The Queen's passing is sad on its own merits but it's especially poignant that we've lost her & Gorbachev in the space of few days; both were political & diplomatic giants who helped peacefully transition huge geopolitical entities through contraction & loss of influence; both being replaced by relative pygmies.

Indeed she was. Rest in Peace. She was a rock for many decades, known to the world, of many generations. It is especially distressing, in light of the barage of related bad news of today.

The commonwealth was not new. Its character changed with the independence of the colonies during the 50s, 60s and 70s. Its spirit remained tied to the idea of fealty to the former empire , which provided the foundation for continous power brokering by the British, both Crown and the state working hand in hand.

Only that pesky language meaning that we share vast amounts of culture whether you admit it or not. And that common law system.
