I like these videos, I started fly fishing 2 weeks ago and have already tied 25 or so flies. Thanks for all the narrative and easy following instruction!
Thinking about a mid December trip to NY Salmon River, and I may have to try to tie this. Thanks! Also, I like the idea of Fall focused flies...
Amazing. Can you please stay on the topic of fall. I find this very helpful and will be giving this pattern a try
Dave does a nice job
This would also make an excellent tube fly.
Nice fly maybe try tying stealhead/salmon patterns using composite loops.
Sick! Looks good if it’s small for trout to maybe
Nice one I'm heading up next Friday
Maybe a little glue before your tinsel would make it more durable
Nice
Very nice
Nice fly. where do you get the materials tho?
Great looking fly
What were the last two materials used?
Thanks!
What do you use to film your ties? Nice pattern!
I see salmon flies like this but I don't know what they are suppose to be. I thought they were bait fish patterns but some have wings. If anyone knows please tell me.
Hi Joshua, so the way the fly looks on the vise is very different than how the fish will see it. The way these flies are fished higher in the water column, the fish actually see the fly from below. The "wing" will form into a tear drop shape like a small baitfish profile, the throat will look like the gills. All the materials breathe and pulsate in the current like a baitfish. In the Great Lakes these salmon and trout feed on bright orange gobies. I hope this is helpful.
Dave McKenna if one were to substitute the wing, would you be better off with orange marabou or buck tail? This looks like it would pulse like marabou but it is a hair like buck tail.
Most salmon and steelhead don't really feed much when they are travelling up rivers, so flies that are used to target them are generally those which will illicit an aggressive response. Such flies usually have the general outline of common food items, such as baitfish, squid, and/or leeches, and many have bright colours to grab the fish's attention. Think about a fly like the mickey finn; it has the profile of a baitfish but is very brightly coloured
Fly Fishing Eastern Sierras sorry for the late reply. I would go with Marabou as a replacement. Marabou over buck tail would be great and be a nice trout fly wing. Good luck!
I wonder who makes that comb?
I think Wasatch Tools made it.
