The emptiness of this song, and the whole album really, is what makes it feel so ghostly and emotional.... Listen to it when you miss someone who feels far away, and it clicks. It's stories from a vast depth
When I first heard it, I was still together with my ex. I appreciated the more upbeat Magic and A Sky Full of Stars. It wasn't until a year or so after we broke up that I really had an appreciation for the rest of the songs. They really clicked, like you said.
SO TRUE. I didn't think much of this album at first, but a couple of years later when I lost somebody I loved, it was like every song spoke directly to me. Very moving.
The song is about isolation. A relationship which has drowned hence the song title “Oceans” Something I find entirely clever is the sonar sound throughout the entire track. Sonar is a sound that gets emitted for detection of other objects under water. With sonar, if another object is detected the sound bounces back. No sound is detected in this track. The first line “wait for you call love, the call never came” Maybe it’s about the demise of a relationship. Before it was one sided. He was selfish. “I’m ready for it all love, I’m ready for a pain” he’s ready for love and to be serious but it’s too late. She built a wall to protect and distance herself. “Behind the walls love; I’m trying to change” that sonar sound (his call for love) still doesn’t penetrate the walls she built. The lines “Meet under sun/meet me in blue sky” suggests of a time their love wasn’t underwater (drowned) “Meet me again,in the rain” his desire to emerge from this water, before things got so bad, he’s willing to go back to a time where their love was bad but not completely drowned and submersed. “You have to find yourself alone in this world” The entire album is a story. Listen to it carefully from beginning to end. I prefer the live version. The raw emotion is alive and well while being performed.
Abolfazl Nasseri dont feel bad. Im in America and Ive loved them since 2000 and havent seen them in concert either. I will before I die though. No matter how old.
Its been 20 years since that etheral conversation we had. We even held hands and blessed "us" with a kiss. And 20 years ago...I stepped out of your car; gave a quick smile and a wave, and boarded a plane to another life. All great songs have endings...ours was special. We both love music and we knew that our song had a decade of memory. and we could play it anytime. A distant look with a half smile?...Its On....;-) This is who & what I think of as Chris sings this song. I'm drawn back to this song over and over..its a "perfect" song in the huge realm of music...and that is rare for me to say.
I think the ping in the drum could possibly be there to represent a sonar ping from a ship, thus the title Oceans, if so that is such a great idea and this song is hauntingly beautiful
wait for your callin' the call never came ready to fallin ready to claim I'm ready for it all now I'm ready for the change meet under the sun now meet me again in the rain in the rain behind the walls now I'm tryin a change I'm ready for it all now I'm ready for the pain so meet under blue skies meet me again in the rain in the rain in the rain in the rain you've got to find yourself alone in this world you've got to find yourself alone in this world THANK YOU ; COLDPLAY ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥
00lifeisforliving00 Is anyone else getting slightly sick of hearing "Magic is Crap" "A Sky Full Of Stars is Crap" and "Princess of China is Crap"? I mean people have been railing on POC, mostly because Rihanna was in it, not because it was bad. And if a band is going to survive in the mainstream world Coldplay has somewhat accidentally launched itself into, they need to change over time. And if you can't get over yourself enough to do that, then you aren't a true fan. A true fan would think about what is best for the band, not best for themselves. A band like Coldplay is not like Katy Perry or anybody else mainstream. They are not here to serve YOUR musical tastes. There are here to create music. It just so happens the music they created made it big. I wish they were still mainly an Alternative band an no one had heard of them so that we could get a way from all the selfish fucking haters.
Add another item on my bucket list...as the house becomes empty of those we adore, Martin shares the last bottle we drink as he pours. Your best one Chris...let it breath! ;-)

Wow. What a way to explain it. Following him so many years I knew Ghost stories was about him getting over his failed marriage but never heard such an amezing explanation of a song it fits perfectly with what the album is about Amezing ❤️
This is the most amazing song I've heard in like a year. Those ghosty yet surreal chords reminds me of the "Sparks" EP. Sparks, See You Soon, and Careful Where You Stand, goosebumps again. Thank you CP.
Some of ''sparks'' and ''we never change'' and ''warning sign'' ... fantastic. Mylo Xyloto was a bit mainstream but Coldplay is going back to the roots ! I'm more than happy ! Cheers !
When i listen this song come to my mind songs like: We never change, Spies, Careful where you stand, For you, I Bloom Blaum and more. I was waiting a long time that Coldplay were to do something like this.
It's really good to see all those positive comments here. When Atlas came out, a lot of people weren't happy cause they said it was commercial music. Now that I read that people love all these new songs.. well it makes my heart melt. I've always loved Coldplay, I went to 7 concerts of theirs, one better than the other. They have always played amazing music, and everytime I hear their songs I feel the same as I was feeling when I gave my hand to Chris on the stage. I am so happy, because Coldplay are happy and because the fans are too. So thank you, even if I have no power to you or to them. Thanks a lot. Coldplay will never die.
I've been a Coldplay fan ever since I was in 3rd grade! (I'm 18 now) Their first song I ever heard by them was Speed of Sound because it came everyone morning in every music video on VH1 or MTV and even since then, Coldplay cease to amaze me every time I hear them. No matter what album or what song I hear from them, it's music to my ears!
I know it's out of subject, I love the song! So much it reminds me of Parachutes too! :) and I love that record! But I just kinda freaked out because of the scar at Chris's neck...
Here it is a month later...I hear it again... and the emotion it evokes takes me back to my soulmate at UT in Austin... Greg, our ten years together, the late night music playing with R Ragston (aka BB King), the drummer who "lived" in his lil' storgae unit stuffed with percussion equipment that "Rush" drummer would have envied! ;-) Stevie (Ray Vaughn) and his borrowing a guitar to play "Lenny" for the first time at Antones on Guadalupe St.... Chris, you bring back those memories, and tears of sadness and JOY.... You hooked me w/ "Clocks"...I had to search madly to find out who play THAT SONG...then "Yellow" and a deaf friend signing and dancing to it! More please....you bring solstice to this one lil' insignificant soul across the mud puddle. And GChildress - were not 70 y.o. yet (that promise to meet back up on a park bench and discuss if we got what we wanted out of life)-- this ones for you...I'll save it for then and I will PLAY IT REALLY LOUD. My "Harrison Ford" haha as your brokers called ya.. thinking of ya. Thanks Chris..just luv "Martin"s (i.e guitars)!
I've been waiting for Coldplay to go back to their roots, the acoustic and chill vibe they had in parachutes. When magic and sky full of stars came out I was soooo skeptical , but glad the rest of the album pulled thro.
Absolutely love it, beautifully haunting!!.....Johnny's keyboards and Guy's bass at the end gives a stunningly beautiful rich finish to the song. I really love the way Coldplay are using more keyboards now too :-)
Even if you don't like their songs the first time you hear it, their songs tend to grow on you as time proceeds. This is because somehow their songs fix into your idea and meaning of life. You never cease to impress me Coldplay! keep the tracks rolling!!

This is such a crazy great and sad song!!! It's like almost falling completely in love and being ready... but it doesn't happen... but still he hopes it will. Delivered and executed in a very hopeless Chris Martin fashion. That melody.
I hated Magic and Midnight at first, but they grew on me. Another's Arms and Oceans I love from the beginning. I went from being nervous to very excited about this new album. This song is Parachutes-like, and I love it!
I loved Midnight, but I wasn't a giant fan of Magic, and the song hasn't grown a lot on me. I do like it though. I just got burnt out on songs like Charlie Brown and the others from Mylo Xyloto.
Some songs on Mylo Xyloto I really like, but some like Paradise were overproduced. Up With the Birds, Major Minus, & Princess of China were the best ones off their last album. Charlie Brown was good, but Magic was a little too similar.
Coldplay's low key tone throughout Ghost Stories is symbolic of a life shift for Chris and his unpartnering with GP...so it goes...he once said he felt like he had one the Lottery, today that seems so far in the past...he's growing as a man and father...
Its right what a person commented on another live performance of the new album, that when live throws hard times at you, you throw yourself into what you love doing best. I can actually believe that watching him sing this song as you can hear the pain in his voice. What with the split from his children and ex-wife, I actually think this song came from his heart, truly............EXCELLENT!!
Everything about this band screams IDEAL. They are the real deal. Their lyrics full of such great reality and emotion. So much that everyone who listens can relate in a way best suiting them. AWESOME AWESOME group! One of the best.
Now this is the Coldplay I used to love back in the day (haunting vocals, ethereal music,etc...) as opposed to that band masquerading as them for the last couple of years. This tune is like a cross between Spies and Politik
As a huge Coldplay fan I feel this song is horrifically underrated
This is a top 5 Coldplay song for sure.. it just never got the love it deserved
The emptiness of this song, and the whole album really, is what makes it feel so ghostly and emotional.... Listen to it when you miss someone who feels far away, and it clicks. It's stories from a vast depth
Very true
excited to finally

Whenever I listen to this song I always remember this comment and it give it so much meaning.
Wow! So profound. I'm sure Chris didn't even know that this is what he meant Lol.
@@lubondochilekwa he definitely knows what his masterpiece is all about, do check out his interview with Zane Lowe for Ghost Stories
It definitely made more sense after reading your comment :)
such a great analysis. thank you man
ghost stories is and might forever be the most amazing and impactful album in my life
Me too.
Coldplay just gets better and better... Literally a band that can stand the test of time. Love Coldplay.
So true, exactly my opinion too
this song is soooo parachute's style i love it
Hey I was thinking exactly the same. Full circle eh. this is amazing.
Royal Engineer I hope they go back to the ever loved parachutes style. By far my coming of age anthem!
David Philp Totally agree
Yah it does have that Parachute's style
this song just reminds me of the album!
Chris Martin is an angel on earth
I don't know, but this song always makes me think of a lonely whale weeping in a serene and melancholic sea, I love it
LIKE THE FUCKING OLD TIMES, I'M IN LOVE WITH THIS SONG
The rawness of Chris' voice and the whole song make this along with O the best songs on Ghost Stories. They are just pure perfection.....
Again amazing!!!
chris martin is like wine because the years pass and gets better♥
but... I want to see him young when I'll go to coldplay concert though I'm from iran and I can't go to their concert :(
hevaa nita YOU ARE SO RIGHT!
hevaa nita wow... so you're assuming mylo xyloto was better than... for example Rush of Blood to the head? :
Abolfazl Nasseri dont feel bad. Im in America and Ive loved them since 2000 and havent seen them in concert either. I will before I die though. No matter how old.
I feel like I'm on the shore of Parachutes, watching as the boys sail home, waiting in anticipation for all the stories they have to tell.
Well said!
yeiih, feeling the same! :)
I love how their sound is always changing but on each album they touch back on their roots with a song like this :)
Its been 20 years since that etheral conversation we had. We even held hands and blessed "us" with a kiss. Of course, thats it! Actually obvious when you think about it. Now I love it even more
Of course, thats it! Actually obvious when you think about it. Now I love it even more
wow
wow never thought of that!
Great shout
I prefer this version to the studio version. So much deeper, it feels
reminds me so much of parachutes, this is the Coldplay I fell in love with!
truth:)
wait for your callin'
the call never came
ready to fallin
ready to claim
I'm ready for it all now
I'm ready for the change
meet under the sun now
meet me again
in the rain
in the rain
behind the walls now
I'm tryin a change
I'm ready for it all now
I'm ready for the pain
so meet under blue skies
meet me again
in the rain
in the rain
in the rain
in the rain
you've got to find yourself alone in this world
you've got to find yourself alone in this world
THANK YOU ; COLDPLAY ♥ I LOVE YOU ♥
This song absolutely blew me away. Coldplay have entered the realm of all-time greats.
Is nobody going to point out that adorable 'the end'? I just melt every time...
True
Ghost Stories keeps getting better & better with every little release.
this reminds me of the good ol times of yellow and shiver and careful where you stand... aaahhh
I love this live version better then the studio one!
+Sophia Whitecross Kinda agree, both are great!
I loved how he ended with "the end." This song is amazing. As always, Coldplay's music never stops being truly amazing :)
I just keep replaying this song over and over. I can only imagine it live in concert. Love you, Coldplay.
Studio quality vocals going on here folks. Flawless.
I know I post this on every new Coldplay song but it is true. They never disappoint me with their new releases! NEVER!
thats beacause you are a fan...
PaulSlax So freakin what
William Maxwell man you are a true fan
Even when Princess of china came out?

pure proof that coldplay has never and will never use autotune to "perfect" their songs.
Add another item on my bucket list...as the house becomes empty of those we adore, Martin shares the last bottle we drink as he pours. Your best one Chris...let it breath! ;-)
I am sorry for your separation ;( sorry for the pain I can hear from your voice..
Reminiscent of the old Coldplay, this is brilliant. Hopefully the newer Coldplay fans can still appreciate it.
they'd be fools not to.
The vintage Coldplay is back!
Woahhhh, I haven't been this impressed with Coldplay in a long time. This was hypnotic.
Spies+42= Oceans. LOVE ITTTTT
And I thought I'm the only one who heard 42 in this song.
I don't it feel like Spies nor 42.
can def hear Spies...This is probably my favorite song off Ghost Stories
Daniel Herrera Right? Something something...
I don't hear 42.
I'm happy they didn't lose this aspect of their music ... Pure , calm , simple ... This is poetry. Thank you Chris , you're inspiring ...
This is a mixture of their old and new stuff
My favorite Coldaplay album is parachutes, but ghost stories is a very close second. So many great songs on the album just like this song.
The song is about isolation. The song is titled “Oceans”. Something to note that I find entirely clever is the sonar sound through the entire track. sonar is a sound emitted for detection of other objects under water. No sound is detected in this track. this song reminds me a lot to careful where you stand. go listen to it, specially by the end
Oceans is such a precious jewel on Ghost Stories
Some of ''sparks'' and ''we never change'' and ''warning sign'' ... fantastic. Mylo Xyloto was a bit mainstream but Coldplay is going back to the roots ! I'm more than happy ! Cheers !
sick chords
When i listen this song come to my mind songs like: We never change, Spies, Careful where you stand, For you, I Bloom Blaum and more. I was waiting a long time that Coldplay were to do something like this.
All true Coldplayers should LOVE this song. Same style as Parachutes, aka the album that started them all... without parachutes there is no Coldplay!
Back to old school style Coldplay. Pleasure.
It's really good to see all those positive comments here.

I can spend my whole night watching coldplay live performances...
Sounds like Coldplay feat. Radiohead. This Track grows like magic and midnight.
I've been a Coldplay fan ever since I was in 3rd grade! WOW, reminds me of parachutes
Best Coldplay song since their second album.
This song is so beautiful! It's X&Y all over again and i'm glad it is.
At first, all people saying this is the least Coldplay song, but now, old Coldplay fans appear and all are saying this is sooooo Coldplay
Love this atlaseeee feel :) +the slide guitar
I'm still unsure how I feel regarding 'Ghost Stories' but this track is simply stunning. Best song on the album!
Finally, a taste of the original coldplay, such a nostalgic tone to this song :')
The Coldplay of the old are back!!! :*
Heard "Oceans" for the first time at the Matinee Beacon Theater NYC show, and it blew me away. This is such a great, great tune.
This song is a return to roots Coldplay!! Great Album
coldplay equals life
What a voice
It sounds just like sparks ... Old coldplay! Excellent
I've been waiting for Coldplay to go back to their roots, the acoustic and chill vibe they had in parachutes. When magic and sky full of stars came out I was soooo skeptical , but glad the rest of the album pulled thro.
never knew this Coldplay would be back from the good old days of Parachutes and the Blue Room. Kudos to them!
WTF Its a brand new song and i already love it!
Haunting, heartbreaking, heavenly.
I really like this kind of beeping-drum because it really feels like it comes from the ocean!! This song is great! :)
reminds me of their Parachute era. Spies! 'Ghost Stories' is looking very solid!
Absolutely love it, beautifully haunting!!.....Johnny's keyboards and Guy's bass at the end gives a stunningly beautiful rich finish to the song. I really love the way Coldplay are using more keyboards now too :-)
I love it so much! :)
Even if you don't like their songs the first time you hear it, their songs tend to grow on you as time proceeds. This is because somehow their songs fix into your idea and meaning of life. You never cease to impress me Coldplay! keep the tracks rolling!!
Between Magic, Midnight and this one, Oceans, we can be sure this album will be a great one! ove Coldplay!
BBC Radio 1 continues to rock my world!
Coldplay is back!!!!!
Thank you for giving us some of the old alternative sound.
My new anthem... This album will be my new audible bible. Love this new era.
Chris Martin is god. This whole album is gonna be great
This isn't the full song; the iTunes track listing puts this song at 5:21, but this video is only around 3:45. I wouldn't be surprised if there's some kind of full bodied climactic point right after where this recording stops. I guess we'll have to wait until the 19th.
This is such a crazy great and sad song!!!
It's like almost falling completely in love and being ready... but it doesn't happen... but still he hopes it will. Delivered and executed in a very hopeless Chris Martin fashion. That melody.
This song brought back that feeling that there's no better drug than music! Keep it up Coldplay!
NA sobotni wieczór PIĘKNY kawałek COLDPLAY z rozgłośni BBC
Pozdrawiam Romeczku, miłego wieczoru życzę....:-)))
Janina Bieniasiewicz
HEJKA JANINKO - MIŁEGO WIECZORU :))))
I hated Magic and Midnight at first, but they grew on me. Another's Arms and Oceans I love from the beginning. I went from being nervous to very excited about this new album. This song is Parachutes-like, and I love it!
Always in my head as well
I loved Midnight, but I wasn't a giant fan of Magic, and the song hasn't grown a lot on me. I do like it though. I just got burnt out on songs like Charlie Brown and the others from Mylo Xyloto.
Vincent Vermilya yeah they were a bit throw-away unlike most of Coldplay's stuff
Some songs on Mylo Xyloto I really like, but some like Paradise were overproduced. Up With the Birds, Major Minus, & Princess of China were the best ones off their last album. Charlie Brown was good, but Magic was a little too similar.
Gosh this is awesome. Reminds me of parachutes. SO COOL!
Like a song that should be on their first album. Love it!
the original coldplay sound, touch of spys in the back ground! love it!!!!
Annnnnnnd that is what Talent sounds like people.
No autotune!
Just a good voice.
gah I love Coldplay to bits! :D
This song is definitely the best I've heard off their new album. They need more like this.
This song is sooooo calming they sound like their early version love this is their true essence
Coldplay you always find a way to enhance my imagination, to bring me to another world.
Coldplay's low key tone throughout Ghost Stories is symbolic of a life shift for Chris and his unpartnering with GP...so it goes...he once said he felt like he had one the Lottery, today that seems so far in the past...he's growing as a man and father...
this song ( and most of the songs on this album) gives me the exact same spine shivering feelings that i get when falling asleep to Parachutes :)
Sounds like Parachutes which makes me soooooo happy and makes me think of my childhood aw
Its right what a person commented on another live performance of the new album, that when live throws hard times at you, you throw yourself into what you love doing best. I can actually believe that watching him sing this song as you can hear the pain in his voice. So far this album seems like it will be a mix of sounds and styles of almost all of their albums which is fucking awesome.
Never thought I'd say this- Coldplay are back :)
Now this is the Coldplay I used to love back in the day (haunting vocals, ethereal music,etc...) as opposed to that band masquerading as them for the last couple of years. This tune is like a cross between Spies and Politik
