  • My father John Tyrrel, who had been on the staff at Southern TV for some years, first entered the public imagination as The Mystery Tipster, blacked out in sillhouette he became an overnight sucess tipping many winners at good prices including True Lad at 16/1 in The Schweppes. Eventually he was revealed and appeared almost weekly on Southsport continuing his sucess tipping the first three home in correct order in Troy's Derby in 1979. He followed that up with the correct Tricast in 1980 Caesarewitch and another big win in The Schweppes for Bootlaces. Here he is tipping Aldiniti to win the National at 10/1. His other two selections completed the course too, today with up to 8 places we'd have cashed in on 5th Senator Maclacury at 20s while Sebastion V finished 11th, but that's not all we visit the Cranborne stables of one horse trainer, anaesthetist and publican Mita Easton and meet her barman Malcolm Batters, possibly the tallest jockey to ever jump a fence. That one horse Martinstown who had madw a reputation for himself in 4 mile chases. Unfortunately Malcolm & Matinstown didn't quite make it with the old horse parting company with his jockey at the 27th.

    Love all your old racing vids. Long may they keep coming! Your father was a racing legend with the punters and he’s also the voice of the results on the arcade racing game with horses on sticks with GG doing the commentary (still in arcades to this day) so his legacy still lives on.

    .... "The fences might find him out" ...a phrase not often heard now sadly in relation to the National.

    People of a certain age will know that voice as much as they knew John Hamner. Wonderful to see and wasnt his assessment of Spartan Missile spot on too? Very insightful and well turned out in a dapper suit. Do you know specifically what was meant by John Francome was offered the chance, but John Thorne elected to ride? I recall, John Francome gave up the ride on Royal Exile because he coudnt do the weight and felt a few lbs o/w would not serve the horse well. That said, I think the legacy of John Thorne and Spartan Missile gave the 81 National a dimension that continues to live. Malcolm Batters retired soon after to be replaced as head lad and barman by Alan Jones who went on to ride Brit in the 1987 National. He was only 6'2.5 and is a trainer now

      I agree that is a strange statement considering that Thorne was owner trainer and rider, could it have been a suggestion from Nicky Henderson who was engaged to his daughter and assistant to Fred Winter?

    I do wonder Noel, what was your dad's process of selecting the winners for South Sport like and when did he and the producers have a meeting about it every week?

    • @roderigodetriano
      @roderigodetriano  Před rokem

      No meetings in those days it was all unrehearsed and spontaneous. He did spend many hours watching replays and poring over the form books

      @@roderigodetriano Pre-1986 and SIS putting every race on TVs in betting shops it was a lot tougher to follow midweek meetings without attending or having immediate footage?
