  • This is very much presented on a "sold as seen" basis - 17 minutes from various BBC channels at the time of the great Parliamentary debate on the Iraq war. Sadly the BBC Ten'o'clock news just missed the first vote. We then cross to BBC News 24, and finally to Newsnight.
This is from 18 March 2003.

Fun fact, boris voted for the iraq war in all four votes concerning it. It's just funny how so many people who call Blair a war monger are fine with boris even though their votes were worth the exact same.

Ditto Cameron and May too I believe.
Meanwhile Corbyn, someone obliterated by the media, voted against it.
It's funny how the media can pedal their own narrative about who is virtuous and who is a scumbag.

I don't call either of them warmongers but I do think it is reasonable to apportion more blame or credit - depending on your view of the decision to go to war - on Blair than on individual MP's, especially Opposition backbenchers, which Johnson was at the time. The PM made the case for war and commended it to the House, after about six solid months of publicly stating his position. MP's voted on the basis of those arguments, but they weren't involved in the background to them or in making the decision and putting the vote before the House.

@@simonzonenblick395 I can easily agree that the PM hold's FAR more power than an individual MP may have. I am no fan of Blair anyways, he was as much "Labour" as Ayn Rand was. That is to say, the guy was a Conservative through and through on literally every policy- regardless of whether he ran as Labour or not. And now the Labour party is making the same mistake and shifting EVEN further to the right with someone like Starmer. The good news is, this debate is totally moot, because if Boris Johnson was PM at the time he would have happily pushed through the war, possibly even more enthusiastic than Blair himself did.
