This Florida team was no slouch. The '95 Florida Gators were undefeated SEC Champions that played five ranked teams and defeated every opponent by double digits. They were one of the most dominant teams in the history of the SEC. It's hard to argue that the '95 Nebraska Cornhuskers weren't the greatest college football team of all time.
@@dirkdiggler2865 2001 Miami may have been loaded with NFL talent, and they sure were a talented team, but this Nebraska team absolutely dominated in every game they played. Nebraska won by no less than 14 in all games. Three fellow conference members finished in the top 10, and Nebraska soundly pummeled them, winning by more than 20 in each game. With that said, 2001 Miami had two games they barely won, the teams they played were not as good as the teams Nebraska played, and the team Miami beat in the NCG was not as good as ‘95 Florida.
@@User-wh1mh 2001 Miami Hurricanes is definitely the best. Virginia Tech was one of the toughest teams at the time. Not only that, Nebraska didn’t have the toughest schedule, some of the teams people claimed were good had terrible records compared to the teams Miami played. Florida was their best opponent rank and schedule wise. Nebraska would play aggressive the entire game and just barely subbed in back-ups, Miami on the other hand had teams shutout by the first half and then would put the game in cruise control and subbed in back-ups. If Miami went full speed through every game, who knows how bad they would have shutout each team they played. Literally every game but one was a double digit victory. And two slow games should not kill a teams rep because one team was actually good and Miami let off the gas against them and the other was just a slow game for them. Miami definitely had better determination, will and drive when it came to playing. The 2001 Miami hurricanes are definitely the best college football team.
@@christwarrior8501 ‘95 Nebraska played tougher opponents than 2001 Miami. As I said, three opponents they slammed to the ground finished in the top 10, and ‘95 Florida was definitely better than 2001 VT. It isn’t really relevant to bring up players being subbed out. When players are subbed out, you are usually winning the game by four TD’s or more regardless of the decision. The point is that Nebraska won by 14 points or more every game and given the scores in which you tend to put subs, likely wouldn’t have mattered to screw up that margin. With regards to BC, bad games are certainly worth bringing the reputation of the *best team ever* to question, especially when you are in threat of losing. Nebraska was never in threat of losing all season and trailed only once early in a game against Wazzu. Meanwhile, a late pick-six by Miami that was intercepted deep in their own territory may have very well saved them from a loss to BC.
@@User-wh1mh If you look at the teams Miami played and checked their records, you could see they didn’t have some cupcake schedule. Every ranked team Miami played, but one, they shutout. Miami may not have played as many top ten teams as Nebraska, but the one team they did play in the top ten they dominated against. And Nebraska had an excellent team at the time, but still was shutout by Miami in the first half. Also Nebraska trailed in two games, where as Miami trailed once and that was because of a missed field goal on a p.a.t against Pittsburgh, other than that no one got ahead of them. I understand where you’re coming from though, but that hurricanes team was on another level.
I am 62 years old. This is the only football game I have ever seen where one team made the other team quit. This Nebraska team is the greatest college team of all time.
As a Gator fan I was shocked at the massacre , but it was the best thing to happen to us in a something was missing way. We were hi-tech but we weren't physically tough enough for the grand prize. Nebraska ran over us like a freight train. As a Buckeye fan I recognize this Huskers squad as the best I've ever seen with my own eyes. We've had elite teams. Maybe our skill guys are better. But I still believe football is won in the trenches. This team just made opponents quit on the line and I truly feel that they instilled fear in the opponent. I also appreciate the Huskers as ILOVE option football. When run to protection it is beautiful.
Anybody who tries to place any college team above the 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers is suffering from delirium. While Miami and Alabama may have had more pro players, Nebraska was the deepest team the college games has ever known. A perfect blend of power and speed. Three, four and five deep at every position. Throughout their decimation of the Gators, coach Osborne shuttled players in entire units. As commentator Jim Nantz stated during one drive Nebraskas defense was making plays with their third team lineup!
To continue my comment, the offensive line was two and three deep as well as the backfield. There were five fullbacks on that Team! To top it off the Huskers had probably the greatest option quarterback ever in Tommie Frazier. The Huskers pulverized the Gators with over 500 yards rushing! How many teams are so powerful the quarterback runs for over 200 yards? This team had no peer for power and the ability to cram a ball at will down an opponents throat. In this game to the tune of a 62-24 ass whipping. The score was in no way an indication of how badly the Gators were annihilated. While Alabama has had a stronger program for a longer period of time, Nebraska had the greatest five year run in college football history. Three national championships and a 60-3 record in Tom Osbornes final five seasons! I will gladly place this team against any college team ever put together. Their depth found the breaking point of every opponent. And shattered it.
Ur a fool. Nebraska wasn’t good. Not even in this game. The team was flooded with performance enhancing drugs and the players have even admitted it in an article in the LA Times.
You are uninformed grasshopper. Check out my analysis of LSU2019 vs Neb71 and Neb95. LSU absolutely flattens both of them. Both scored more in their NC game and won by a larger margin. Every other metric (about 25) LSU won. Besides ESPN sept 2019 before LSU2019 top 150 had Neb95 #4.
Those offensive and defensive lines for Nebraska were something special. And after all these years of different offensive and defensive schemes, those two things are still what wins football games. While I love Ryan Day and our offensive passing, he could learn something from this team. When your run game is dominant, you dominate TOP and your defense is fresh even in the 4th quarter.

This Nebraska team was easily the best team I personally have ever seen...They were absolutely loaded from top to bottom...This florida team was no sloutch and they made them look like high schoolers...I remember watching Tommy Frazier when he played high school ball in Bradenton at Manatee high...I come back now and then to see this team play...You just never see this kind of domination...My VOLS played Nebraska a couple of times after this game and got beat up good too.

The week before FL routed Ark 95 in the SECC, unranked LSU beat Ark 28-0. Then after FL, NC beat Ark. In the other words the best of the West (Ark 95) sucked. Bottom like, only 2 teams in the SEC finished in the top 20 in 95, the fewest of the 90s. Can't cherry pic top 25 and compare to top 20 that existed more than half of Osborne's silliness. This absolute butt-whuppin' set the tone for the '96 season for the Gators. The returning players came back bigger and faster. Weird to say thank you for getting smacked in the face but iy showed the Gators how far they had to go to win it all. Nebraska had an amazing team and a heck of a run.
Florida schools did the same for Nebraska. Getting smoked in bowl games every year made Nebraska recruit the bigger, faster players from Florida, Texas, etc. that helped set up their run.
Nebraska lost to FSU, Miami and Washington in prior years which made it obvious to switch to more speed on defense. Adding the 4-3 defense changed how Nebradka attacked offenses for several years. This Florida team was a great team. Earlier this year, they were down by three scores to Peyton Manning's UT team in the 2nd half and blew up to win the game by nearly 20 points!
@Jamal Greasy I didn't see the UT v UF game that year, but I remember watching another game and getting updates on how Florida was getting crushed, then all of a sudden all of the highlights were Florida scoring and scoring and scoring and completely shutting down Tennessee. After that, I never relaxed during the Fiesta Bowl knowing if Florda got going, then who knows what the outcome would've been. Spurrier put together some amazing offenses back in the 90's!!!
Which was a bigger no show? FL losing to Neb by 38 or 2 games later #1 Neb losing to #17 ASU 19-0? Only 1 of 3 shutouts in Osborne's 307 games and #10 in his worst loss ever. The AP poll says the loss to ASU was worse. Neb fell 7 places. FL didn't fall after the loss to Neb. lol, Neb fans have a problem. Nebraska would have won five National Championships in a row from 1993-1997 if they had not lost to Florida State in 1993, and to Arizona State and Texas in 1996. It was clearly the best five year stretch in college football history. I remember how everyone was talking about those Huskers.

Yeah and that 1993 game came down to two field goals in the last 30 seconds against a Florida State team that basically blew out most of its opponents. Lots of people expected FSU to beat them by a couple touchdowns but Nebraska basically shut them down and, as a Seminole fan, I'll admit that we got lucky that game.
Best college team I've seen in my lifetime. The 2001 Miami 'Canes might have had much more NFL Talent............. however this 1995 Nebraska team didn't have any close calls and it was a competitive Big 8 that year as well.
i was living in LA in 2001 and went to that Rose Bowl. sat right in front of a couple of Old Birds from Miami in full Hurricane garb that looked like the duck outfit. man, they were funny and by the middle of the 3rd Quarter, me and my Cornhusker buddies were chanting "we're #2" and laughing with the old gals.

as a gator alum, this hurt at the time, but the 97 Sugar bowl beat down of fsu would not have happened had uf not gotten embarrassed on national tv. this provided major motivation for the following year. as a gator, i will trade a game against nebraska for a victory over fsu anyday
Well you should be thanking Nebraska twice then, had they not lost to Texas in the BIG XII Championship Game, the Gators would never have gotten that rematch against FSU.

Even Frazier’s teammates thought he was down. He was so ahead of everyone after breaking those limp-wristed tackle attempts, that he had to wait for his own guys to get to the end zone
Ran into Ahman Green the day before the game at lunch in one of those poolside places in Scottsdale. There were Gator fans aplenty but they didn't recognize him. The New Years day bowl games were on TV's all over the place but Ahman wasn't watching. He was with an assistant coach and I know Osborne so I asked Ahman how he thought we would do tomorrow against the Gators. He's a quiet, shy guy, freshman in college and he softly said "We are going to Cha Cha tomorrow with a smile."
He had a nightmare in that same stadium the next year vs ASU (sadly for me, as I am an Arizona fan) in a defining game for 1996 ASU, and a shut out of Nebraska. I was there, and it shocked the hell out of me. Seemed ASU came out of nowhere that year.
One further comment. Maybe 100 years from now some team will come along that will surpass the 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers. None have so far. Tom Osbornes final five seasons at Nebraska will never be matched. Three National Championships and a 60-3 record!
exactly, our defense was stacked. and what makes it even more special so was our offense. i wonder how our defensive stats would compare to the '85 Bears D? our D scored alot, sacked alot, great run defense, turnovers, etc.

I bet on Nebraska to win this game, which I never did because every time I bet on someone they lost even when the team I bet on was a heavy favorite. After the first quarter I was worried and told a friend "This game is going to come down to who has the ball last." Thank goodness I was wrong.
This was a hell of a team. Nobody that year was capable of beating them. With that said, the florida team especially on defense was tailor made to showcase what nebraska's strengths were. That defense was real easy to trap and nebraska did this much of the night and florida's over pursuit made the option even more effective.
Florida was also one sided on offense and many teams would go to nickle or dime and give Florida easy runs throughout the season Nebraska played them straight up. Stopped the run completely and got to Weurfel forcing him to dink and dunk.
@@thelitmedallion you are correct, Florida was a very flawed team, no running game. Nebraska whipped them up front. By nature, Florida had a high risk, high reward offense and it backfired against Nebraska. To beat Nebraska, you had to be great up front to stop all the option plays, blast plays, trap, etc. Florida was not this and they paid the price.
@@quinnschroetlin you are absolutely correct. One coach I had in high school was an assistant under spurrier from 1991-1994. The fun n gun is high risk, high reward. Nebraska won up front and thus won the game. My next coach after that was an assistant under Earle Bruce at Ohio State and he was more a fundamental coach and he developed strong defensive and offensive lines with strong backfields and complementary passing. I wasn't surprised that spurrier came out throwing. The fun n gun is 60-40 passing at that time. It was amazing to see how he changed in the 2000s and was able to win grind it out games. The fault I could see with the Nebraska game plan as you stated was the lack of secondary throws for wuerffel. Running it out of the shotgun may have taken some of the pressure off the O-Line and caused less blitzes to be called. In regards to fun n gun passing game and the thought process behind it, a QB first looks for the touchdown then, the check down throw. This night, that philosophy was castastrophic when combined with an overmatched O-line and a defense that over pursued and was on the field too long. Plays took long to develop, wuerffel got hit too much and Nebraska took advantage of an over pursuing defense using a flex 4-3; the wrong defense to use against Nebraska. They gave the trap and and backside iso play away. That night, Nebraska's offense was only about 8-12 basic plays. Now, one matchup I would love to have seen was 95 Nebraska vs 92 Bama. I say first team to ten wins if it even ten points are even scored between the two teams.
@@quinnschroetlin going under center isn't necessarily bad even in a single set back offense like Dennis Erickson's offense at Miami. The backs are usually rotated and at least one is a capable of moving the pile. To go under center one must be good at play action, have the threat of a trap, reverse, etc. The line also better be strong. If not, the shotgun is more favorable. As for this game on this night, there was a talent gap. But, the preparation was really where the game was won by Nebraska and lost by Florida. This is the one game Spurrier doesn't talk about. But, it's amazing to see how he adapted his team after this.
@@quinnschroetlin no problem. I am fortunate to have been a QB for a fun n gun assistant and have been a QB in a system more akin to y'all. Fundamentals are fundamentals. Preparation is preparation and one must either beat the man up front or find a way to deal with what the opponent does best while doing what you must to try and move the ball effectively, score and stop the opponent. Watching y'all play Florida that night was amazing. When you watch what happened, Dr. Osbourne only used about 8-12 plays centered around the trap, load option, triple option, counter and, ISO. The offense used about half a dozen formations. He really just took what Florida gave him and did it masterfully. On defense, was also a work of art, he pressed the issue and no other team did that against them and the results were spectacular. Yet, we should not be surprised. Y'all beat a better, more physical and more complete Miami team the year before in the Orange bowl.
The good thing for Florida this night was that the Nebraska defense wasn’t on the field that much, otherwise the physical ass-kicking would have been worse.
Neb was so physically stronger than UF. It became more evident as the game went on. FL became dumbfounded, then increasingly intimidated, and then curled into the fetal position. While the style has changed today, this reminds me of how Clemson overpowers Ohio St. in recent years when they play.
"We may have witnessed one of the greatest teams in college football history" says Terry Donahue near the end. That was the greatest college football team that's ever played. Repeat champs. A lot of people forget that #2 Florida team there is good enough to win it all the next year. A great core of players. Frazier should have won the Heisman. Phillips would have won it had he not had his issues. Nebraska went 60-3 from '93-97. The '97 NU team that whipped Peyton Manning's Vols in the Orange Bowl beat a Tennessee team that was good enough to win it all the next year too. Go Big Red.
@Jamal Greasy LSU was playing an offensive set that heavily relied on the spread. This is a new tactic in football that teams are adopting from the traditional run options; which SEC Big 10 and other programs are known for. The 01 Canes wouldn’t even have a defensive schematic that would respond to last year’s LSU. And the level of competition from over a decade ago pales to today’s. Canes wouldn’t know what to do.

But, the talent of a 90’s team is nowhere near where we at today; and the Huskers beat 4 top 10 when LSU beat 7. And remember; Huskers ran the run option and LSU knows how to stop that on any given Sunday; excluding in 71 when they lost to the Huskers. And look at the margin of wins of LSU compared to NE. They dominated every team they played. NE, not so much: during a time where football wasn’t on the level today. I am a huge Husker fan since Tommie Frazier. @Jamal Greasy Um no, I went to wazzu; Leach tried that Air Raid shit and got ran through in the PAC. The spread is relatively new as in there are programs that still heavily relied on run. Mainly Big 10 and SEC. it’s antiquated and the future is air raid/spread: one contribution from Leech. This is the first time LSU adopted it under Ogden. Other teams are adapting to it albeit slowly. And the spread has more and more plays and routes added to it. Last year LSU would run circles round 95 NE. They wouldn’t even have a playbook to go off of. And keep in mind LSU still knows how to run and stop the run. LSU was too versitile for any 90s team. Shit, they was too versitile for teams in this decade.

You are off by a year. The following year Nebraska lost 2 games under Scott Frost. They were shut out by Arizona State 19-0 and lost to Texas 37-27 in the Big XII championship. They won against Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. It was the next year they played the Vols.

Neb faced 8 teams that went 33-55 and all of them kept Frazier in check. #2 FL allowed him the longest run of the season (31) and longest of his career (75). I watched the first couple of Florida series, during which they actually built a lead. I thought to myself, "Florida stands no chance. Nebraska is going to slaughter them". That offense was predicated on playing fast and keeping the defense on their heels. Even when Florida scored, it looked like they were struggling. In the second quarter, the dam broke. 1995 Nebraska was easily the best college football team in the modern era of the game. Big, strong, fast, well conditioned, motivated, disciplined, and mean as sin. They genuinely wanted to humiliate Florida that night. 62-24... and it wasn't even *that* close. Mission accomplished.

But, 1995 Nebraska was a far better *team* . Evidence: Nebraska played against 4 top ten squads that year, and destroyed all of them by a minimum of 3 touchdowns. The Florida game, which many pundits felt Nebraska would lose, wasn't even as close as the 38 point margin indicated. Witness: one of Florida's touchdowns would have been called back under present rules - he was clearly out; Nebraska allowed 2 blocked extra points - it happens but, it's atypical; the returned 2 point conversion probably should have counted, as the play was blown dead early; with the third string quarterback, Nebraska took a knee on the Florida 2 yard line. By my reckoning, that's an 18 point swing in Nebraska's favor. Add the blowout victories over Colorado, Kansas State, and Kansas (2/3 on the road, and all 3 of which finished in the top 10), and the metrics simply don't lie. 1995 Nebraska is the standard by which all dominant teams are measured. 2019 LSU is the only individual squad to come close. In fact, I initially gave them the nod for being slightly better because they played a murderers row schedule and more games. But, LSU had some tight games during the season. Nebraska was never challenged at all, with a schedule nearly as difficult as LSU's.
This was a great Nebraska team. UF was crazy good that year. The defense unfortunately was coached by Ron Zook. You see the difference in 96 under Stoops.
It was clear from the beginning who was mentally prepared to play and who wasn't. Florida looked lost the entire game. Steve really had no plan against Nebraska and their pressure.
Florida D was tailor made for Nebraska. That D was easy to trap and the overpursuit by Florida made the option devastating. To your point, Florida was not prepared for this game.

I maintain that between those two teams, first to ten would win if the winner even scored ten points. But, after cut blocking was made illegal, Nebraska was not the same. That rule and certain subtle rule changes made it hard for the huskers to keep up.

If you look at their big games that year in the regular season, vs penn state, washington, syracuse all teams that were ranked the game was over by halftime. Lot of it has to do with play calling too, they just ran the ball too much.
It's hard to point to a more dominant performance in all of college football history. Sure, any power 5 team can blow out their powder puff teams by 70 points, but to utterly embarrass an undefeated SEC team in the NCG, a team that won the natty the following year, on both sides of the ball is a feat that will never be matched. The only performance that comes close is when USC beat down Oklahoma in 04. And it wasn't just that Nebraska scored a lot of points, it's that they did it running that offense down Florida's throat for four quarters. They didn't put up video game numbers by tossing the ball across the field, they did it because they were just so superior at pushing Florida out of their way and out running them.

I remember all the sports pundits and so-called experts (Lee Corso of ESPN) were predicting that Florida's run and gun offense would be too much for Nebraska's defense to handle and that Steve Spurrier would win his 1st National Championship as a head coach. They also thought that since Nebraska had played every game that year on artificial turf, the grass field at the Fiesta Bowl would slow down their vaunted option rushing attack. As it turned out, Nebraska probably played their best game all season long, offensively and defensively totally dominating the Gators on both sides of the ball. Tommy Frasier had a career day running the ball and Nebraska's defense had a field day against Florida QB Danny Wuerffel (6 sacks/3 interceptions) all game long. Just goes to show you that these so-called sports experts really aren't sports experts at all.
People who say Solich should not have been fired don't really get it. The program went into steep decline after Eric Crouch (Osbourne's guy) left. 2002 was there worst season in half a century and the 9-3 in 2003 was fools gold (getting blowing out by the only three decent teams on their schedule). As awful as Bill Callahan and Mike Riley were, solich probably wouldn't have fared much better. Moving to the Big 10 may go down as the worst decision in college football history.

I'm 51. This is the best college football team I have seen play. There are some great teams that would give them a game. This makes me wonder what Wisconsin would have done without 3 star QBs with concrete in their shoes. The teams aren't that different. And there is a lot of NFL players on the Florida roster, and they still did this to them.
If you want to know how good this Nebraska team was, consider how good this Florida team was. They went undefeated in the regular season, which included an 8-game SEC schedule, Florida State, and the SEC Championship game. Their closest games of the season were 11 points, at Auburn and vs Florida State, and they led those games by as many as 23 (AU) and 22 (FSU) before the games got closer toward the end of the game. They trailed at halftime of one game - Tennessee - which they stormed back in the second half to win 62-37. It was UT's only loss! This was not a Cinderella team that was overmatched, like 2012 Notre Dame was vs Bama. This was one of the best teams statistically to qualify for the National Championship. And Nebraska destroyed them.

Frank Frostbite Bob Stoops’ K State defense gave up 49 to Nebraska, and they were a top ten team too. Yes, Stoops did help FL to the title the following year. But my point was just how dominant Nebraska was against a FL team that had been dominant all season long!
I was 12 years old during this game, and I remember reading Sports Illustrated and they predicted Florida had all the tools to win this game -- especially due to their speed (which caused Nebraska problems in their 18-16 loss in 1993 to FSU.....the refs helped FSU a lot too in that one). However, *this 95 Nebraska team was simply on another level* . They just steamrolled Florida and beat them down physically. The 95 Huskers are probably a top 4 team of all time, next to 2001 Miami and either 2004 USC or 2018 Clemson. Any one of those teams has an argument for best ever.

The Huskers should never have gotten away from the option and power run game offense. Once Callahan came in and installed the west coast offense it was all downhill. They ran the option as well as any team in the country and could always recruit the athletes that could run that offense but now they'll never be able to recruit for a pro style or west coast style offense as well as the big10 stalwarts like Michigan, Ohio st., etc.
The option made Nebraska unique. The top option quarterbacks around the country were often offered scholarships at other schools if they agreed to switch positions. Pass-happy schools wanted tall offensive linemen, leaving shorter, nasty bulldozers to the Huskers. No one used fullbacks like Nebraska. The TE were basically thinner linemen. The WR needed to know how to sustain blocks. Except for maybe running backs, and some linemen, Nebraska wasn't even recruiting the same guys as pass-happy teams on the coasts. It didn't always work against fast, elite defenses. But it sure worked better than the last 20 years of flavor-of-the-month offenses with losing seasons year after year.
19:45 - this is where the wheels come off the Florida wagon. Charlie McBride's decision to rotate in so many defensive lineman was something Florida's offensive line wasn't prepared for. It kept Nebraska at 100% despite the "fun n' gun" speed, and the team that got run down was the one running that scheme, after ONE quarter, not the defense. McBride is without a doubt one of the greatest defensive minds the sport had ever seen.

It's the greatest team I've seen, but it's hard to argue against the 1971 Huskers being the best team ever. The final AP poll had Oklahoma #2, Colorado #3, and Alabama #4. Nebraska beat all of them.

This Florida team was no slouch. The '95 Florida Gators were undefeated SEC Champions that played five ranked teams and defeated every opponent by double digits. They were one of the most dominant teams in the history of the SEC.

Nebraska won by no less than 14 in all games. Three fellow conference members finished in the top 10, and Nebraska soundly pummeled them, winning by more than 20 in each game. With that said, 2001 Miami had two games they barely won, the teams they played were not as good as the teams Nebraska played, and the team Miami beat in the NCG was not as good as ‘95 Florida.

Not only that, Nebraska didn’t have the toughest schedule, some of the teams people claimed were good had terrible records compared to the teams Miami played. Florida was their best opponent rank and schedule wise. Nebraska would play aggressive the entire game and just barely subbed in back-ups, Miami on the other hand had teams shutout by the first half and then would put the game in cruise control and subbed in back-ups. If Miami went full speed through every game, who knows how bad they would have shutout each team they played. Literally every game but one was a double digit victory. And two slow games should not kill a teams rep because one team was actually good and Miami let off the gas against them and the other was just a slow game for them. Miami definitely had better determination, will and drive when it came to playing. The 2001 Miami hurricanes are definitely the best college football team.

It isn’t really relevant to bring up players being subbed out. When players are subbed out, you are usually winning the game by four TD’s or more regardless of the decision. The point is that Nebraska won by 14 points or more every game and given the scores in which you tend to put subs, likely wouldn’t have mattered to screw up that margin.
With regards to BC, bad games are certainly worth bringing the reputation of the *best team ever* to question, especially when you are in threat of losing. Nebraska was never in threat of losing all season and trailed only once early in a game against Wazzu. Meanwhile, a late pick-six by Miami that was intercepted deep in their own territory may have very well saved them from a loss to BC.

As a Buckeye fan I recognize this Huskers squad as the best I've ever seen with my own eyes. We've had elite teams. Maybe our skill guys are better. Anybody who tries to place any college team above the 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers is suffering from delirium. While Miami and Alabama may have had more pro players, Nebraska was the deepest team the college games has ever known. A perfect blend of power and speed. Three, four and five deep at every position. Throughout their decimation of the Gators, coach Osborne shuttled players in entire units. As commentator Jim Nantz stated during one drive Nebraskas defense was making plays with their third team lineup!
To continue my comment, the offensive line was two and three deep as well as the backfield. There were five fullbacks on that Team! To top it off the Huskers had probably the greatest option quarterback ever in Tommie Frazier. The Huskers pulverized the Gators with over 500 yards rushing! How many teams are so powerful the quarterback runs for over 200 yards? This team had no peer for power and the ability to cram a ball at will down an opponents throat. In this game to the tune of a 62-24 ass whipping. The score was in no way an indication of how badly the Gators were annihilated. While Alabama has had a stronger program for a longer period of time, Nebraska had the greatest five year run in college football history. Three national championships and a 60-3 record in Tom Osbornes final five seasons! I will gladly place this team against any college team ever put together. Their depth found the breaking point of every opponent. And shattered it.

This absolute butt-whuppin' set the tone for the '96 season for the Gators. The returning players came back bigger and faster. Weird to say thank you for getting smacked in the face but iy showed the Gators how far they had to go to win it all. Nebraska had an amazing team and a heck of a run.
Florida schools did the same for Nebraska. Getting smoked in bowl games every year made Nebraska recruit the bigger, faster players from Florida, Texas, etc. that helped set up their run.
Nebraska lost to FSU, Miami and Washington in prior years which made it obvious to switch to more speed on defense. Adding the 4-3 defense changed how Nebradka attacked offenses for several years. This Florida team was a great team. Earlier this year, they were down by three scores to Peyton Manning's UT team in the 2nd half and blew up to win the game by nearly 20 points!
@Jamal Greasy I didn't see the UT v UF game that year, but I remember watching another game and getting updates on how Florida was getting crushed, then all of a sudden all of the highlights were Florida scoring and scoring and scoring and completely shutting down Tennessee. After that, I never relaxed during the Fiesta Bowl knowing if Florda got going, then who knows what the outcome would've been. Spurrier put together some amazing offenses back in the 90's!!!

Nebraska would have won five National Championships in a row from 1993-1997 if they had not lost to Florida State in 1993, and to Arizona State and Texas in 1996. It was clearly the best five year stretch in college football history. I remember how everyone was talking about those Huskers.

Yeah and that 1993 game came down to two field goals in the last 30 seconds against a Florida State team that basically blew out most of its opponents. Best college team I've seen in my lifetime. The 2001 Miami 'Canes might have had much more NFL Talent............. however this 1995 Nebraska team didn't have any close calls and it was a competitive Big 8 that year as well.
i was living in LA in 2001 and went to that Rose Bowl. sat right in front of a couple of Old Birds from Miami in full Hurricane garb that looked like the duck outfit. man, they were funny and by the middle of the 3rd Quarter, me and my Cornhusker buddies were chanting "we're #2" and laughing with the old gals.

Ran into Ahman Green the day before the game at lunch in one of those poolside places in Scottsdale. There were Gator fans aplenty but they didn't recognize him. The New Years day bowl games were on TV's all over the place but Ahman wasn't watching. He was with an assistant coach and I know Osborne so I asked Ahman how he thought we would do tomorrow against the Gators. He's a quiet, shy guy, freshman in college and he softly said "We are going to Cha Cha tomorrow with a smile."
He had a nightmare in that same stadium the next year vs ASU (sadly for me, as I am an Arizona fan) in a defining game for 1996 ASU, and a shut out of Nebraska. I was there, and it shocked the hell out of me. Seemed ASU came out of nowhere that year.
One further comment. Maybe 100 years from now some team will come along that will surpass the 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers. None have so far. Tom Osbornes final five seasons at Nebraska will never be matched. Three National Championships and a 60-3 record!

This was a hell of a team. Nobody that year was capable of beating them. With that said, the florida team especially on defense was tailor made to showcase what nebraska's strengths were. That defense was real easy to trap and nebraska did this much of the night and florida's over pursuit made the option even more effective.
Florida was also one sided on offense and many teams would go to nickle or dime and give Florida easy runs throughout the season Nebraska played them straight up. Stopped the run completely and got to Weurfel forcing him to dink and dunk.

By nature, Florida had a high risk, high reward offense and it backfired against Nebraska. To beat Nebraska, you had to be great up front to stop all the option plays, blast plays, trap, etc. Florida was not this and they paid the price.
@@quinnschroetlin you are absolutely correct. One coach I had in high school was an assistant under spurrier from 1991-1994. The fun n gun is high risk, high reward. Nebraska won up front and thus won the game. My next coach after that was an assistant under Earle Bruce at Ohio State and he was more a fundamental coach and he developed strong defensive and offensive lines with strong backfields and complementary passing. I wasn't surprised that spurrier came out throwing. The fun n gun is 60-40 passing at that time. It was amazing to see how he changed in the 2000s and was able to win grind it out games. The fault I could see with the Nebraska game plan as you stated was the lack of secondary throws for wuerffel. Running it out of the shotgun may have taken some of the pressure off the O-Line and caused less blitzes to be called. In regards to fun n gun passing game and the thought process behind it, a QB first looks for the touchdown then, the check down throw. This night, that philosophy was castastrophic when combined with an overmatched O-line and a defense that over pursued and was on the field too long. Plays took long to develop, wuerffel got hit too much and Nebraska took advantage of an over pursuing defense using a flex 4-3; the wrong defense to use against Nebraska. They gave the trap and and backside iso play away. That night, Nebraska's offense was only about 8-12 basic plays. Now, one matchup I would love to have seen was 95 Nebraska vs 92 Bama. I say first team to ten wins if it even ten points are even scored between the two teams.
@@quinnschroetlin going under center isn't necessarily bad even in a single set back offense like Dennis Erickson's offense at Miami. The backs are usually rotated and at least one is a capable of moving the pile. To go under center one must be good at play action, have the threat of a trap, reverse, etc. The line also better be strong. If not, the shotgun is more favorable. As for this game on this night, there was a talent gap. But, the preparation was really where the game was won by Nebraska and lost by Florida. This is the one game Spurrier doesn't talk about. But, it's amazing to see how he adapted his team after this.
@@quinnschroetlin no problem. I am fortunate to have been a QB for a fun n gun assistant and have been a QB in a system more akin to y'all. Fundamentals are fundamentals. Preparation is preparation and one must either beat the man up front or find a way to deal with what the opponent does best while doing what you must to try and move the ball effectively, score and stop the opponent. Watching y'all play Florida that night was amazing. When you watch what happened, Dr. Osbourne only used about 8-12 plays centered around the trap, load option, triple option, counter and, ISO. The offense used about half a dozen formations. He really just took what Florida gave him and did it masterfully. The good thing for Florida this night was that the Nebraska defense wasn’t on the field that much, otherwise the physical ass-kicking would have been worse.
Neb was so physically stronger than UF. It became more evident as the game went on. FL became dumbfounded, then increasingly intimidated, and then curled into the fetal position. While the style has changed today, this reminds me of how Clemson overpowers Ohio St. in recent years when they play.

A lot of people forget that #2 Florida team there is good enough to win it all the next year. A great core of players. Frazier should have won the Heisman. Phillips would have won it had he not had his issues. Nebraska went 60-3 from '93-97. The '97 NU team that whipped Peyton Manning's Vols in the Orange Bowl beat a Tennessee team that was good enough to win it all the next year too. Go Big Red.

This is a new tactic in football that teams are adopting from the traditional run options; which SEC Big 10 and other programs are known for. The 01 Canes wouldn’t even have a defensive schematic that would respond to last year’s LSU. And the level of competition from over a decade ago pales to today’s. Canes wouldn’t know what to do.

Mainly Big 10 and SEC. it’s antiquated and the future is air raid/spread: one contribution from Leech. This is the first time LSU adopted it under Ogden. Other teams are adapting to it albeit slowly. And the spread has more and more plays and routes added to it. Last year LSU would run circles round 95 NE. They wouldn’t even have a playbook to go off of. And keep in mind LSU still knows how to run and stop the run. LSU was too versitile for any 90s team. Shit, they was too versitile for teams in this decade.

You are off by a year. The following year Nebraska lost 2 games under Scott Frost. They were shut out by Arizona State 19-0 and lost to Texas 37-27 in the Big XII championship. They won against Virginia Tech in the Orange Bowl. It was the next year they played the Vols.

I watched the first couple of Florida series, during which they actually built a lead. I thought to myself, "Florida stands no chance. Nebraska is going to slaughter them".
That offense was predicated on playing fast and keeping the defense on their heels. Even when Florida scored, it looked like they were struggling. In the second quarter, the dam broke.
1995 Nebraska was easily the best college football team in the modern era of the game. Big, strong, fast, well conditioned, motivated, disciplined, and mean as sin. They genuinely wanted to humiliate Florida that night. 62-24... and it wasn't even *that* close. Mission accomplished.

They certainly had more raw talent. I don't recall exactly how many players on that team were on NFL rosters the following year, but it was a lot.
But, 1995 Nebraska was a far better *team* . Evidence: Nebraska played against 4 top ten squads that year, and destroyed all of them by a minimum of 3 touchdowns. The Florida game, which many pundits felt Nebraska would lose, wasn't even as close as the 38 point margin indicated. Witness: one of Florida's touchdowns would have been called back under present rules - he was clearly out; Nebraska allowed 2 blocked extra points - it happens but, it's atypical; the returned 2 point conversion probably should have counted, as the play was blown dead early; with the third string quarterback, Nebraska took a knee on the Florida 2 yard line.
By my reckoning, that's an 18 point swing in Nebraska's favor. Add the blowout victories over Colorado, Kansas State, and Kansas (2/3 on the road, and all 3 of which finished in the top 10), and the metrics simply don't lie.
1995 Nebraska is the standard by which all dominant teams are measured. 2019 LSU is the only individual squad to come close. In fact, I initially gave them the nod for being slightly better because they played a murderers row schedule and more games. But, LSU had some tight games during the season. Nebraska was never challenged at all, with a schedule nearly as difficult as LSU's.

That rule and certain subtle rule changes made it hard for the huskers to keep up.

It's hard to point to a more dominant performance in all of college football history. Sure, any power 5 team can blow out their powder puff teams by 70 points, but to utterly embarrass an undefeated SEC team in the NCG, a team that won the natty the following year, on both sides of the ball is a feat that will never be matched. The only performance that comes close is when USC beat down Oklahoma in 04.
And it wasn't just that Nebraska scored a lot of points, it's that they did it running that offense down Florida's throat for four quarters. They didn't put up video game numbers by tossing the ball across the field, they did it because they were just so superior at pushing Florida out of their way and out running them.

I remember all the sports pundits and so-called experts (Lee Corso of ESPN) were predicting that Florida's run and gun offense would be too much for Nebraska's defense to handle and that Steve Spurrier would win his 1st National Championship as a head coach. They also thought that since Nebraska had played every game that year on artificial turf, the grass field at the Fiesta Bowl would slow down their vaunted option rushing attack.
As it turned out, Nebraska probably played their best game all season long, offensively and defensively totally dominating the Gators on both sides of the ball. Tommy Frasier had a career day running the ball and Nebraska's defense had a field day against Florida QB Danny Wuerffel (6 sacks/3 interceptions) all game long.
Just goes to show you that these so-called sports experts really aren't sports experts at all.

People who say Solich should not have been fired don't really get it. The program went into steep decline after Eric Crouch (Osbourne's guy) left. 2002 was there worst season in half a century and the 9-3 in 2003 was fools gold (getting blowing out by the only three decent teams on their schedule). As awful as Bill Callahan and Mike Riley were, solich probably wouldn't have fared much better.

I'm 51. This is the best college football team I have seen play. There are some great teams that would give them a game. This makes me wonder what Wisconsin would have done without 3 star QBs with concrete in their shoes. The teams aren't that different. And there is a lot of NFL players on the Florida roster, and they still did this to them.

If you want to know how good this Nebraska team was, consider how good this Florida team was. They went undefeated in the regular season, which included an 8-game SEC schedule, Florida State, and the SEC Championship game. Their closest games of the season were 11 points, at Auburn and vs Florida State, and they led those games by as many as 23 (AU) and 22 (FSU) before the games got closer toward the end of the game. They trailed at halftime of one game - Tennessee - which they stormed back in the second half to win 62-37. It was UT's only loss! This was not a Cinderella team that was overmatched, like 2012 Notre Dame was vs Bama. This was one of the best teams statistically to qualify for the National Championship. And Nebraska destroyed them.

Frank Frostbite Bob Stoops’ K State defense gave up 49 to Nebraska, and they were a top ten team too. Yes, Stoops did help FL to the title the following year. But my point was just how dominant Nebraska was against a FL team that had been dominant all season long!
I was 12 years old during this game, and I remember reading Sports Illustrated and they predicted Florida had all the tools to win this game -- especially due to their speed (which caused Nebraska problems in their 18-16 loss in 1993 to FSU.....the refs helped FSU a lot too in that one). However, *this 95 Nebraska team was simply on another level* . They just steamrolled Florida and beat them down physically. The 95 Huskers are probably a top 4 team of all time, next to 2001 Miami and either 2004 USC or 2018 Clemson. Any one of those teams has an argument for best ever.

95 Nebraska greatest of all time
The Huskers should never have gotten away from the option and power run game offense. Once Callahan came in and installed the west coast offense it was all downhill. They ran the option as well as any team in the country and could always recruit the athletes that could run that offense but now they'll never be able to recruit for a pro style or west coast style offense as well as the big10 stalwarts like Michigan, Ohio st., etc.
Facts
The option made Nebraska unique. The top option quarterbacks around the country were often offered scholarships at other schools if they agreed to switch positions. Pass-happy schools wanted tall offensive linemen, leaving shorter, nasty bulldozers to the Huskers. No one used fullbacks like Nebraska. The TE were basically thinner linemen. The WR needed to know how to sustain blocks. Except for maybe running backs, and some linemen, Nebraska wasn't even recruiting the same guys as pass-happy teams on the coasts. It didn't always work against fast, elite defenses. But it sure worked better than the last 20 years of flavor-of-the-month offenses with losing seasons year after year.
19:45 - this is where the wheels come off the Florida wagon. Charlie McBride's decision to rotate in so many defensive lineman was something Florida's offensive line wasn't prepared for. It kept Nebraska at 100% despite the "fun n' gun" speed, and the team that got run down was the one running that scheme, after ONE quarter, not the defense. McBride is without a doubt one of the greatest defensive minds the sport had ever seen.

It's the greatest team I've seen, but it's hard to argue against the 1971 Huskers being the best team ever. The final AP poll had Oklahoma #2, Colorado #3, and Alabama #4. Nebraska beat all of them.
