    Nice tutorial vedio brought back my memory to the 1980s, when I used to write on cars and signs with paint, but I used to write on transperent paper first and pierced it with a needle and then dusted it with chalk powder. I Like this style of sign writing atractive and more durable. Thanks.

    Love this style of REAL sign writing ... I'm retired and did gold leaf work and pin striping on boats in Michigan back in the 60's.
    After 9 years US Army I took a job teaching art in Australia as I have a fine art degree, teacher's certificate. Here in Oz I found the demand was for Prime movers and motorcycle. I learned about 48 years ago from DuPont chemist to use urethane hardner with "one shot" lettering enamel and then clear coated the work with DuPont "Emron" clear ... I had no idea back then, so when I did boats or motorcycles it was my secret as no one could bury the pinstripes under a clear coat. I found teaching students to look in front of the brush and not the actual paint work...spot on ... I always told my students you need to practice as it's all about muscle memory ...very nice post mate.

    Beautiful job! The lack of blocking out the letters was impressive. All that being said, I hope you went back to the passenger side and finished the Green shadow under the "D"!!
    I do signs and store fronts in vinyl and would love to do more hand paint lettering. Thanks so much for the video. It was greatly appreciated!

      Well spotted...and I certainly did. One thing that was drummed into us as apprentices was that a one minute check round the job before heading home could prevent a potential two hour+ round trip, to add in ONE bit of shading .

    I just started hand lettering as a hobby. The tip that really made the light bulb go off for me was, every movement is in unison with every muscle, tendon, sinew from the finger to the shoulder.

      It's hard to explain, but basically you need to train all of the senses to focus on the end result.

  • @53Peterbilt
    @53Peterbilt Před 3 měsíci +2

    Excellent workmanship.
    I would have been inclined to do a pounce pattern though. This way you don't have to do 2 full layouts, plus it's nice to get everything spaced properly and dialed in before working on the vehicle. Why do it twice?
    Love the 2-tone shadows.

    • @JohnBoy-Signwriter
      @JohnBoy-Signwriter  Před 3 měsíci +3

      It quite literally took me less than 10 minutes to mark out BOTH sides. How long would it have taken to draw out and make a pounce pattern???...probably well over an hour and I reckon that even a "stolen valor signwriter" with a computer generated template couldn't even come close to that. I also had to take into consideration the geographical location of the vehicle, which involved a three hour round trip as it was, so a preliminary site visit to accurately measure the vehicle would have potentially doubled the travelling time/fuel etc. and effectively taken another working day out of my schedule. all this would have obviously incurred many extra costs which would have been unacceptable to the customer, but besides all that, if I couldn't do a simple job like that without a template, there wouldn't be much hope for me as a signwriter.
      P.S. The double shade is something that you don't see too often and whilst it doesn't neccessarily suit all applications, when used sparingly it can be an incredibly effective and relatively fast way of making something 'pop' without going down that whole "must use every colour in the spectrum/chisel faced/ bevelled edge/outlined/inlined/blended block shadow/cast shadow with extra drop shadow etc. etc. etc. circus cart route.

    While this is respectable sign writing, I would recommend for beginners to spend more time on layout. Better guidelines will help in knowing where your brush lands and not create spacing issues. Drawing two lines per stroke gives better guidance to knowing where the brush will go. Patterns might help.

    really interesting how you used green against red which is often said to be a very jarring / unharmonious combination. Èm guessing because the green is so dark and even the red is a slightly darker than primary red, that the combo works ·?)---also you are correct as soon as the green goes on the red is pulled into the background ! Wow !

    • @JohnBoy-Signwriter
      @JohnBoy-Signwriter  Před 11 měsíci +2

      I'm sure we are all familiar with the old addage that "Red with Green should never be seen, exept for in the washing machine", but it's all to do with how it is used. Mid greens tend to clash with bright reds, but don't automatically rule out this combination as it definitely can be used to great effect. Darker reds can also work with lighter hues of green and an effect of great oppulance can be created with red with dark green. Every colour's visual perception will be influenced by its surroundings.

    I still don’t get the “ magic dust” removal trick, wouldn’t you dirty up the paint, nevermind potentially scratching up the substrate paint ? Never the less, so far the best vid on the subject I have seen in a long time, and I certainly watched a lot of those. Great skill and understanding of it all, thx a bunch.

    • @JohnBoy-Signwriter
      @JohnBoy-Signwriter  Před 7 měsíci

      There's a wee knack to it which is difficult to explain, but basically the dust absorbs the paint whilst transferring it to the finger which is simultaneously flicked outwards and away from the substrate where it can be wiped clean. In over forty years, I have never known this method to cause any problems, even on fresh paintwork...you are more likely to cause damage with a rag, which can cause staining by rubbing the paint into the substrate. Even on the rare ocasinons that I would feel the need to use one of those rubber tipped thingies, I would always rub it lightly in some dust first. As long as there are no visibly large chunks of dirt in the dust you should be good.

    is there something untraditional about using a mahl stick? i can letter without a mahl stick but it sure is faster and more comfortable to use a mahl stick

    • @JohnBoy-Signwriter
      @JohnBoy-Signwriter  Před 4 měsíci

      It's possibly just a personal thing...ie. I was trained (during my five year apprenticeship) to NOT rely on a mahl stick and whilst I do know that they have their place, I personally see them as, not only an unnecessary crutch, but also as a hinderance/obstruction. I hope to do a more in depth video on this subject in the near future, but basically, my left arm is my mahl stick.

  • @joe2grand

    great video thank you for taking the time to make it---very helpful!! If it is possible , may I ask a question: I notice you didnt use any sort of paint enhancer/flow enhancer /flow improver. Some other signwriters swear by it, using the Ålphanamel Flow Enhancer, or Owatrol Oil . Any advice on these ?

    • @JohnBoy-Signwriter
      @JohnBoy-Signwriter  Před 11 měsíci

      Can't say that I've ever needed to use any flow enhancers and I can think of very few occasions (eg. blending) where having paint dry slowly would be of any benefit. I have no experience with those products, so I couldn't comment on them.

    Why do you use Turpentine instead of mineral spirit ?

    • @JohnBoy-Signwriter
      @JohnBoy-Signwriter  Před 3 měsíci +1

      It's not really important and real turps is not easy to get hold of, but when I can get hold if it, I prefer to use it for various reasons eg. white spirit/mineral spirit/turpentine substitute or whatever you want to call it is very inconsistent in quality and I personally find that paint flows better with real turps and seems to work better with red sable bristles...plus, of course; I love the smell of turpentine in the morning...smells like pine trees.
