Photogrammetry is the most accessible 3D scanning method to use with a smartphone as it simply requires any phone that can capture images. The accompanying software can leverage complex measuring algorithms to stitch the photographs together, outputting a 3D model.
We recommend using the KIRI Engine app for 3D scanning with your smartphone. KIRI Engine is available for both iPhone and Android phones.
KIRI Engine uses cloud computing to process your 3D scan. Cloud computing will provide better results while also allowing you to continue to 3D scan additional objects. This is also the only smartphone photogrammetry app that we’ve found to consistently produced better results than Lidar 3D scanning with an iPad Pro.

Great summary for newbies man. Good job. The field is about to really begin to incorporate now that infrastructure is here.
Great tutorial, thanks! 😀
Thanks a bunch. Been needing a budget scanner.
Excelente tutorial!!!
To make this process much quicker you could take a video and convert it to a PNG sequence using online software!
Make sure you use a pro app to record the video because you Will want to record at a higher Sutter speed to avoid any type of motionblur.
Awesome and amazing !
To be honest, I have tried with no hope, and after taking only the 70 pictures that let was so incredible how it works! it is the first time in years that finally got a decent 3d scanned object (even I done doing the half of recommendations cos, as I mention, I had no hope, but it is amazing, definitely, this have a promisoring future! thanks alot Kevin!
Glad to hear that, Tony! It is quite amazing how well the results are with a limited amount of photos (and just a smartphone camera vs high end). Cheers!
Great video! :)
A project using this tech has been on my mind for a while. I'm so glad i found this channel!
Glad to hear that. Let me know how it goes :)
Thanks for introducing me to Kiri engine!
Let me know how your 3D scans turn out! :)

@@hillfortherstudios2757 Sorry to hear that. Did you try emailing them here? contact@kiri-innov.com
They were very responsive when I talked to them (a month ago).
KIRI invitation code please ?

Great job man
Please what about the dimensions for box exemple, is correct or need correction
amazing explaining skills man !! thanks a lot
Thanks for watching, Mohd!
Thank you.

Excellent.
thanks a lot
Have you considered using a QRcode looking mat under the object, to use in replacement of the background relative positioning data. Or using some more precise 3d printed models next to the object for 3d scaling, instead of the tube as a 2d scale. Great job! I'll share any results that come from my experimentation!
QR code is interesting idea! I've used a cutting matt with a 1 cm grid, which has worked well. Would love to see the results after you experiment 🙂
@@ProductDesignOnline ok thx!
@@ProductDesignOnline Qlone 3d scanning app is using that kind of patterned mat to place under the model and reference the pictures
Great tutorial 🎉
Thank you! Cheers!
Very informative, as alway.
How do i import the texture map into Fusion 360? I loaded the obj file, but when i change visual style to Shaded, it does not have the original texture, it's just neon green. (absolute newbie fyi)
I tried the same, however i see no colour once importing my .obj into fusion 360. is there any adjustments you have to make in order to see colours? I can switch on or off the mesh, however the surface staysy a uniform blueish-gray colour, i.e. colours dont get exported from kiri (or not imported by fusion).
Thanks!
Thanks for your support!
Hi any tips on how to scan something like the skull that does not have a flat bottom and detail at the bottom?
Hi thank you for the tutorial. I am new to this is it possible to rig and animate this model in blender after exporting?
Could you send more pitures of the statue, please? Just for praticing?
Hi, thanks a lot for the good info! Could you give some insight on the accuracy of this method as well as the lidar method with iPhone? I'm curious about the potential applications
Also, do you have an opinion which tech will prevail in future phones? It's interesting that android and iPhone has split paths; both looking to capitalize on an enormous market in industry. For example, engineers having an accurate 3D scanner in their pocket. That thought is incredible to me.
@@jdb939 I think this is one of those technologies where both will be prevailant until a 3rd option beats them. Mainly, because each 3D scanning method works better/worse with different types of scanning. I would say that Lidar is still 'worse' in terms of accuracy, when using the cheaper Lidar hardware (phones, iPad) vs the commercial level $40K ones.

hello , any tips to scan a 3d object on the web itself? i saw the kiri engine youtube chanel , they scanned Kratos in the computer itself , i failed multiple times scanning a object on the internet itself.!
It would be nice if you could do a tutorial with open source software. Or does somebody have a link to a good one?
nah bro, just torrent autodesk. (theoretically of course..)
Hi Kevin, thanks for the tips.. First try, and I got a decent result. But do you have a solution for the „texture problem“. As some before me stated, I am not able do get the texture.jpg imported. Thank you for your help. Christian
hey, same here. any answers?
how do you convert this to a solid object ?? nice video :)
See 6:40
Is it possible to scan a hollow object? How would that be done? I'm kind of new at this.
It really depends on the objects. If the opening is large enough to capture photos then there's a good chance you can get good results. What will be key is getting enough outside/background information in the photos as well. So, for example, if you wanted to scan something like a bucket or an object with an opening on the top, then it would work pretty well. On the flip side, if you want to scan something such as a sea shell, then you likely won't be a me to capture the inside well enough (depending on the size of the shell).
Thanks for this vid. Say, I see you have a dog in one example. Is the service fairly tolerant of animal subjects (including human) where small subject motions are bound to occur during photography?
Also, is there a cost to the Kiri processing?
Thanks, Kurt. In general, with photogrammetry you'll get the best results when the object is perfectly still. The challenge with any human or animal 3D scans is if they move too much then you'll likely have a weird area or a hole in the model. That's actually why I scanned my dog while he was chilling in his bean bag at night.. less chance of him moving. That said, KIRI does work pretty well with human/animal scans compared to others ive tried.
KIRI has a freemium model. It's free to scan and free to process unlimited models. They have a "Pro" plan that offers extra high quality and some other features.
So I leave the object stationary and take tons of pictures from all angles above, below, and around?
That's correct! The background information is part of what helps the 2D photos get turned into 3D at the right scale. If you rotate the object it won't work very well because it won't have as much of that background data that overlaps.
are all these options you use on Fusion 360 available on the hobby version?
Everything show in the mesh video - yes. Some of the convert STL (mesh) videos I have demo the Prismatic feature which is now only on the commercial license of Fusion 360.
Maybe 3D print a set of axis arrows and place near the object? You get both dimension and orientation from them.
Neat idea - thanks! :)
Hi sir, I am using Iphone 13 and 3D Scanner App TM to scan a rock core which is size is about 1.3 m x 1.3 m. When I import the cloud data in Analist software, I found the average distance between one cloud point to the nearest cloud point is about 15 mm. I am not able to do any setting using the 3D scanner app TM. Q1. Do you know how to increase the density of the could point or in other word decrease the spacing between cloud data ? Q2. Did you notice any difference in 3D scanning using Iphone 13 and Iphone 13 Pro ?
Thank you.
maybe move close to the object?
I am really excited to trythis! Other apps delivered sub par results.....above par? Poopy results anyways!
I didn't want to name shame all "bad" apps. Good thing to check is if they process on your phone. If they do, likely won't be able to produce as good of results.
@@ProductDesignOnline Gotcha! This will be really useful. I am glad you dont need a $10,000 scanner anymore. I am totally for paying a decent amount of money for a decent product, but I struggled to find a market for scanni g under that price range.
@@hillfortherstudios2757 very true! To be honest, this app has worked better than some $5,000 plus scanners I've used in the past. IMO, the software and ability to use cloud computing, has finally caught up with the hardware.
That said some of the high-end scanners still have a leg up with precise parts or very large models.
can you trie to make a phone case for the phone oppo a53 because i trie it a billion times and it still not woring please make it in fusion 360 thank you

Kevin, How did you get the texture to show up in fusion. I have been trying to do this forever!!!!!!
How are you opening/inserting the OBJ file? Whenever you go to Insert (dropdown menu)> Insert Mesh > select your OBJ file. It should show the texture map by default.
Let me know if that's not the case with that workflow. If so, it must be a setting that was turned off. :)
@@ProductDesignOnline Thanks for this amazing video. I have the same issue - can't view the texture in F360. There must be a way to display the jpg file around the mesh object - because it's in Your tutorial ;). Maybe there is a setting you changed, because by default I am getting just a pinkish body, no bitmap.
@@kamilabiaozynska554 Very strange...just tested on my end again and I'm seeing the same thing. I just reached out to the Fusion 360 team to see if I can get an answer. Hopefully, it's a bug and not intentionally removed. Will keep you posted :)
@@ProductDesignOnline or it's getting extensionized ;)
I got a question. If I were to cnc machine the object to reality will it come the same size with the official object?
The scans won’t be close to finish quality, but sizing is done in a slicing app, not in an app like this.
How is the processing actually done? Are ALL the photos uploaded to the cloud and then processed and a 3D object send back? Or is it done locally on the phone and the cloud is just doing some final tweaks?
Can I scan my friend with this?
Yes, it works pretty well on humans if they stand still.
Am i able to edit the models in other softwares like mastercam?
My understanding is Mastercam is for toolpath setup and doesn't have much in terms of editing the source mesh file. However, you can edit the mesh in Blender, Meshmixer, Fusion (limited mesh capabilities) and many other mesh based modelers.
Is that Caligula?
let’s say i care about the under side of the object. how do i do a 3d scan including the underside?
I'm assuming you mean all 360 degrees and not just the underside? Generally, the approach would be to flip the model around and capture two scans, then merge them together. The key is to have some registration markings on it that help you align/scale things in the software. That said, this method is better suited for Lidar or point cloud scanning vs photogrammetry.
Qual software você utilizou para fazer a máscara?
Fusion360
Why not just use Blender to manipulate the model?
You think will work with a human scan or just face scan?
It does work well on humans as long as they stand as still as possible/don't move too much or the surrounding objects will no longer be aligned.
how do you use the seperate tool
to remove unwanted objects .
i am not able to follow your example
thanks
I recommend Autodesk Meshmixer for most clean up work/free tool. I don't have a tutorial on it myself, but the learning curve is much easier than Fusion.
can i scan a rc plane ? what's the min resolution?
You could. The 'resolution' really depends on how many photos you take. The app also creates a high poly and low poly file.
Is it possible in KIRI to scan a person and 3d print them?
Yes! You can. Just have to make sure the person stays as still as possible :)
@@ProductDesignOnline Thank you very much!!!! Also, is there a way to cut out certain part of the scan as well. Like if I wanted to print off just the head or an arm? And if so, what do you recommend I do that in?
@@cable8929 yes! I show how to do that in Fusion 360 at the end of this video. You can use "Plane Cut" tool to do so :)
@@ProductDesignOnline Thank you very much!! I appreciate all of what your doing.
The problem with scanning these days is that it can't get the whole object into one single mesh file u still have to tweak it in software.. 😳.. I don't like uploading to the cloud though.. 😳. I'll save my meshes in my cave... 😁
Is there a totally free 3D scan app? One that you dont need to sign in, no payment after 5 scans, the rear camera works too and works with out lidar ? Im sure there is many people that wants to know this.
I've been looking recently too. I haven't seen anything totally free yet.

Still, there could be a better app than this one... 😳. I'll download it anyways, thanks... Thanks, BTW.. 😁👍
Can I import my model into blender and edit it?
Yes! Can export as a mesh to open in any CAD program that accepts STL/OBJ
Hey Kevin, I’m about to sign up with KIRI. Did you have an invitation code?
Nope, I don't do that as I like to promote only products I already use or trust :)
@@ProductDesignOnline so you don’t use KIRI anymore? I’m not asking for a discount. The invitation code would give you more free exports. What do you use now for scanning your 3d objects with your phone?
@@TechnicalTerry apolgoies, I misunderstood you. Link: www.kiriengine.app/share/Invitation?code=9NJIJT
Unfortunately , this is not much help to me . There was no mention on how to subtract or add details in order to make changes to a particular model to make a different model , case in point , a scale locomotive shell . I want to take an Athearn SW7 shell , scan it , make a few changes through an editer , and have a printed SW1 , or an NW2 , or an SW8 , or even an SW1200RS with dynamic brakes and have it directly fit the Athearn underframe with no fuss or modification required .
There must be a way to turn the scan into a 3D mesh model that can then be modified, then printed. I’m wanting to scan die cast cars, be able to make them hollow, with separate pieces. Like a base, axles and wheels. There are different modeling software out there, some open source, but all seem to have steep learning curves.
I can't install kiri engine :(
Can you import it into blender?
Yes, the KIRI Engine app can export OBJ, FBX, STL, GLB, GLTF, USDZ, PLY, and XYZ formats.
This can be converted into STL file
Yes! At the moment, the KIRI app only includes OBJ, which is essentially and STL file + the texture/color map of the scan. You could open it in Fusion 360 and re-export as STL.
This is a tutorial, not a run down of free 3D Scanning apps for your phone.
This gets a rating of 2 😮

Should the pictures stay "Queuing" for hours? It has been over 4 hours hours and they still have not uploaded yet.
Talked with the folks at KIRI. They're experiencing some longer processing times due to amount of people using it.
Normally, it's 5-15 mins for large files (200 photos).
Did yours end up finishing, Jerry?
@@ProductDesignOnline Yes it did but I have a lot of learning to get this to represent anything like my model. I'll get there.
@@jerryschmoyer8329 What sort of object are you scanning?
@@ProductDesignOnline I am trying to scan a toy car. I don't think I have the surface finish and background correct. I have way to many things in the background. I need to find a place with little background. That is harder than it sounds, especially with good equal lighting. My car is only 2"x1.25"x.5".
Thanks for this very useful tutorial.
Unfortunately the Kiri app does not comply with European privacy laws.
My privacy is more important than a free app.
What if your target is the size of a car?
A lidar scanner would be better for something that large. Photogrammetry of this nature (cell phone) is not good at really large objects.

Title is misleading. You get 3D model not with "phone" (it's the LEAST significant part), but CLOUD SERVICE.
Your phone has camera, the app, the WiFi antenna, the Internet connection, the storage, the ui and the screen needed for you to take the picture. So you use your phone for taking and uploading the picture.
I had on Samsung S7 edge a free lens that i could 3D scan an object. That was free. They terminated that amazing option and sharks are making money on something that was once free... welcome to the free world
Can't upload photos to Kiri unless you pay 9.99. Kiri is a lure scam. There is no desktop app, only a link for the phone. Install on your phone and upload is disabled unless you pay 9.99 a month. If you complain to Kiri they gaslight you and claim you are wrong and use a lot of weasel words to cover their fake free lure to subscribe scam.
I'm sorry to hear that. When I made this video, they offered a fully featured free version, you were just limited to how many you could do each month.
I haven't had a need for it for several months since I now have some expensive structure scanners. Are you saying Kiri now doesn't allow free at all?
