- The San Diego Botanic Garden is a 37-acre sanctuary in Encinitas, California, about a 30-minute drive north of the city of San Diego. Just a mile from the Pacific Ocean, the Garden is virtually frost-free, allowing a wide range of plants to flourish.

This is just one of my favorite places to visit with my husband it's so breath taking and peaceful as a gardener I can truly appreciate this beautiful place in which I can visit whenever I want.

I loved the Quail Garden. It was so informal and kind of run down: all the focus was on the plants. And such plants! Some still haunt my memories. I'm from Alaska and I was able to go 3 times: 3 years in a row, and I'd spend all day. My favorite areas were the chaparral bridge, the Pinetum, and another area kind of hidden with marvelous trees and shrubs. It was wonderful to be in such a peaceful place with such marvelous plants. I've been to many gardens over my lifetime and most were far greater than Quail, but Quail was always my favorite.
It wouldn't be now. I understand that nowadays we have to turn gardens into playgrounds for young and old: for people who aren't interested in gardens and plants. I understand. I guess you gotta get them in somehow and hope they'll get the garden bug... but I suspect they don't. I suspect they just enjoy the entertainment. Oh well. Times and culture change.
Hello @miketackabery7521 . I can relate to your comments. I, too, visit gardens grand and small and often find the smaller gardens among my favorites. The San Diego Botanic Garden recently paved over paths in my favorite spot, the bamboo garden, and in doing so, many plants were removed. As a repeat visitor, I lament the loss of the way it used to be but appreciate that people who couldn’t navigate the paths previously can now enjoy more of the garden. Things are ever-changing and never so true as in a garden.
Because of the special place Quail Botanical Garden has in your memories, you might enjoy the book by Sally Sandler, “Sowing Seeds of Wonder: The Stories of Ruth and Charles Larabee and the Origins of San Diego Botanic Garden.” It’s a great story, with unexpected twists and turns, that shaped the spirit of the garden.
Botanic gardens are increasingly expanding their venues to include non-garden activities. I hope that as more people are exposed to the beauty and peacefulness that surrounds them, they may be inclined to venture further into the garden and, in turn, be captivated by the awesomeness of nature.
Alaska is on my bucket list. Are there any botanic gardens there that you would recommend?
Short answer to your query: no. There are a couple/three that pretend to be, but I wouldn't recommend them. Our choices are so limited that most serious gardeners spend much of their time in zone denial. Every large town and city has a nursery that has been instrumental in bringing in various plants, so you see large numbers of certain things, but few or none of others that are popular in other towns. Here in Kodiak I'm astonished at the number of a few plants: primulas veris, florindae, and alpicola are in just about every yard that pretends to garden. But where I'm from (Sitka) it's the minor bulbs and shrubs. The Anchorage area lives for annuals.
You'll be well served to ask for the neighborhood with the most gardens and then simply walk it. You'll be surprised by the tiny size of the gardens, limited palette, and exuberance of the plantings.

In Chicago, we have two famous greenhouses in Garfield Park and Lincoln Park. I grew up near the Garfield Park one.
