Love the content you guys are putting out. I took a long hiatus from skim boarding (12 yrs) and looking to get back into it again. Blair explains everything about skim boarding so it is easy to understand. If they had videos like these and the tutorials think I would've progressed more. Thanks 🙏 and keep pumping out great content!

I don't think it matters that much with a woody as it's more flat land skimming, when it comes to waves you need the surface area. I could be wrong, either way still get a lot of fun out of it 👍

Good beginner start vid. Ya gotta address rocker "and" shape working together next. 3 boards, one flat, one banana and one flat with big nose rocker are gonna be completely different boards witht he same shape/length. I prefer a flat board with lots of nose rocker, normal length, kinda wide pin tail, but not round. Good for long distance connection, long liners, slow mushy siders and when i put my rear foot back super huge onshore mashers. Unless manufacturers have an adjustable table, they don't like to make them.....lol

I can second your comment about wooden boards hurting A LOT when they hit you.
I remember wiping out and not knowing where my Victory board was. All of a sudden a large, fast wave broke and my wooden skim board dug ran right into my right knee. Thinking it was a bad bruise ended up being a large gash. I was still boarding for 30 more minutes thinking it was a bruise. I didn’t even know I had the cut until I was drying up and a waterfall of blood ran down my leg.

My family goes to the ocean every year and I always loved skim boards because I watched Laguna Beach growing up, so in 2015 my parents surprised me with a skimboard. When they handed it to me, I did NOT expect it to be that heavy because I had literally just finished boogie boarding second before and that’s where my mindset was, so I was pretty surprised. It’s a thick wooden board so I was actually pretty scared to try it out because I was afraid of really hurting myself. I’ve just been skimming the sand these passed few years and I’ve actually gotten pretty good but I’m still afraid to do anything crazy.

And second question, would you rather recommend getting separate boards for my son and myself, or can we start of together with a board that would be useful to me as an adult, however isn‘t too heavy for him to carry and drop? Thanks and keep up the great content.

I’m trying to determine if I should get the standard shape EX0 or the Dude Cruise shape. I’m looking at the 48 inch version’s, as that hits right at my sternum / nipple line. I am 5’5” and my weight fluctuates between 135lbs. - 150lbs. I am a beginner and will only be using the board about 4 to 6 times a year. I live in Orlando Florida so when I go to the beach it’s normally either Cocoa Beach or New Smyrna Beach (Florida east coast). The wave conditions very greatly, sometimes it’s calm other times it’s rough and choppy. Sometimes the waves are small other times they are somewhat large. As much as I want the board to be versatile I also don’t want to get discouraged learning, and want to be able to enjoy it if I don’t progress much. The standard EX0 is 5/8 in thickness with a point tail, and the Dude Cruise is a 3/4 thickness that tapers down to a 5/8, The Dude Cruise has a fishtail and a wider nose. Since I’m a beginner I want something that I’m going to be able to enjoy learning on and using under multiple conditions. Which one should I go with? Based on my skill level, and the Beaches I typically go to.

Nice tutorial. I like the focus on height, which we are the same, but I'm at least 60 lbs heavier than you, what else do I need to know?

Go with a dude cruise shape. They are meant for heavier people and they are wider

Looking for a board for my son who is 5’8” and 140 pounds but still growing.
He’s been using a thin wooden board to learn just exactly what you said not to do but we had already picked up a used one to see if he was going to like it.
Well he really likes it so we’re looking to upgrade.
We live in NJ and frequent Ocean City beaches where the waves are hit or miss.
Our sand is quite different than the west coast beaches so I was wondering if that makes a difference in the board we would need to get.
I like the looks of the EXO boards but was wondering if the EX2 is worth the stretch in price.
Seems like the ZAP board is more popular around here but I’m really interested in the Exile brand.
Please let me know your opinion on the two boards.
Also is there a retailer in NJ?
    Thank you

I was learning just this week, and could only afford a plywood $50 skim board that was from 130 pounds to 160, and was bummed out that I couldn’t do a ton of little waves or anything.
