    Thanks for this detailed video. I changed my fluid at 63k miles yesterday on a 2017 kia forte using this video and the service manual for reference. The fluid and metal shavings on the drain plug looked the same as in your video. All is well now and shifting is noticeably smoother. Will repeat again soon. The only minor issue I ran into with my car is the fill port plug is obstructed by the neutral safety switch, which I had to loosen to make adequate clearance directly above it. Nothing difficult but I was uncertain about messing with it initially.

    Top video! I have now done my ATF in our MY13 Sorento but with the 2.2TDI engine that is slightly different to the video. The battery box covers the fill plug so it was too complex to take out the battery & its holder, so I drained the fluid just under 3 litres came out (dark as yours at 105,000Km where the dealer (stealer) dropped it also at 60K) and then filled it back up again via the oil level plug on the side with my $18 oil pump that screws into the top of the 4 litre plastic pack and took just over 3 litres when we checked the level. It was an hours work and saved me heaps and box shifts smoother. I used the Penrite ATF LV that is KIA/Hyundai approved full syn. I also use this same fluid in my Toyota SUV's as it also meets Toyota WS fluid.

    Great video. I changed atf in my 2011 sorento 3.5 v6. I just measured what came out and put the same back in. 4.5 litres drained out.I did not open the level plug so had to add the atf SLOWLY from the top. In the 3.5 v6 transmission the top plug and level plug are metal not plastic.

    Top quality video, Richard, my compliments. Good lighting, good focus, and you were well prepared, no "um", "uh". Changing my ATF soon as weather cooperates, and yes, I'll do the same thing - rinse and repeat after a few hundred miles. On many of my older vehicles I got in the habit of, when doing an engine oil change, using a using a Harbor Freight hand pump to siphon out as much ATF as I could, measure the volume removed, and put in that same volume of fresh ATF. Even if it was only 2-3 quarts, that's 2-3 quarts of fresh ATF every couple thousand miles. But always my first two ATF changes were full open-the-drain-plug drains in order to get that crud off the magnet.

    Such a helpful video. Own a 2014 Sorento LX with the 2.4, same tranny and procedure. Changed fluid at 116k (went by manual). Fluid came out black. Will do another flush after 1000k or so.
    Reason I decided to change was your video. Thank you so much, video was extremely helpful.

    Just did my 2016 Kia Soul+ yesterday; 39K on the clock. The ATF oil wasn't too bad and the magnet on the drain plug didn't have much accumulation, but I am glad I did it anyway. I have one more change to complete before winter. Then, maybe I'll change one gallon each year. Thanks for an excellent video!

      I'm getting ready to do this on my sister's 2019 which is the same as your 2020. Was there anything in particular that you noticed was different once you actually did the oil change? I was also wondering why the banjo bolt was not aligned back to the original spot when tightening it on. Seems the holes in the bolts should align to the hose to allow oil to flow

    Thank you very, very much for the time and effort you put into making this video - it helped me tremendously in the knowing the details of making the fluid change. This was my first experience working with a 'sealed' transmission without a dipstick so there was a lot to know and learn in order to not destroy my Kia. Pouring the fluid very slowly through through the fill port was especially critical - as well as working with the level port - another thing that was new to me.

      True, I cannot trust dealers anymore, now that I have 2 brand new Hyundais I DIY everything, and will DIY everything besides strut/shocks since I'm not familiar with them. I do my own oil changes, will do trans fluid changes, brake pad/rotors, sparkplugs, bulbs when due.

    Great videoI just did the flush on my wife's 2014 Sorrento with 28000 miles. The oil was not too bad. It was still red. A bit darker than new. The magnetic drain plug did have a lot of metallic sludge.I don't understand why Kia does not make it mandatory to flush the transmission because the break in period obviously produces a lot metallic sludge. I agree with you doing a second flush .

      +Christian Torress You are right on the metal filings. On my second drain and fill 5,000 miles after my first service there was considerably less fillings on the magnetic plug and I attribute that to the fact that at least two quarts of the original fluid was still left in the transmission after the first drain and fill. The fluid was pretty clean but not new red. I will do a video on the third drain and fill on my next oil change which will be another 5,000 miles. Thanks.

    Thanks for the video! Been holdin off on the change because all shops want over $200 to do it. I did it myself for under $40. NOTE: on my 2011 Sorento 3.5L, the drain plug is partially blocked by the engine cradle. I couldnt use the socket i bought for it. I ended up using a channel lock to get it open and close it. Damaged the edge of the washer so i used my dremel to smooth it out to ensure it didnt affect my seal when tightened. Ill be buying a 24mm wrench for the next time unless i can find a shorter socket. Thanks again!

      Also, our has 178k miles on it. Way overdue. Fluid looked like engine oil. Cant wait to do second change just to know its got more new than old in it.

    Richard, I spent 30 minutes trying to find my dip stick on my Sedona before I finally called the Dealership thinking I had lost my mind. I had not heard of a "Closed System Transmission" and had not found your video at that time. The local Kia dealership said the same thing to me on the phone that the dealership told you on the phone call but the Sedona is every 60k miles to service the Transmission. When I asked how they did the service, they explained that they hook it up to a machine and flush it all. They quoted me $289 to service the transmission. There is a filter on the Sedona but it requires the pan in the front where your fluid level check plug is located to be removed and the filter is then accessible from there.
    Unfortunately had already dropped my fluid, thinking, no problem, I will drop the fluid, and fill the fluid through the dip stick. After calling the dealership, they had me believing that I had no way to get the fluid back into the transmission. There is not a nice big fill plug like on the Sorento, right next to the battery but rather as described above, a small #6 allen fill plug all the way to the back of the transmission housing that had loctite applied to it. I had to take that air intake channel off and diconnect the air filter housing attached to the throttle body off the one side, pull the battery, the battery holder tray before I could find that little fill plug. I really appreciate you showing how to check the fluid fill level because the dealership lead me to believe that I could not and that I had to tow in my vehicle due to dropping the fluid already and let them service the transmission.

    Nice video. I just did a flush on my 2016 Sorento LX V6. One tip regarding the funnel and avoiding fluid backup/burping: stick a small plastic tube down the funnel. One end of the tube will go down inside the funnel and into the fill port on the top side of the transmission. The other end just sticks out the top side of the funnel and acts as an air vent while you pour in new fluid. You just pour in fluid along side of the plastic tube and down into the funnel. It allowed me to fill it much faster that way, and almost no spillage.
    Also, I did a full flush by disconnecting one of the hoses going to the ATF warmer/cooler (the yellow-labeled one, if I recall correctly). On the V6 model, the hoses actually point straight down to the ground so you can just stick a bucket underneath it to collect the old fluid. You can run the engine to drain more fluid, and shut it off to stop draining. I replaced 1 quart at a time until the fluid coming out of the hose looked clean. After that, I basically did what you did in this video.. a drain and refill. That way the drain plug gets cleaned of metal shavings after all the old fluid has been flushed out. I'm obviously wasting some new fluid doing it this way, but it's still less costly than having a flush done by a pro tech.

    Just did this today on my wife's 2016 Hyundai Elantra. At first I thought I would hate that this Transmission did not have a dipstick. But I kinda like the plug method. Makes it a little easier in it's own way. But at the same time, I do like seeing on the dipstick that its at the proper level. Anywho, Thanks for this video. I didn't realize You need to check the levels after running the car at operating temperature. So now I have something to do later. :)

    I just changed our 2018 Santa Fe Sport Ultimate 2.0 turbo trans fluid at 24,935 miles with Hyundai SP-III fluid. With engine cold, I first drained the fluid from the plastic plug and was surprised how much drained out (about a quart). Then, I drained the rest from the metal drain plug. Then, I carefully poured all the old fluid (mine was nice and red from mostly highway use) to an empty five quart jug of Mobile 1 synthetic. Then I took a new jug of Mobile 1 synthetic oil and put the new oil jug and the old fluid side-by-side. The old fluid was a tad higher level than the new oil's level so I drained a few ounces of the old fluid into the drain pan until both jugs were exactly level. Then, I measured the few ounces of old fluid that made the jug of old fluid more than 5 quarts. It was 3 ounces. After replacing the plastic level plug and the metal drain plug, I put 5 quarts of fluid into the fill hole using one quart bottles and then I poured 4 ounces more (one extra ounce for small amounts of fluid burped off fill hole and residual fluid left inside the five, one quart containers). I don't feel the need to drain any fluid out from the level plug since I know how much fluid came out and how much I added.

      ....I don't feel the need to drain any fluid out from the level plug since I know how much fluid came out and how much I added......
      so it's wrong . he got lots of extra fluid ? he doesnt care about level.. and you just thumb him up

    Richard thanks for the video, I have 2017 Sportage with a 6 speed TX, (looks similar) I was wondering if these transmissions have filters in them however that question was answered when you inquired about having a service done. So the magnetic bolt and the screen are the only devices to capture swarf.
    What is your opinion if you serviced the TX at say 30000 miles to avoid having to remove the residual oil that is still in the TX? The dealer suggested to me these TX's are sealed for life and required no fluid change. Seems an odd thing to say for folk who make money from service work. Unfortunately I cannot service the TX yet as the vehicle is still under warranty and a home service would void the warranty.

    On the subject of Kia Sorentos, do you or anyone out there have ANY ideas on how to soften the really harsh ride of my 2011 Sorento? We feel every little bump on every road. Very uncomfortable ride.

      Thank you very much. Changing the suspension springs for softer springs would make the ride more soft as well as a higher profile tire as well. I would discuss these changes with your dealer to make sure it is safe to modify your vehicle in any way. Thanks.

    Great video. Thanks for the torque info and sizing. Wondering if this can be done on the ground. I only have two jack stands and one floor jack so not sure how to keep it level w/out jacking up and down a bunch.

      It may be possible but it would be very tight and uncomfortable to do. Taking the bottom engine cover off on the ground would not be my idea of fun with the vehicle on the ground.     This is a GREAT video but I think this is for a 3.5L. I have a 2.4L GDi and it's slighly different. In your video, you have access to the fill plug right away but on the 2.4L, I had to remove the Air Duct (same as you), the battery and the battery pan. then the video is the same.
    For the pan under the car, I have 8 bolts + 4 push pin attached to the bumper + 2 push pin unter the bumper.
    FYI, my push pin cannot be unscrewed, the phillips head is just for fun, I have to pull the middle piece and then everything pulls out. Hope that helps others.

      Follow the instructions in this video. What he's saying is that when you drain the transmission fluid, only about 5 quarts will actually come out. The other 2.8 quarts is still inside the internal components of the transmission and will NOT drain out. So when you add the new fluid, you should only add about 5 quarts.

    This is truly a really great video Richard Lloyd. However, I want to point out that this is not the same procedure for a 2011 Kia Sorento EX model as I believe your vehicle is the Sorento XM model. The check fill plug is not like yours, mine was just a standard 24mm bolt. When you drain the transmission fluid on a 2011 Kia sorento ex series, the car needs to be flat yes and than you have to lift the car up, open the fill check bolt, and add your fluid back into the transmission and keep filling until you see a stream of the oil come out of that check fill hole.. Almost the same procedure, but for this particular job, the sorento ex is only slightly different.

    Richard, I notice is the selling costs on the Trans fluid that are being sold there. Normally, I always found buying larger sizes to save money but it's opposite for this. The 3 gallon pack at almost $93 which then is like $31 per gallon then $7.75 per quart. The 6 quart box which is $6.50 per quart yet it's cheaper to buy 6 single quarts at $5.63/qt. However, I think your viewers would find a deal at Walmart get a huge savings. Walmart has the same Valvoline MaxLife Multi-Vehicle (ATF) Full Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid product at $17.87 for a gallon. It may be on sale from $21 but it's been priced like this for a while. Otherwise the same cost as Amazon for a single quarts at $5.63. Hope this helps some of your viewers, unless you get a cut from Amazon sales thru your video. Then I get it since you are going thru the trouble and time of making the videos for us.
    Anyway, I also just want to give you a BIG THANKS for the very informative videos. Keep up the great work!! Your my goto guy on kia sorento's.👍

    I had to replace the radiator in my 2012 Sorento v6 3.5L I forgot put one the hoses going to the fluid cooler back and i cranked the vehicle caused a big spill so I did flushed all but got only 1.5 liters out.. ? Does it still having 2 liters inside ? I have added 4.75 liters I drove a bit it shift smooth and on time...
    Any advice please

      Take a look at your transmission and compare it to what you see in the video. Many KIA's and Hyundai's (Same company) use this transmission. Verify by calling your local KIA dealer's service department they should be able to verify the specs for you. Thanks for watching. All the best.

      I noticed on the top there is the fill plug, but it does not have the square 3/8" drive plug in it like yours does. Also there is a breather line with a plug that is easier to access, can you fill using that? I noticed that yours has it as well

    I would like to point out that I have a 2015 Optima which uses the same procedure and the Kia dealer wants 179.00 to drain and refill the transmission fluid. I know that Kia says the transmission fluid does not have to be changed until after 100k. I was a mechanic for 15 years and I don't believe in leaving ANY fluid in a car for 100k. Strangely, the 100k mark is supposedly when the warranty expires which means that you leave the trans fluid in until the warranty expires so Kia can sell you a new transmission. I will change my trans fluid every 30k. If I can't find some repair shop to perform this task for around 100.00 then I will wait until cooler weather (In Georgia) and do it myself (I am 66), so I move a little slower and I'm not in a hurry. So, to me, dealers are putting themselves out of business by charging exorbitant amounts of money for a simple drain and refill. Oh and thanks so much for the video Mr. Lloyd.
