    Best video I have seen.My 2017 sorento was missing 2 bolts for bellypan the
    day I drove it home from "dealer".I called service and asked them to send me 2
    bolts as we were 40 miles away. It took weeks for this to take place and many
    emails.I have just turned 20,000 miles and wouldn't trust that dealership to do
    the job right, thanks to your video.

    Richard, Thanks for the video. Answered all the questions I had for my 2015 Sedona. Glad to find the full plug on the side of the tranny so I could get the proper fill level rather than depending on the fluid level being correct previous to being drained.

    Thanks man, you got a subscriber out of me for this. My kia dealer wants almost $300. I thought the fluid had to be hand pumped through the case like my camry but now that I know it dont I can follow your video. I cant thank you enough. A million thanks 🙏

    Richard, I appreciate the in-depth video. Honestly, it was easier to do than the video makes it seem. The fill plug was not that hard to get to. I am also missing the underbelly splash pan (bought it used with 28k miles) so that part was skipped. I didn't obsess about how much fluid I put in either. I just poured it in until it started coming out the fill level hole, let it drain a bit as I put way too much in, closed it up, put it through the gears, pulled the fill level plug again just to make sure it was still a steady stream, and then put 700ish mL in and done. But hey, thanks, the visual reference was key. Also, this cured cured a very wonky-shifting transmission, hard shifts, delay and then a jerk... shifts smoothly and quietly in the background now. Also, make sure you go to your dealer and have them check to see that you have the latest transmission shift logic; newest is only a year or two old I think.

    Thank you for sharing the video. I just changed the transmission oil on my wife’s 2016 Kia Sedona. Same procedure, except I had to remove the battery and battery try to gain access to the filler bolt. The oil looked like Dr. Pepper at 33k miles. Thanks again

      @koalapeck Před 4 lety

      Great tip! Thank you. I removed the battery based on your comment and it made the fill process so much easier. This only adds about 10 minutes to the whole job, but it saves a lot of frustration dealing with that fill bolt at an angle.

    You are a perfectionist!! Very well-done video, now I feel better about changing my Cadenza`s transmission fluid. But, I will accurately quantify the initial drain volume so I get it real close on refilling. Not hard to do with old 5 liter empties. Thanks for the excellent and very helpful presentation.

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  Před 3 lety +3

      Just wanted to suggest that you do fill it till it spills out of the level port. If the transmission is not correctly fill originally you will be putting back exactly the same (incorrect) amount if you just measure what came out. Example if it was overfilled if you put back what came out you will overfill it again. If it was under filled you and you put back the same amount that came out you will under fill it again. Thank you so much for watching, commenting and the valuable feedback. I appreciate it greatly. All the best. 👍😀

    I sent my car to a normal workshop. What they did was, they poured in the new AT oil just as much as what was drained out. That simple. But watching your video made me realize that they didn't clean up that drain plug. I take note now for the next service. Thank you for the video!

  • @michaelflorentine4284

    This was a wonderful video and it helped me tremendously. I have two comments about my experience:
    1) A 15/16" socket is the same size as a 24mm socket. Fortunately I already had a 15/16" socket.
    2) When doing the final filling of the transmission after you have replaced the fill level plug, I still filled it too quickly even though I thought I was being very careful. Belatedly I learned that every time I hear a "burp", it meant that transmission fluid was burping from the transmission, leaking around the funnel and spilling onto the ground. The only ways to avoid this appears to be either inserting an "air tube" inside the funnel as described above by Jim Mulcahey, or by using a quart bottle to slowly fill - this is easier to control than pouring out of a gallon jug. I also learned I could avoid spilling by pouring it in so slowly that I could actually hear the fluid dripping into the transmission; I would then stop, wait 5-10 seconds, and start another tiny pour.
    Thanks again, Richard for your great work.

      It is crazy how much they charge for basic service items though I have seen transmissions now that have both the fill and drain ports on the bottom of the transmission case (VW). Boy that looks like fun. That temperature gauge is a handy unit to own. I am surprised at how often I use it and not just for automotive purposes alone I also use it in the kitchen too. LOL it's a handy tool. Thanks again Paul for watching and commenting. All the best.

      Richard Lloyd re, the VW transmission, some BMWs are like that, on certain bm autos you have to go through gears and leave it running in drive to do the level at 30/50 Oc, i kid you not, those temp gauges are great in the kitchen.

    This is the best, complete video I've found on kia transmission flushes. Quality camera work too. Anytime the dealership recommends anything on my 2015 optima, I just CZcams/ Google it and do it myself or take it to a different shop and have them do it bc dealership mark up is insane. They wanted 88 dollars to change my cabin air filter. The part was around 11 dollars and the swap out took 60 seconds at most. Dealerships are crazy I just use mine for free oil changes and tire rotations.

    @jimmyaber5920 Před 4 lety +3

    There likely isn't a big difference if you work quick but I would think the fluid level is level ground, engine running. When you stop engine the trans pump is no longer continually pushing fluid into torque converter and keeping it full. The torque converter will drain slowly once engine stops. The rate of drain will vary with temperature of the fluid. The only way you know the torque converter is full and hasn't bled and raised level in sump is to have engine running. The other makes using fill n spill like this one have you run engine as well as all others in the past that have dipsticks.

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  Před 9 měsíci

      El filtro es un filtro interno de malla de acero y no es una pieza de servicio requerida (no recomendado por el fabricante). Tendrías que desmontar la transmisión para reemplazarla. En realidad, solo está ahí para atrapar partículas grandes y metal, lo que de todos modos no debería suceder. A veces, en la fabricación hay algo de metal mecanizado (fresado) que no se obtiene y el filtro atrapa todos esos fragmentos. Gracias por mirar, comentar y las amables palabras. Lo aprecio mucho. ¡Suscríbete, haz clic en la campana y mantente atento! Todo lo mejor.👍😀
      The filter is an internal steel mesh filter and is not a required service part (not recommended by the manufacturer). You would have to disassemble the transmission to replace it. Really it's only there to catch large particles and metal which should really not be happening anyway. Hi Richard. Great video. You covered all the details. Thanks for inspiring me to change out the fluid on my 2012 Tucson. Unfortunately , I’m seeing a leak around the level plug after driving it around. I didn’t remove the level plug completely since there was a steady flow every time I added some fluid to the funnel. I drained out about 4 quarts and poured in about the same with the level plug not completely screwed in. Can i recheck the level without losing too much fluid? What could be causing this?

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  Před 6 lety +2

      Yes you can recheck it. It should only trickle out with the plug removed if it is filled correctly and the car is on level ground. Perhaps you did not tighten it fully or the rubber seal that seats in the hole is damaged or dirty. You can always top up the transmission with fluid after you are done checking. The fill plug on mine was not very tight, you can get it to seat with your hands if they are not too oily or use a 3/8th ratchet. You should feel it lock in. Don't over do it with the ratchet you will destroy the plug (it's made of plastic). Thanks.

    • @koalapeck
      @koalapeck Před 4 lety

      When I did this yesterday, I measured what came out and filled with the same amount. Others might disagree, but I would assume the fill level from the factory was approximately correct. That said, I still drove the vehicle for 15 minutes before parking on level ground and removing the fill level plug to see if fluid would drain out. It came out in a slow trickle, which was good enough for me. If there was zero evidence of fluid draining out, I'd add 500-700 mL as per Richard's excellent video.

    @shawnsingh6321 Před 2 lety +1

    Hi Richard thanks for this video. I’m a bit confused on the amount of fluid. A previous person asked if 1, 5L jug was enough for this and you said yes. The manual says to put about 5L and then you add extra. Do you need about 6 quarts then instead of a 1, 5L jug? For the first refill did you use about 3.5 to 4 litres of the jug before it started coming out of the level plug? Also did you use separate drain pans for this? One for old oil and one for new oil so you could re-use the run off new oil? Thanks in advance.

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  Před 2 lety +2

      The torque converter holds a portion of the transmission fluid and will not be drained in this procedure that is why it takes less than the empty capacity specification to refill the transmission. This is why I don't recommend putting back the same amount you drained instead using the level port to check that you have the right amount of fluid. A certain amount of the old fluid will always be left behind but how much I can only guess at. Thank you so much for commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  Před 2 lety +2

      I can't see it taking the whole 5L so I'm sure you will be safe with that. I recommend changing it every 15 to 20,000 miles depending on how hard you drive it. The main contaminate will be worn clutch plate material. The fluid is synthetic so it is a long lasting chemical and in the transmission it's not even close on the abuse engine oil takes.

      They have an internal steel mess filter that the manufacturer advises should not be replaced. Thank.

      Any replaceable filter should eventually be replaced. Not hard at all. Just need to drop the pan and replace the gasket as well

    Is synthetic fluid in the transmission from the factory?

    • @richardlloydusa
      @richardlloydusa  Před rokem +1

      I'm not sure what they use at the factory. I'm sure what ever it is, it's a good fluid but like any other vehicle fluid it will break down through use and wear. I use the Valvoline on all my vehicles which now includes a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid AWD and it works great in all the vehicles. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

    Hello Richard, I live in Brazil and I have a Kia Sorento 2011 2.4 petrol with automatic gearshift of 6 gears, I am in doubt about the oil exchange of the exchange. please, what is the recommended oil and what is the correct mileage for the exchange? in Brazil Kia does not recommend replacing the exchange oil. Thank you very much in advance. hug

      I would recommend every 30,000 miles or approximately every 60,000 miles and use the same fluid I recommend in the video description. Thanks.

    Excellent video Richard. I just changed mine (2016 Sorrento V6 with 30k, bought used). The fluid was dark. Drained about 4quarts, put a little over 4quarts back in. I plan to change again in 1000 miles. Note - Next time i plan on measuring exactly how much i drained.. wish i had done this with my recent change.
    How is your Sorrento driving now
    ?
    How many changes have you done ?
    Fluid pink again ?

      Iv'e done too many, 5 or 6 six and the fluid is pink. 1000 miles is a good minimum. Certainly will give the transmission a good wash and you will get some good use out of the ATF. After you get it as clean as you can (3 times should do it) stick to 15,000 mile intervals. That's what I do. Took the OCD down a notch. LOL. Oh, also don't go on replacing what you took out. You never know it could have been under-filled or over-filled before you got it. Use the level port and be sure. Thanks

      I drove it for 10 minutes but understand it's summer in Texas but 15 should get you there in most cases. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
