Xbox 360 16D5S drive flashing feels like a lost art at this point.

  • In a run of Xbox 360 related content I've been working on, I decided to try my hand at making a 16D5S drive flashing tutorial. I've done it once years ago, I can do it again now, right? Oh how that almost didn't happen... This video is originally what was meant to be a tutorial, turned into a giant retrospective lovenote to my love for the Xbox 360 modding scene, and covering the hurdles I jumped through to finally get an unlocked board to take the firmware it desired. About one month has passed between recording this video and releasing it. More coming down the pipeline in terms of tutorial related content... Including coverage of this drive board so this lost art could hopefully be passed on!

This video has been made with Fair Use in mind and has been created as an educational piece of media.

You are part of the reason i got into 360 modding back in the day! I don't have any videos detailing mods specifically, but more along the lines of repairing them. (Game consoles)
I glitched a Xenon with a Canada CPU
    Many JTAG Xenons
    a few AUD Clamp Zephyrs
and ive only ever seen 1 Opus in my life. Those are super rare dude.
I've probably modded well over 100 xbox 360's
    &The xbox you mentioned @10:00
    that is a corona v3
    v1,3,5 are 16mb nand
    v2,4,6 are 4gb
    v3-6 need postfix
If you're ever interested, Modchat would be fun to do one day!

Dude I love that you make videos like these. Its nice to see a more raw not heavily edited/shortened video. Also super interesting video in general. Back in 2012 I had someone install RGH on my slim Trinity. Luckily my boot times are pretty good. Usually a few seconds or 10-20 seconds max. Only had a couple times in 10 years it didn't boot. I also installed a custom dvd pcb and flashed custom firmware on it. Good times.

Fantastic video man, watched the whole thing, loved it!
I remember trying to flash my jasper's drive without the x360usb Pro and tried to use some VIA Chipset PCI card which was cheaper than buying the x360usb pro. Didn't turn out too well as never even got the drive showing in Jungleflasher xD. I want to look into it again now after watching this video and maybe if I get it working I will post something about it.
    Thanks Mario :).

I remember that! I opted to not buy it since I had compatible motherboards on hand for a while, I didn't get the USB device until I got my own desktop which didn't play nice with drive flashing. It kept freezing on writes and bricking a Lite-on at the time, so it took me several attempts to complete the process. Did one drive that way and decided it was time to buy the X360USB PRO.

I‘ve flashed my 16D5S LTU board a year ago. The internal method isn‘t to hard to do. Here’s a tip for anyone trying this route: Change boot mode settings to legacy(not uefi+legacy), plug in a empty hdd or ssd in your sata port 1(not port 0). Then install a fresh 32 bit windows to it. Download Jungleflasher, install all the drivers and shutdown your PC. Then plugin your drive to Sata 0 and power the drive from your console(plug in a AV cable or it will shut itself down after a while). Turn your PC on and boot in the prev. installed Windows. Now Jungleflasher will detect the drive. This way, almost any newer motherboard could be used for drive flashing.

This was nice to listen to.
When I'm modding consoles I like to listen to your channel while I work.
Today was the first time I soldered anything. Yesterday I was helping my landlord clean out a mini storage that's under my apartment because I started renting one off of him. We were moving stuff out of the one i was renting to the next storage over that had stuff in it but wasn't being rented anymore. I came across a box that had a beat up dirty 360 sticking out of it. I asked him whose it was and he said it was the people that lived in my apartment before me, they never came to get there stuff out of the storage, and I could have it if i liked.
    So I took it!
After we were done working I fired up the 360 hoping to not see the red ring of death. It booted up, so then I started thinking, okay whats wrong with it, 2 seconds later I found that the disc drive was stuck shut. Easy fix I figured. So I teared that bad boy down to get inside. And let me tell you it was filthy I cleaned it outside of my place. Once I thought I had the tray realigned I booted it up pressed the open tray button and still stuck. I came to the conclusion the console must have been dropped. I have 2 spare parts 360's laying and they both have the same dvd drive. So desoldered the drive controller and soldered it into the one of the other drive housings and bingo it reads games and the tray opens and closes. And let me tell you about repasting it, It took 2 hours of soaking paper towels in alcohol and pressing them against the cpu, gpu, and letting them sit and coming back to get it off little by little. Same with the heatsinks, it was hardened to concrete. I repasted it with Thermaltake grease, not my go to but its just what I had on hand.
The 360 is currently being ran through its paces I'm just running Gears of war 2 on training mode its been about 2 hours and the console hasn't locked up yet.
I learned to solder from watching you work. While it was a tiny project I enjoyed doing it, and now I feel a little more confident with attempting bigger projects.

Very awesome, thanks for sharing! As a tip for the caked on solder, that's why I use ArcticClean, works super well and doesn't take as long as that! Also keeping around an old toothbrush to brush on the chip when it's mostly clean can help get ALL the old paste out of those tiny components.

Fantastic video man. I did watch it from the beginning to the end, and it was so refreshing to hear about all the past Xbox 360 modding tools back in the day. And I too remember countless sleepless nights when I was too trying to figure out certain tricky things like reading DVD keys from locked drives, using ck3 probe on a certain point of DVD drive pcb, it's just all too familiar to hear about it again. I can never forget the jingle tone music when you had just got done burning a verbatim Dual layer DVD disc back in those days. I also had to use the activate DVD.iso for several games in my past, I think Sega GT racing and of the new Forza Games requires me to use it I remember correctly.
But all in great work man, and one thing I want to also show appreciation for is thank for not being like other CZcams users and not putting ads every few minutes in a video. It is nearly impossible to enjoy a video if you get an ad break every 1 min in a video and I watched this entire video with probably 2 or 3 total ad breaks. I do the same for my content, I feel an ad breaks every 10-15 minutes is perfectly reasonable and comparable to watching a show on television, so that's what I always did for my longer videos. Anyways don't want side track, thanks again for the amazing video and great work on every portion on this video! 👍💯✌

I definitely enjoyed how... I guess you could say "unfiltered" this video was. You'd get to talking about something in particular, and I could clearly see how passionate you were about that particular piece. And a short time later, I could see that you'd drifted into a memory from that time. People at work tell me that I get into the same kinds of rants all the time, such as the following: I was playing with some PS2 mods the other day. Thank you, by the way. I followed a couple of your videos for that. Anyway, I had set up the DVD debug unlock hack (or whatever it's actually called), and I had locked it to PS2 games only. I don't rightly remember why at this point in time. I then messed around wiped my Free McBoot card... Yeah... Fun fact: In this state, you cannot use Free DVD Boot to fix the problem. I had to find my PS2 to PS3 card adapter, hook the thing into the PC, load Virtual Box, load Windows XP, pass through some stuff to make the drivers work, and ultimately flash the card again. Luckily, everything worked out, and I now have multiple working Free McBoot cards with the DVD debug unlock hack set back to play everything. Anyway, I've commented long enough. Thank you for the video, and I look forward to the next one.

I used to mod consoles back then on my old job, we never have those fancy tools like x360 pro usb, post fix adapter and other stuffs. I just user a VIA sata pci card and made a custom power supply for the drive that has a power and eject switch. Modified bunch of drives and also did transplant/swaps of drives. If I remember correctly sometimes I used slim drives on fat and vice versa, sometimes i use a lite-on drive board from a jasper to a slim. We never have a guide for a kamikaze mod. i just count the IC pin mark it with a pencil and solder away trough the chip lols. I also solder wires directly to the GPU/CPU of the 360 slim tondo RGH as we don't have those adapter's. It was wild back then, like a wild west for hardware modding and was very fun.
On Some difficult to deal with corona, it's a good Idea to have different types of Glitcher, experiment with wire length, wire patch and resistors values, then test with different timings. It may take time to get the right combination. I've also seen people use raspberry pi pico to RGH an xbox360, it might work with your corona.
You are right about the software and OS those modding app uses. that why I still have my hdd of with the OS and all the xbox app/files and never formated it when; changed jobs. Those files are kinda sentimental to me along with all those Nand backup and dvd key's of the our customers lols

i love videos like these, dont worry these rants are great.
my first 360 was a flashed one, but kid me even though was used to burn a lot of ps2 games, 360 games were a pain since dual layer dvds were really expensive and i could barely find them, i was lucky if whatever shop owner even knew what a dual layer dvd was. so i got it rgh'd at a local shop and then the console died in like 2 months, opened it up and saw that it had a really poorly soldered x360run crap chip and never managed to fix it.
years later i buy another 360, a completely stock fat and decided to rgh it myself with a good chip, turns out it was a kronos jasper which the internet says is the most reliable motherboard so i got really lucky. then i grab a super old pc that had a lpt printer port and managed to write ecc/xell to the nand and also program the glitch chip with rgh 1.2 and it instaboots, finally what i wanted.
months after that i bought two guitar hero guitars and to this day i continue to play the whole library of rock band 3 dlc songs, excellent stuff.
i also got a ps4 right after the 9.00 jailbreak was released and been toying with homebrew/games on that but i still love the 360.

With your experience, you should fork the " Noobert's Flashing Guide | Phat | Slim | Burner Max | PayLoad | Burn Games " and add notes with your findings!
I also feel any tutorial I see, something is wrong at one place or something is not needed.
Only real issue as of now seems to be the Sputnik probe is unavailable for the SLIMs so I assume making a home made probe with a resitor might do the trick..

In 2022, there is another solution kinda. With RGH there is a plugin called netISO that was leaked recently that allows you to stream the ISO from your PC and it's significantly better than ConnectX (for those that remember that awful plugin). Another perk of this plugin is that it lets you play burned games on a NON FLASHED DVD drive. Overall, it's a pretty cool plugin that doesn't really get any recognition.

Man i feel you, i recently RGH a friends trinity, and because he wanted it cheap i got cheapest modchip i could find locally which was Squirt360, and of course none of these x360usb and stuff are avaliable anymore so i had to buy a DB25 connector to flash the modchip via LPT, MTX Spi Nand flasher was cheap and had to get it cus 16mb, i had a HARD time making all this stuff work, i was doing all of this in my Vaio XP Pentium 4 machine since its complete and works fine for all this driver nonsense, First i spent way too long finding AutoGG with the latest dashboard, and after that and doing the DB25 thing i had to pull a 3.3v wire from the Vaio PSU to power it because LPT didnt offer any power and finally worked....and accidently removed the dvd key on the system somehow.... so now the disc drive wont work unless i drill it but it isnt a problem for my friend so... Now my 360 falcon, didnt want to RGH it so i decided to flash its disc drive dg-16d2s, it was back in 2017 when i found you and your videos always helped, thanksfully my old system (FM2 A68H) did read the dvd drive over the mobo satas, and accidently killed the drive by resting its pcb on the metal chassis, so i got another drive and got it flashed on the same place with its DVD key, and didnt touch it til 2021 where i wanted to read a backup and didnt read... Now i tried doing it on that Vaio system with a VIA6421 i had for some time, and it ""worked"" and by that i mean jungleflasher was freezing the pc anytime it wanted to access the VIA6421 for some reason even when i even toke out the PCI Sound Blaster, at the end because of that i bricked my drive and i was very stressed over it, so i had to take my server which has hardware to run 7 (A4 5300, A85X) put the VIA6421, installed 7 on spare hdd and discovered i had to run FreeDOS over a usb drive to fix the drive which isnt a problem for me but imagine for someone who hasent touched even windows CMD on their life... So after all that problem i finally flashed my drive with JungleFlasher..... honestly i had so many problems with guides begin outdated and most software outdated to hell, not to talk about not begin able to buy old tools everyone used, so having to use the wacky ways like LPT and VIA6421, i wish in the scene they can find a method to use generic USB SATA adapters to flash these....

With that being said I have Windows 10 64-bit and plan on using the Via 6421 the flash my BenQ on a retail Zephyr. Just wondering if I use the drivers that came with the 6421 and is there still a risk of powering the drive through the 360? I'm a little late to the game obviously, thanks for the video 😁

For me 5x X360 later - I think ill retire. I just wanted to learn soldering and improve on soldering. (very small solder points when you have never soldered before!) I had 1 Coolrunner3 that died, one that never worked and confused me for about a year and then 1 final Coolrunner one that finally worked for all 4 (excluding an extra Xenon which was pointless doing as really noisy!) Having dodgy Coolrunner's made my endeveours pointless and i thought my soldering days were numbered but i refused to give in so 3rd time lucky i got 4 xbox360's working! When i figured is was not me but the dodgy Coolrunners my faith in my soldering and being able to mod was restored by 100%. Especially with the RGH 3.1 hack! The 3rd Coolrunner luckily seemed to work fine! (Although the 1st coolrunner i had seemed to work ok for a bit as read a nand but did not write after every possible mode then just started showing red light - Overall i think i was unlucky) Never give in! lol

Man for real i hate to think about how old the xbox360 is. I had a side gig modding 360's just to pay bills. The only reason i bought the 360 was because it was moddable. Coming up on it! Retro is subjective to everyone, I personally believe 20 years is when a console becomes retro, but we're only 2 years away from that for the Xbox 360!
Although for many we're already there. I knew it was a wrap when I went into a GameStop last month to ask for a Xbox 360 PSU and they all said without hesitation they don't have one, because the system is too old.

Couldnt I install a Windows 7 Professional VM inside of VMWare or VirtualBox on Windows 10/11 and redirect the USB traffic from the X360 USB Pro V2 to the VM? That way I could run the necessary software in Admin Mode instead of dealing with it on the Windows 10/11 side?

Mr Mario, I did this mod on my Xbox slim and it works but there is an issue when using Aurora dashboard on my Slim RGH system. Can you you can confirm if the Aurora dashboard slows the DVD game disc rotation compared to running the same disc on the normal MS dash on your system?
It could be a "feature" of Aurora, but it causes jittery video on games when they show intro videos like Otomedius Excellent, I did some testing on the same system and the video plays back fine when running the game from the normal MS dash and one can hear the disc is spinning faster than it does in Aurora. My guess is Aurora deliberately reduces the disc rotation speed for some reason--maybe to reduce the noise. I don't know if there is a way to fix it in Aurora.

Try this on your Xbox: Put in a disc game and start it from the normal MS dashboard (you should hear the usual jet engine noise of the disc spinning), then exit the game and start Aurora dashboard. Then start the game disc from Aurora and see if it still makes the jet engine noise of the disc spinning like it does in the normal MS dashboard. Let me know if you hear any difference in the disc spinning noise. Cheers.

It is a shame that more software from the 360 modding scene isn't open source, granted there was a lot of leaked software used, which itself hurts the long term viability of the scene.
I reckon the switch modding scene will have long legs, because the vast majority of software used is open source, including the SDK used for building homebrew. The 360, not so much.

I still love 360 it's a shame we have not seen people still working on it.
I was expecting emulation to move on well with this system but it hasn't.
Another thing which surprised me is how no one has managed to allow people on RGH to use any dvd drive (just to think if you could have internal bluray or hddvd)
MS banned millions one of my console which had not even been flashed they banned MS refused to even talk to me about it.
New drive firmware wasn't released because the console was at its end of life also they milked all the money they could from it they wanted to try milk more by using those virtual devices
Typical TX bad instructions yet they would blame users when having issues. (people asked them for the blueprints as such for a lot of old devices they was pr**ks about it then claimed did have them anymore yet another member claimed they would re release them if demand of 5000-10000 people was willing to pay lot of money)
