enact some form of Sharia law, they all differ, country by country. I get that Republicans have turned the word into a boogie man, but as a Canadian, I smirk every time someone parrots that statistic, like they just discovered the devil.
    Eqypt follows Sharia law, India as well, Israel enacts Sharia law on personal matters for religious muslims as well.
    *It just means Islamic law.*
    now I personally find any type of law being based off religious teachings is dangerous and butt-fucking stupid, but I can't not say anything, when you repeat a very deceiving statistic - well the stat itself isn't deceiving, it's how it's used.
    Again, forms of Sharia law are applied in Israel to Muslim citizens on personal matters. I assure you, they're not dealing out hangings and stoning in Israel. *you should know this David.* I wish you would address this instead of repeating Sam Harris's purposefully misleading talking point.

      So you are against Shariah Law, but you laugh at western conservatives who use the Shariah Law as a boogeyman, because, what? The cons are too unsophisticated for a cosmopolite like you?
      Shariah Law sucks and should be rejected everywhere, no matter how mild a particular version is.
      GOT IT?

    • @mangaas
      @mangaas Před 8 lety +1

      *****
      I laugh at people who think Sharia law (islamic law) is the same everywhere, and that it only entails hangings, stonings, etc. (it does, and it doesn't) Ergo, I bring up my example of Israel enacting Sharia law.
      Most people don't know that. Does Israel strike you as an extremist muslim country?
      Most people are stupid and get their news about Sharia law within the last 5 years from Republicans who are trying to paint an entire religion as "the other" so Americans feel like they are evil boogeymen that can be killed with drone strikes and bombings.
      Islam has been around for a very long time, the RECENT focus on their religion and extremism is... I guess it's just a coincidence, right?
      Christian extremism in Africa is never a focus, no matter how many people are killed. Yet countries like Iran are somehow a focus. There are a lot of fucked up places on earth, and not because of Islam. The FOCUS on Islam isn't natural. It's a concerted effort, and the motive is money and resources. It always has been.
      So again, I LAUGH at western conservatives.
      G'day!
