So You Want to Buy a Xbox 360? - Revisions, Modifications, & Recommendations!

- So you want to buy a console? Well, you've hopefully come to the right place! Welcome to the first episode of this series in which I aim to dissect one console per episode and take that time to educate you all on any worthwhile features, any "GOTCHA!" moments to look out for, revision differences to keep in mind, and finally... Modifications! This series does not serve to be a "buying guide" in the traditional sense, so you will not get many peripheral or game recommendations from here. Optimally I want to show people why they might want to consider a certain older game console, and if they pick one up what they should look out for, as well as modifications they can perform in the future.
Why?! The interest is there! In 2017 my best performing video on this channel was a PS2 teardown/modification video, and I noticed that videos focusing on these older consoles were getting a considerable amount of views. Many people also told me they got so excited from these walkthroughs and tutorials that they went out and bought up these old consoles! Whether its practicality or nostalgia, I couldn't tell you for sure, but the interest is there! Even so, my biggest video of 2018 (and top performing video on the channel overall) has been a Xbox 360 video. Yes. 2018. Xbox 360. I can't make this up.
This video has been made with Fair Use in mind and has been created as an educational piece of media.

Of course, really appreciate it and thanks for being an awesome guest 😁
Modern Vintage Gamer I
Modern Vintage Gamer can you make a video About how to flash a dvd drive of a Xbox 360
I beg your pardon 🤨 I have to be the only person who uses and YES I PLAY MY 360 ONLY BECAUSE OF KENECT🤪

I used to get 360's from ewaste and restore them to usable conditions. Never found a RRoD'd Jasper out of the 100+ 360's I got. Most of the time the dvd drive belts were just slipping. That revision is (in my opinion) for sure the most reliable.
truly
I’m pretty sure the jasper will reign supreme in 10 years, at least I hope 🤟
I know this comment is a year old, but I will definitely confirm this for anyone trying to buy a 360. My 1 year limited warranty according to my microsoft account page expired in 2011. As much as I hate to say it this console has seen some warfare. I happen to be a smoker, 1 or 2 drops on hardwood. Neglected to clean out the internals until semi recently. But it has never RRoD'd on me. Most I ever get is the occasional sticky tray. It works perfectly, despite being quite laggy sometimes. It is without a doubt the single most reliable fat motherboard imo.
Glad to see MVG on the channel.

I totally disconnected from gaming for a long time (about 10 years) and decided to get back into it last summer. I got a cheap second hand Wii U to enjoy Breath of the Wild and a number of other games on that system, and I got an XBox 360 S really cheap and am really enjoying that console. The games may be old, but they are new to me, and there isn't much on other newer consoles that would make me go with them instead of what I did opt for
This video is DEFINITELY for me!!
Just found out it's a Trinity... thanks for showing how to identify it!!
I find this information is also good even if I decide not to mod it in the future, because knowing there is something that can be done should the DVD drive decide to fail is good... although I tend to fully install the games I'm playing on the hard drive, and that's easy to replace should it fail, and it takes some of the stress off the DVD drive.
I can get a Kinect sensor from the same store I got the XBox from, and they have them for about €6 (plus €6 shipping)... I may get one next time I get something from there, as they charge same shipping for 2 items as they do for one, and then i have it there to collect dust!!
.......why......just why? 10 years of gaming potential spilled on the floor...... I bet you have a good reason but damn I could never ever take a break that long
Im planning myself to get a bunch of older consoles. Now where i live even secondhand fat xbone/ps4 are now really cheap :D
Same here! Nearly 10 years and just recently in Oct started again with an OG Xbox.
Andrea Woodvine thats awesome i still prefer the 360 myself when i tell ppl the games are still new to me they laugh at me
Got mine for $25 with 15 games and three controllers
"I dont own any of those... fortunately " me with only the E: I'll just cry in the corner
I have the E version I’ve come to love it as well as my original 360. Only thing I hated about it was the lack of the lights in the front that spin on startup and show which controller is connected. But it’s quiet and runs great.
Really stepping up your game with these uploads, man. Recently did a Jasper 1.2 and everything's running fine. Though im inclined to play it in the basement since my temps are better, but i dont have a router down there lmao
Thanks for doing this, I was looking for info and this is the only video I could find that breaks everything down for people just thinking about getting into this kind of stuff.
I’m 20 mins into the video and I only have a slim version so I don’t think I’ll be drilling into that and creating custom firmware anytime soon 😂
You have the best console channel! I've learnt so much from you! You talk so all people understand not to fast and not annoying. Many thanks to you from Sweden :)
Very much appreciate the love, thank you. 🖤
This series will gonna help a lot
dude this video is great! i love that there is a single stop for all the knowledge up to this point for the console. nice work!
Thanks, James!
Really enjoyed the video, very informative! Thanks MrMario!
Thanks for this good and detailed video!!
One thing you forgot to mention was, the 360 e is dead quiet. It is the quietest console i own. I love all variants but the 360 e is the most practical.
My slim goes vroom 🏎
It's 2020 an I'm finally getting into the xbox 360. 🤣 I really appreciate this vid Mario. I've been watching your content for awhile now and because of that helped open doors for me about modding consoles that I never even knew existed. I softmodded my O.G. XBOX from your Rocky 5 vid. I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. Many thanks & continue the great work.
I am one of those Laggers that completely missed the Xbox360 and for that matter the PS3 as well... I have been a PC Gamer for a long time so I just never invested in consoles until 2020 when the Covid shutdown resulted in just enough boredom to make me buy both a 360 and a PS3. I immediately jailbroke the PS3 and that kept me busy for a while but when the 360 arrived I actually created an Xbox account and took it online and I may not even RGH it, I may just collect physical games for the 360 cuz I'm nuts like that.
Have fun! The PS3 and 360 are such a treat to collect for right now, tons of great titles to be found for cheap.
Love the video and was really neat to have modern vintage gamer onboard
About the lan/wlan stuff: you can grab any kind of repeater (or router capable of working in that mode) and simply hook it up with the fat x360 lan. Its solves the lan/wlan problem, and a repeater/router have way more powerfull wifi than those dongles.
Queue the 'but it uses another power socket' complaints. ;)
Dude. You are a life saver. I bought a halo 3 themed xbox 360. Those particular ones have the older motherboard, and yes, experienced several rrods. I really wanted to keep the 360 cause the art design was so beautiful. Thanks to this video, I bought another 360 with the jasper motherboard and transferred it to my halo themed xbox case. Now I have a fantastic looking modded limited edition system that's guarentee to last long. ;)
are you still modding xbox?
Do you have a fat model?
This video takes me back. I still remember completing my first JTAG.
Used to love hanging out in XBINS.
Wow, mind blown! As a mom of a pre-teen who needs to go purchase a new Xbox 360 because his broke omg so so much to know. He loves vintage games of all sorts but I had no knowledge of the Xbox world. Thanks for sharing!
Glad this is helping parents!
Know this is 2 years old, but still had to reply, all YOU needed to know is to get a jasper xbox, xbox 360s or e model. Because of low failure rates. Everything else is about how to pretty much hack the xbox, something that your pre teen son probably doesn't know how to do (I'd imagine if he did he would tell you to buy a rgh xbox off ebay and that he'd probably guide you to do or tell you which model to get). This video is mainly for xbox enthusiasts that like to modify the system to play backups of games or games downloaded off the web. (Which is technically piracy)
Good info... especially about the jasper board!
I circumnavigated the "fat" wifi dongle problem using a laptop/cat 5 ethernet and internet connection sharing...
Which could make a short and informative bit of info for your subs! 😆
& also Ive found AMD chipset pc's are more compatible than Intel for many xbox mods...
Excellent Video My Brother Appreciate all the time you put into this
I just shared it on my business page as well I am sure my people will love seeing it Appreciate you brother and looking forward to what comes next ;)
Found out I got a Jasper and a Trinity. Pretty excited about that. I guess I won't sell my Xbox 360's then. I can vouch for the Jasper being a reliable console as I guy randomly gave it to me missing the power button, faceplate and literally internally buried in what seem like pounds of dust. After a full clean out of dust, debris and hair I was amazed it came on and it kept coming on. Planning on getting a replacement power button and modding the Jasper or the Trinity down the line. Just wanted to say thank you for your instructables, as I am one of the few lady modders out here, who sometimes sells and you have help a bunch. Much appreciated.
Do you still mod xbox?
Great video and lots of information. However I am missing the overheating and cooling revisions in your video. Any recommendations?
I got a 500 GB Microsoft original hard drive off Amazon recently for about $35 with free shipping.
Just checked a minute ago and I am seeing only generics at $36 with free shipping but keep your eye out.
Very nice , like always !
Heck I’m wanting to pickup a 360 only for modding, and editing my Xbox one back compat gamesaves
Awesome video! I never had an OG Xbox and actually got a 360 to play the Rareware games from both gens and flash the DVD Drive for fun. It was a liteon one too so the extra challenge was nice. That and upgrading the 20Gb HDD that came with it. The console itself is a launch Arcade Xenon which has yet to get RROD believe it or not. Guess its one of lucky few that are true warriors. The fats are alot of fun to tinker around with.
thanks for this and all your other videos
please cover the psp next, not only becouse i like the system, but also becouse i know you do too, and that would meke for a great video :)
@@AdmrlSpeedy modifying a psp was easy as far back as 2005. Even I could do it xD
@@AdmrlSpeedy ah I see.
great vid, probably the clearest resource i've found. You've actually talked me out of modifying mine, too many risks - I'm just going to stay stock and buy a stack of cheap pre-owned games instead. But big thanks for the clear info though!
Glad to help! You can find them on sale quite often as well, even right now GameStop is selling 4 for $10 games.
Excellent video. One of the best I have watched of yours. Wife laughed at the hat but what does she know :-)
The hat's purpose has been fulfilled.
Five years later and I stumble across this helpful video. I had one of the fat 360 models from back in the day which died on me, so I replaced it with an S. Like you, I prefer that matte finish. I've since found scrapped units and went and swapped the black trim on the sides with the chrome trim from another model. The black trim actually looks really nice on the white S by the way, so it was a straight upgrade for both models. I also certainly appreciate having that extra 4GB of storage to play around with.
Thanks to your video, I grabbed an older fat unit online and got it restored inside and out. It turns out to be a bit of a rare bird. The internal makeup shows all the signs of being a Jasper v1, but it's got a clearly marked Kronos chipset as well as solid state caps, like some kind of in-between unit. Manufacture date is 2009-07-17 so that might say something. In any case, after replacing the all-too-fragile faceplate with an intact unopened "woodgrain" one I snagged off eBay nice and cheap, the thing's looking very nice. I also have a HD-DVD drive which I can use as a USB multitap for connecting all kinds of extra peripherals to make up for it only having 3 USB ports. Ethernet to it's spot is no issue either, so won't be missing the wifi.
Now it's only a matter of deciding which of these two will be my main "Live" unit and which one will be my hacked unit. Your video indicates the Jasper is the easier of the two to mod... but I'm still not too sure. Heck I may just wait it out until MS turns off the 360 servers for good and just mod both of them at that point.
Hey, nice pickups! Thanks for sharing your experience 🙂
Amazing video! So helpful dude! WOW Yes I missed on XBOX 360, I had a PS3 that gen and now I wanted to get a 360 as well. BIG thank you for all this great information!
Glad to know!
43:20. Watching the video 5 years from when it came out lol
Are you going to do a PlayStation 3 version of this? I sure hope you will.
ps3 dont fail as often lol
@@ulissesvillegas8395 The original PS3 models (the ones with proper PS2 backwards compatibility) fail all the time.
@@ketchup901 Espeically with the Blu Ray Drive
@@ketchup901 well now it’s possible to fix them permanently just have to replace a chip I forgot which one
@@gamerghost001 yeah, but it is a consideration for those that don't want to mod their hardware, especially if they have a PS2 anyway. The only reason to get the fat is for PS2 compatibility, so I always recommend a slim in this situation.
Holy crap you know MVG. I was watching him a few days ago..
MVG is the truth.
Great video!
Think this is what I've been looking for!
Glad it helps!
I'm actually here _for_ Kinect games. I played them a lot as a child, and they're the primary driver of my nostalgia in this pursuit. I plan to set up a Kinect in the same room I use for VR.
It's a shame they get so much smack.
There's a large variety of great hits that cover a variety of genres!
I'm Still rocking out my Xbox 360 slim in 2018 ;)
I just bought a S slim with 250 gb HDD for $35. Crazy cheap and lots of games that will likely never get made backwards compatible on the xb1.
I'm happy with it even just as a NCAA football and Outrun machine.
WHOO!
Mr mario, you should do a video about fixes and for common 360 failures, like a stuck drive or quality of life mods like replacing the stock thermal paste. Recently I was given a Resident Evil red elite that had been gone through hell and back and I had to do a disk drive belt and thermal paste replacement, after that not only it ran cooler but quieter and the disk drive opens with no issues. So I think it would be helpful for everyone looking for extending the lifespan of their consoles.
Mr Mario great video I have a falcon RGH 1.Also I have a flashed Philips lite on DG162DS but its jammed.I think the PCB is good.I also have its DVD key what should I do?
Replace the drive. Or clean the drive
mr mario is thicc
Zigafide prove your thinking power
Thicc gang out here
MrMario2011 how can I add roms on my SNES360 and FBA NEXT emulators? Tnx.
MrMario2011 you said in the video you might leave a comment on a hard mod service that you think does good work. Any recommendations?
Lmfao
Great fucking work as always sir, very informative. It will great to see other options to play multiplayer just like system link in xboxunity server it will be awesome to see what you are able to find and share with your youtube subscriber. Thanks for your hard work.
I have a xbox 360 elite since it came out still works and never failed me
Aren'y the early Trinity slims the ones that were scratching a bunch of disks? I know the xenons did too, but as far as the slims, which ones had less scratching issues?
All of them did.
MrMario2011 ouch 😂
To be fair I have no interest in modding a 360, I'm more interested in trying to figure out which model to trust not to become a red ring/dot paperweight.
But this was a very well done in-depth analysis of the 360, on the modding and revision side of things.
Thanks!
This is awesome, i bought a pre xk3y'ed slim from my teacher so my old xbox is just collecting dust at the moment.
I will probably try something from this video, thanks.
Cool teacher.
I guess you could say that.
Yeah, my teacher is apparently into modding old consoles.
What are the best heat sinks to use for xenon or jasper model?
I'm considering a 360 or the XBox One. Since u can play quite a few 360 games on the One I might just go with that.
With more games being added it isn't a bad solution, although it will never have 100% backwards compatibility due to licensing.
I have a 360 E, which I think looks great. It was a birthday present from my wife back when it was still a thing. I did a hard drive mod to get a 500GB hard drive on it. I'm not really intested in mods on top of that though, since I care about my Xbox Live account etc.
I did mod my Wii though, since Nintendo doesnt really care anymore.
Awesome video
I am learning Australian by listening to MVG videos. Pretty good!
An important skillset to have.
So far I have a Falcon and a Zephyr then 3 more on the way (random phats so I don't know what they are.) I found some 5 dollar coolrunner clones online gonna experiment (I got them so cheap if they blow up I wont cry too much.) This and like 3 other of your video's are going to be sooo much help once I get everything in place (PSU's machines chips ect.) Thank you for your video's!!! :)
What do you mean when you say that Coronas are more stubborn and you don't really recommend them? Is it very difficult to install RGH on those?
Hi, i just found this video. Could you put some timestamps in there ? Would be great.
By the way i made a little research for myself and if i understand well the best slims are Trinity and from the normal/fat models are the Jasper ones ?
I just want to buy a good xbox360 for modding to play games for free and download the ones i want. Which would be the best xbox 360 model for this ?
I have an xbox 360 slim and flashed the drive firmware successfully by hot-swapping it onto one of my SATA ports on my motherboard o.o (with JungleFlasher), that is, if your motherboard supports hotswapping. Took me maybe 3 or 4 tries because the xbox would turn off before JungleFlasher found the drive, and do stuff with driver signature disabling but it worked.
Cool vid, may dig out my family's old Xbox 360 S and play it some. It's a Corona board, but it's been reliable, even after 3 OG 360s died (the last of which I believe *was* a Jasper even!). Really dusty, so may give it a clean but likely won't mod it any time soon.
mr mario am so excited seeing ur face you know i have been watching your video on how to jailbreak ps3 and they work perfectly. thxs sir
mr maio i need your help sir.my xbox 360 show 3 red ring yesterday if u have any helping video on that please drop link and 2ndly i want a vide link on how to unlock all andriod ftp lock using computer.
33:13 I totally played me some XBOX on a Commodore monitor! I just wish that I still had mine!
What about internal hard drive recommendations such as 1tb or 2th for the rgh consoles?
Very useful. Haven't had any interest in the newer gen consoles so I think I might go with an Xbox 360 and mod the hell out of it to make it perfect.
MrMario i need your help haha, I RGH 1.2'd my jasper and it wont boot to dash it just freezes at the xbox 360 logo ?
I know I'm late but, sick Run the Jewels shirt, Mr Mario :)
RUN THEM JEWELS FAST
It would be pretty cool if you could look at some ODEs since there aren't really any good videos on them
Can we get another video like this? Like for the PS2 or Wii U? or maybe even the OG Xbox?
helping hints thx a lot bro!👍🤘😎
Glad to help!
Great video
I have 250gb slim for online gaming, and recently picked up 60gb falcon v2 for rgh. As a pc user i enjoy evening online bf3 sessions on xbox360. Obviously 720p 30fps is no 1440p 288fps on pc, but its still quiet fun.
i keep my 360 for retro sports games. Most are not compatible on x box one. I enjoyed this video very informative
An x360 slim E is still modable? Here in my country is the more common model but looks like you pretty much hate the slim E! Greetings from Colombia! Waiting for the PS3 episode!
Not all.
Shoutout for that RTJ shirt
👉🤛
I already own a Slim since 2012 and I just bought a xbox 360 Elite because it looks the best
They do look nice.
Is it worth it flashing your xbox 360 elite in 2019??@@MrMario2011
You mention Jasper motherboard but there's 2 more successors to those: Trinity and Corona. What are you opinions on those?
I mentioned those as well.
I bought a console lot recently. I was pretty happy that it included a Gears of War slim. 3 out of 4 worked fine. Unfortunately, the GoW had an E82 Red Dot of Death. Can you swap out the motherboard and just disable the disc drive and then RGH it or would it give you issues? I know you can bridge some of the pins for the drive to get it to not have the LED flash. I just wanna know if it's possible to swap boards out. I'm not all that concerned about having a functional disc drive if it can be RGH'd.
You can swap out the motherboard and as long as you can do some soldering, swap out the DVD driveboards.
What monitor are you using?
Hey Mario great video but my question is ,if I get the xbox s with the trinity motherboard .Dose it have to be on any special firmware to hard mod???
???
No
I have one of the earlier Xbox 360S models and recently its given one of my games laxer burn. Do you know anything about the lazer burn issue and which model to suggest if I was to replace it for a different Xbox 360?
All Xbox 360 console drives do that, best to install the game discs to a hard drive.
I’ve got a couple of Xbox360 S consoles, One is PAL and one is NTSC J. The former is shiny, the latter is matte in finish and has no HD and only 4gb of internal storage. My question is other than the case is there any real differences in them? I will add my PAL system was a launch model as I traded in my OG Elite model to get it and the NTSC J system was bought in the summer of 2011 from Hong Kong.
No real differences aside from region code and a storage module.
So the slim model is better than the jasper model? But can you do pretty much everything on both?
Depends on personal preference.
Slim: Smaller form factor, quieter, built-in WiFi.
Jasper: Most reliably model hands down, no debate.
A great channel for my 14 year old nerdy needs!
We out here trying.
Same
Now I'm 18, still a nerd :D
Mr mario . Trinity vs cortona which better in temp and run cooler ?
I have played with ps4,wii and pc my whole life but i got a xbox 360 for 60 euros had 1 controller, hdmi cable and power cable its a really good console and this video is very good keep up
Thanks!
Watched this video on my fat jasper 360, still a terrific and dependable console.
I purchased an xbox 360e in 2018 after seeing a you-tuber playing Fight Night Round 4. I had to have that game.
I got my xkey360 when it came out, I play backups online never had a problem, I like how it works
i drilled my actual xbox 360 a long time ago. i loved to do it
Hey MrMario2011, so in August of 2018 I got a xbox360 from Amazon, it is a falcon 2009 and when I took of the faceplate it had a Microsoft Xbox 360 void sticker, but it had the Xbox 360 logo on it so does that mean it’s refurbished?
It's a newer model then.
Nice RTJ shirt \m/
You can play games from any region on hard modded xbox 360's with dashlaunch.
Anyone got any good recommendations for a place to buy an rgh xbox? been thinking about going through Console Warehouse, but I'd like to hear about/consider more options before I bust out any money.
my jasper turns 8 this april lol. still works. the hdd has some bad sectors but its working nonetheles.
This is what i did :)
Bought a xbox 360 e 4gb $50 at a local pawnshop near mint!
Bought a 250gb HDD $25 at a local gaming store.
Bought a limited edition Red xbox wireless controller $25 on ebay.
Best $100 dollars I have spent all summer!
I kept all my old 360 games from last gen thankfully and pawnshops always have them from $1 to $5 lol
A whole lot of fun to be had for $100! And yep, games are so cheap right now, especially the non-BC ones.
Not a bad find - though you more than likely have an unmoddable Winchester board on your hands, it should be a cool reliable system for just playing stock games!
Was looking at some used XBOX 360 consoles 2 weeks ago and decided to wait until I was more sure which one I should go for.
Good thing I waited :D
Great video!
Got 360 S corona mfg date is in 2012 do you have a video on how to mod it? Was looking for easy way cause soldering might not be my thing. Just want nes and snes emulators and offline moded xbox and 360 games with online option but not for online game play. Seen your dual nand video and dang i might be able to do that but looks difficult.
I don't have any videos on the Corona, not sure when I'll get around to one but there's a few others out there!
I just won an auction on Ebay for a 1st gen model Xbox 360 Elite (the big white) with 2 Controllers, MS Remote and 32 Games (good ones) for under 40€ and it runs great.
It´s a nice system, Microsoft allways has a great build quality on their systems and at the moment pretty cheap for the Consoles and Games.
