    Hi,
    Great demo, similar to one I like to do in my classes but with hot water. In your explanation about oxygen, you are forgetting that a combustion reaction also releases carbon dioxide, molecule for molecule, as oxygen is consumed. The CO2 exerts the same pressure as the O2 it replaces. The effect is purely due to air expansion.

    • @matthewmartino6873
      @matthewmartino6873 Před 4 lety +1

      Not to mention water vapor. You in fact have more moles of gases after than before. It's all about the expansion. You can see the water vapor that is initially invisible condense... like a cloud... especially when the bigger balloon enters the bottle.

    • @TT-chemical.engineering
      @TT-chemical.engineering Před rokem

      exactly, for every 1mol of O2 u release 1,4~1,7 mol of CO2 and HOH, if u are burning something like a hidrocarbon, such as methane and propane, that does not have oxyygen IN its molecules (like ethanol, or a glicose polymer, like celulose - "paper"). If u burn glicose, is 1:2 (6 HOH and 6 CO2 for every 6 O2); The hot air that exits is then rich in CO2 and poor in O2, the air left in the bottle will be poor (or almost none) in O2, and rich in N2, CO2 and water vapor.
      It is indeed about expansion; the heat air of the combustion increses the pressure till it pushes the ballon up, making it bounce, as it exits the bottle. Then, as the air inside the bottles "shrinks" because of condensation of water vapor and the deacrese in temperature, it creates a vaccum (since the ballon seals the bottle as it is being pulled in) and the ballon is sucked in.

    But doesn't air pressure increase with heat? How does the fire in the bottle (which I imagine is increasing the air pressure) allow now the outside air (which now in theory is a lower pressure) to push it down? Unless the increased pressure in the bottle is escaping outside around the balloon and thus at that point leaves no or less air inside the bottle for atmosphere pressure to push the balloon in?

    • @jaylensung7332
      @jaylensung7332 Před 6 lety +1

      That's cuz fire needs oxygen to burn, and air has oxygen. When u burn something it means oxygen is depleting and it will lower the air pressure. That's the reason why outside the bottle's air pressure will push down the balloon inside.

    • @TT-chemical.engineering
      @TT-chemical.engineering Před rokem

    Thanks for the experiment! I'm trying to demo it myself at home and am actually having problems with the balloon not going into the bottle all the way. I'm using a glass Starbucks coffee bottle, a regular balloon filled with water to the size of an egg and a piece of paper similar in size and thickness to a Post It note. I tried putting both the match and the paper into the bottle and that seems to let the balloon go in a little further, but I haven't yet got the balloon in all the way. Anyone happen to know what the problem is? My guess is that the paper needs to burn a little longer for more oxygen to be used up...? Thanks for the help!

      Hello Katherine.....Seems like you are doing everything correctly. One suggestion. Before you light the paper, make sure the inside portion of the bottle mouth is wet. Sometimes the balloon gets stuck as it goes into the bottle. Good luck and thanks for using our channel FunScienceDemos.
