    Beautiful build. I know you had some issues along the way, but I swear these early 2000's Specialized FSR bikes were way ahead of their time. On flat trails and climbs, these bikes are super agile, fast, snappy, and truly hard to beat, even against modern bikes (in my opinion). Downhills? Well..... modern bikes have them beat. I'm glad you didn't give up on this legendary icon of XC race bikes. 👍

    I subscribed just for this bike! My own channel has a gaping hole in it from my own missing '02 S-Works, which died for a reason I ought to tell you about: this M5 frame was the first generation to be both canti and disc brake compatible, and in retrospect the seatstay disc brake mounts were probably under-engineered for the rotational stresses, especially for big-diameter rotors like you're running. Mine finally developed hairline cracks after many years, and thankfully I got lifetime frame warranty replacement - but you might not be so lucky if you're not its first owner. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you, please keep a close eye on that brake mount.

    • @EvansMTBSaga
      @EvansMTBSaga  Před 2 lety +1

      @@EvansMTBSaga Now that I would love to watch! I'd say welding is a step too far for me, I barely even bother painting on my projects. But if you do attempt it, I wonder how much all those proprietary M5 secret ingredients would complicate things. I'm no metallurgist but if there's things like ceramics and herbs and spices in there then how would they react to heat? Looking forward to your next instalment.

    Love the video! Last year I bought a 2006 Specialized Demo 9 Pro, and upgraded it with a bunch of new parts to turn it from a strictly downhill bike into more of an Enduro. Downduro? Either way I can appreciate what you did to keep this old bike running better than new. I'll never get the money I spent on my bike back, but I love it anyway! My MTB friends made fun of me for buying such an old bike as my first, but it makes me smile every time I ride it so I'm happy. You look happy on your bike too.

    I built up a 26er Ellsworth Truth like this, no corners cut and agreed you will never get the money back but still worth doing! I think we associate 26 with the clunky and noodly suspension and skinnier tubes, long stems and skinny bars available of the era. With the upgrades I had a nimble, fast accelerating and light XC machine. I traded it to a family with a kid shredder for a Niner RIP 9 - technically an upgrade but I never smile quite as much at end of a loop the way I did with that Ellsworth. Someone please make affordable straight high quality 26er forks again!

    I've used 2.4 tires (with tubes tough) on my gt sensor 2014 with inner 21mm and several people arroun where I live use wtb 23 with 2.4 27.5 tires so I'm not sure why would those tires would be that large.
    and the sensor was 3 by and had a good derailleur with clutch thing system so it wasn't that bad. Though the shimano cassete with deore is simply too good to not use.

    Overally-interesting and nice project, but you should definitely check the geometry. It had surely changed due to mounting a longer rear shock. Also, you didnt mention whether the fork is the same lenght as the old one.
    Updated need! :D

    nice to know those brakes, my two friends and i was just casually riding on our bikes to school. There was this tricky , small and steep hill that was 4 inches wide and 6 feet long, we loved to ride it but my friend (walther) rode down the hill and fell, he was last one to ride down it. Me and my other friend noticed so we ran over to him. My friend tried to pull up the bike but there came a massive stream of blood. It came from the right brake and little did we know, it was stuck in his leg. If we hadnt called for help he wouldve died from bloodloss, the whole brake was in his leg. If he had those brakes he wouldve been unharmed. BTW it didnt hit any nerves, bloodclots neither bones, lucky him. Eventually he had to move schools because he had to live in copenhagen in a mansion.

    the main thing i would change is that old fox fork, that era reba-s are amazing, the work better than modern solo air models and are simple for service.

      @EvansMTBSaga  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks for the advice. I'll look into the Reba-S, I wasn't mountain biking then so idk whats good and not. I feel like the Fox fork I went with has a decent damper, but I agree the air spring isn't great

      @@EvansMTBSaga and I honestly don't know now are old forks so expensive there, in Serbia, where all new parts are expensive af, you can get a good set of forks, serviced fairly recently, 26 with qr for around 100e😁

    Built up a 26er back in march of 2020... minon dhf tires, eagle nx drivetrain, rc3 44 micro ti fork, magura mt trail brakes, stans arch wheel set, and a dropper post... only to realize everyone is riding 27.5 and 29 and that i messed up .-. (still a fun ride though)

    The biggest issue I’ve had with old specialized is the frame bearings are broken, rusted, undersized and the bolts are difficult to remove. No point trying to stiffen the frame with a more rigid fork here
