I was at this game, this was my senior year at KU. That was easily our best team in at least two decades, and Nebraska just waxed us. I called Nebraska as the national champ immediately after this game.

I still am in awe that anyone picked Florida to beat Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl. The Big Red played probably their two worst games of the year against Kansas and Oklahoma, and they still won by a combined score of 78-3. The Blackshirts were the real deal that season, and dominated Steve Spurrier's offense. Loved what Kent Pavelka said during that epic 2nd Quarter: "The Fun-n-Gun? The fun is done!!"

Spurrier was 11-10 lifetime in bowls. Think about it, 10 times a coach that has been hyped as a very good coach lost his last game of the season against NON SEC opponents. Impressive? Not at all.
Auburn beat Spurrier by 39 points in what is still the worst beatdown in SEC championship history (56-17). Spurrier frequently choked when it mattered.

And Nebraska had come out of a stacked Big 8 conference (Look at how Kansas, K-State, and Colorado did in their bowl games.)

@John Something I won't lie to you, though, Kansas got hosed on some of the officiating in that game that changed some of their momentum in the first half. But, you're right, NOTHING went right for the Jayhawks in this game.

Glen Mason retired with a 123-121 overall record. He had a losing season in 94 and 96. And he just got good in 95? Really, or was he playing most of the deadbeats that Neb played.

I am SO glad I found this channel, and that you posted this game. It's one of those games you look at the box score and say "how in the hell did they win that game by 38 points against a very good team on their home field?" Of course, the answer is 27 points off of five turnovers.
Afterwards, you appreciate the greatness of the 1995 team even more.

Absolutely loved ABC's CFB music back then (now, they use this canned, corporate pop rock or alt. industrial rock/hip hop mashup stuff that has nothing to do with college football). It just sounded like music to support college football. The college band sound probably helped :-)
And, while watching this game, I finally developed a couple of theories as to why the Heisman committee gave Eddie George the award that season, and not Tommie Frazier (and it's always politics): Lawrence Phillips.
    1) They were punishing Frazier because of Lawrence Phillips (even after Phillips had served his suspension). They played in the same backfield. Phillips was the frontrunner for the Heisman before his suspension. Lawrence tainted, what had been, a clean program. They couldn't give the award to the next most deserving player - even, and especially - when that player played in the same backfield. So, instead of giving the Heisman to Tommie (from an undefeated team many think was one of the best CFB teams in history), they gave it to a good, but not great back on a two-loss team.
I also think Lawrence Phillips accelerated Tom Osborne's decision to retire.
    2) Tommie wasn't such a great passer. And if there's one thing a Heisman-winning QB better be, it's a better-than-good passer. Few QB's in recent CFB history could equal Tommie on the run, but his passing wavered between good and awful too often. His passing is not what opposing defenses feared.

Kansas, Kansas State, Colorado, against teams not named Nebraska or when not facing each other- undefeated.
I think a forgotten element of what made 1995 Nebraska so legendary- they clobbered quality teams.
Florida won a national title the following year with basically the same team.
And these 3 Big 8 teams won their bowl games decisively.

Neb (11-1) was 3 pts from being 12-0 and undefeated and 9 points from having 4 losses and prob a #18 ranking.
FSU (12-1) was 8 pts from being 13-0 and undefeated and 35 points from having 4 losses and prob a #18 ranking.
FSU gets brownie points for winning 1 more game and winning the head to head with Neb.
So, once again, the football gods got it right. FSU should have finished ranked higher than Neb.
      Oh, one more thing.

The final year of the Big 8 Conference.

    • @gynandroidhead
      @gynandroidhead Před 7 lety +6

Yes, and half of the conference finished in the top ten. It was a great way for the Big 8 to go out.
With regards to the conference, what's even more amazing is that Colorado, Kansas, and Kansas State all finished with 10-2 records. Besides all three of these teams losing to Nebraska, they all lost their only other game between themselves (Colorado lost to Kansas, Kansas lost to Kansas State, and Kansas State lost to Colorado).
Along with this game, the other significant game was the home game vs. Washington State which they won 35-21. This game has some of the worst stats they had all year in a game against a team which was the best 3-8 team I've seen in major college football for quite some time (go look at their schedule and you'll see why).
