We Need To Talk About Rasmus Højlund

  • Manchester United have come under a lot of fire this season but the discussion around Rasmus Højlund is ridiculous. Signed as a 20 year old to lead the line for Man Utd, the Danish international has had to adapt to a new league, a new style of play & a new country. What’s more is that Erik Ten Hag has largely used him as a target man style striker, when much of his best work for Atalanta came from the channels. Despite being used in a very different way AND barely getting any service from his teammates, Højlund scored 10 goals in his first Premier League season. So today, let’s talk about Rasmus Højlund.

    Thank Dave, great analysis. It was transparently obvious that he was getting no service and I couldn't believe, after that supposed dressing room leak came out after the Arsenal game saying that players weren't passing to him because they had no confidence in him, that EtH reacted by dropping him! That was awful man management. At that point Højlund had managed just under 100 touches in the oppos box the WHOLE season! I love the way he reacted coming off the bench and scoring in the next two games too … the Brighton one taking matters into his own hands!

  • @LordPiddlington1912
    @LordPiddlington1912 Před 23 dny +16

    My gut feeling is that EtH wanted Kane because he's more of a deep lying forward who plays in his wingers to take shots (and as we've seen at Bayern, can still do a better than decent job working with a 10 behind him) he was the perfect solution to Man Utd's current attacking setup. Hojlund is not at his best because fundamentally our wingers are looking to score themselves, rather than play him in. I can't shake the feeling that not enough work is being done on the training ground to score goals when in sustained periods of possession, we're so reliant on scoring on the break or from an individual moment of flair.

      They all occupy the box too much and look to score themselves.
      Antony and Hojlund are Ten hag signing though. Then he knew they already have Rashford, Garna, and Amad. Plus he's the one giving them tactics/instructions. It's all back to Ten Hag tbh. If there's anyone more confused with themselves it's Ten Hag.

    I think the problem for United in regards to attacking the box, is that they either attack too quickly in a counter attack and don't have enough players forward, or else they attack too slowly and the opposition have plenty time to organise, and we can't break them down.
    It's like there's no in-between, where they can play quickly up the pitch like other teams do, usually it's either a one-on-one with the keeper, or else the winger holds up the play, for too long and the chance is gone.

Team goals from positioning and curved runs gives a higher return ( look at city and arsenal) , this is my slight criticism of Bruno who usually doesn’t play the simple ball , and is most times our only creative player looking to pass into the final third.
    Another criticism is a lack of crosses from the full backs who should be looking to find Rasmus . I have seen an improvement in mc Tomminay making the late run but more is needed in terms of a system of play.

      @MrLePov Před 19 dny

      @ecofriendly0 It's not the same midfield, as Casemiro is a shadow of the player he was last season, and while Mainoo has been great for his age, Eriksen was very good last season.
      Plus, I only meant Ten Hag hadn't changed anything DURING this season, I wasn't talking about last season.
      Last season, Rashford was the focus of the attack, and Weghorst was in a supporting role, hence why Rashford did so well. This season, Rashford isn't the focus of the attack, but really neither is Hojlund, which is partly why Rashford has dropped off so badly, but also why Hojlund hasn't had a lot of service.
      Furthermore, statistically speaking, Bruno is better at providing chances for wingers than for strikers, so Ten Hag needed to adapt his tactics if he wanted to give Hojlund service, but he couldn't manage it, which is why Hojlund only got like 35-40 shots this season.

    I firmly believe we need to drop a forward and go with wing backs a a 4-4-2 diamond. We've attempted to go with two 10s at times, but I'd rather two 8s and a 6. 6 can drop between CBs on slow build up, and 8s can backfill for wingbacks when they attack and give width. Rasmus can be one of the 2 up top with any of our attacking wingers being the other, or bring in a more suitable player for that role. Not a single winger in our squad is a natural wide player, so we need to get quality out there somehow. Frimpong one side, and somebody like Maatsen on the other.

This implies that he’s pretty clinical with the chances that are created for or by him, and looking at a game by game breakdown, a quarter of those goals have come from games of him having an overall xG less than 0.2. There’s also only been 6 games out of the 4096 minutes he’s played where he had an xG above 1.0. Chance creation for the striker has been a pressing issue for Manchester United for years now. Beyond that, as a young striker, at one of the most high pressure clubs in the world, who also happen to be in one of their worst periods in recent memory, starting the season not being able to play 90 minutes for the first month or two due to injury, any return of above 15 goals is still respectable.

    If United played to Rasmus's strengths by crossing from the goal line, whilst filling in and around the box, he would score in the high 20s.
    Especially by using a high press and his pace, dribbling skills. Direct quick attack.
    United front players are blessed with pace & skill but our midfield does not have the pace throughout to join defence to attack. Mainoo is a huge bonus, and can join and we have the creativity of Bruno but we need additional pace driving forward from left and right defence so the counter attacking is joined up and done at pace.
    That's my opinion.
    Having seen Rasmus play for Denmark I have no doubt if he got the right service he could easily be a 30 Goals a season. He is fast, he can dribble, he is strong and he can finish. He is a real talent and we need to play to his strengths, otherwise there was no point in spending those millions on his services!

    One of the things that most excited me about him when United first started talking about getting him was watching the way he would run at the last man from deep and play an early ball past him, and outrun the defender to essentially get on the end of his own through ball. When he scored those it was like he should be given a Goal AND an Assist.
    Where he needs to improve is his positioning in a congested box.
    Too often this season he has either been too far ahead of a ball into the box, or too deep to get on the end of it.
    When Scott McTominay is managing to do that job better, you know it's an area that needs working on. I think it's why the wingers have been told to shoot if they feel a chance is on.
    But, he's still a kid.
    He has plenty of time to develope that side of his game.

Like they are on two different teams. It's hard for a CF to score goals when the other team essentially has an extra defender. Also we've seen in the last two games how much easier it is to score goals off the bench on this team and generally how toothless McTominay has looked ever since he started doing the tough end of the bargian and played as a starter.

    You have to look at this season as an outlier. With the insane injury situation throughout the season, there was no way Untied could have two overlapping fullbacks, meaning wingers would often stay wide. There would also be little to no successful build up as Martinez, the player brought in to build up from the back was out for most of the season, meaning Onana's strong sides weren't any good. I think you'll see a much different United next season if injuries aren't as bad, as well as a good transfer window.

    I’m hopeful that this can be improved with, counter-intuitively, a mobile centre back and an attacking left back to replace/support Shaw.
    If United have some pace at CB, they can play higher to allow Onana to start possession with the ball at feet - it’s what we signed him for, but he can’t do it with Maguire/Evans/Varane in front of him. Licha + one though and United can compress that midfield chasm by a good ten yards.
    Rashford had his best season with Shaw consistently behind him, advancing up to the 18yd box and providing an occasional threat of cutting inside. If he can do that again (or United sign a capable deputy/replacement), Rashford will score goals and create them for Hojlund.
    The Hojlund/Rashford/Garnacho trio don’t offer loads in the air but neither did Mane/Salah/Firminho really. United also have Amad to rotate - if anyone can convince EtH that playing the same XI week in week out in 22/23 might have led to the injuries of this season.
    I’m sure that a summer off will do Casemiro the world of good, and that players like him and Bruno can create opportunities for Hojlund.
    I honestly think that United aren’t that far away, and a couple of reinforcements and a more settled back line could make a real difference - with the right coaching…

    @joa4339 Před 23 dny

    Great vid! I've not been overly impressed with Højlund (I have since January tho!), but it is both about his own fit in the team and how his teammates play him. It is a big ask to spearhead a high press AND also being a target man, latter not matching his skillset at all. Pretty much all of that is on the manager and how he's instructing his team to create and position players for both attack and defense. ETH and his coaching squad have been quite lazy in what they ask of the attacking players - the positions are very static (extremely wide wingers and no.9 playing his opposition CBs deep with his aggressive starting position, resulting in tight opposition lines and our CBs not stepping forward to create overload as supposed to) and the no.10 and no.8 are not providing enough footprint and support in final 3rd (Bruno is a pop-up support for our wingers mostly, therefore not possible for Højlund to assist him inside the box). I don't get why there are no adjustments and visible proof of preparation to every fixture and opposition. The players won't improve their tactical mindset and they rely too much on individual instructions (that doesn't have the Pep detail and precision). You won't get those to adjust during a half if things are not working well. The team is just not very organic and dynamic, which is quite absurd if the manager is dead set on playing transitional football.
    Hopefully ETH or a new manager can use Højlund skillset better next season. It feels like ETH wanted and prepared for Harry Kane and that play making style for his wingers. Before the season started I thought it would be an acceptable season for Højlund with 10 league goals. I say definitely so considering his CL goals as well. Eventually with more experience a United striker should be 15-20 league goals every season. In 5 years time Højlund might be one of the clubs legendary strikers, potential is there.

    United have unfortunately had a very piecemeal attack this season and it has resulted in sporadic chances, not periods of consistent pressure on the opposition. We’ve also missed Luke Shaw heavily this year. Without Shaw, we have a very left-biased attack in terms of the forwards, but without the back up of the full back, that forward ends up attacking doubled up defenders. Knowing that we had Wan Bissaka filling in at left back for a number of games towards the end of the season, it really stunted the play. We put Dalot in at left back instead against Newcastle and Brighton, two harder games on paper than those we played with Wan Bissaka, and look what happens. United need Shaw fit, or a new first choice left back this summer.
