"Daydream Believer" is a classic. I'll bet those other groups are kicking themselves for passing on it! Every time I hear it I can't help but sing along. It's just one of those great songs.

I think sometimes and idea just needs the right person to give it that little something to bring it to life. The Carpenters did the same thing with 'Close To You' and a few other songs that are memorable to the baby boomers.

I loved “Bye Bye Love.” Still hum it. Almost everyone in my life is gone now but the memories linger. I was one of those kids who sang into a hair brush and wrote songs myself that everyone sang on the school bus. LOL. My husband passed away a decade ago and he knew the lyrics to every song ever written. He could join in progress. ☺️ My parents were the same way. I can only guess it’s because songs had meaning. Music lives forever.
There’s no mention that I can find, but I often wonder if Jesus ever sang….or did he just wait for Elvis to come along to sing gospel.

Freddy Fender apparently hated recording (or covering, to be precise) Before the next teardrop falls, but it became a No.1. Maggie May was regarded as a throwaway by Rod Stewart - and supposedly Everybody's talkin' was written hastily by Fred Neil at the end of a session for no reason other than that one more track was needed for an album!

    1. Chip Douglas was an original member of the pop group, the TURTLES. He was also the producer for the group's huge hit, "Happy Together." He was now a very valuable commodity within the industry. Chip left the TURTLES to work on the MONKEES' next album, "HEADQUARTERS."
(Douglas would return to the TURTLES for a short while.)
    2. Chip Douglas was not "developing music for the MONKEES' second season."
On the contrary, he was the producer of the MONKEES' 3rd LP, which was their FIRST album done on their own, showing they were a REAL BAND.
    3. BTW, this Chip Douglas was NOT the character, "Chip Douglas," on the television show, "MY THREE SONS!"
    4. [More to follow?]..........

Diltz became a renowned photographer for great, iconic album covers like Crosby, Stills, and Nash's cover on the porch of an old house and many more. He also did most of John Stewart's album covers!!

That's a common misconception that got a little grease on that fire when Davy Jones was asked to appear at a U2 concert date in the 1990s. They performed "Daydream Believer" together, but U2 guitarist Edge Evans credited Neil Diamond for composing the song when they were through performing it. It became a nice little pop fluff piece in the press that whole weekend.

Neil Diamond wrote I'm A Believer. Both songs have the word "believer" in them, so maybe that's where the confusion comes from. Daydream Believer was OK, but I'm A Believer was much, much better.

I love this kind of stuff. I remember reading about John Stewart when he released the song "Gold" back in 1980 (I think). So when you mentioned The Monkees, I had a pretty good feeling it was "Daydream Believer." Always liked The Monkees and John wrote some pretty big hits throughout his life. You mentioned the We 5 in this story, maybe you could find out some stuff about them, like where they're from. I won't mention it here in case you do a piece on them. Groups from their homeland weren't very common back in the 60's.

Actually to me, thinking about it, "funky" does make more sense with the lyric idea of that verse. But I think it would stick out because it doesn't really "sing" as well in the musical style of the song. "Happy" is kind of bland and cliché as a lyric, but it fits into the sound more.

About then, folks started stirring about the b side of the first single. So then the fourth single was re-released but the b side became the a side. Bingo! Huge hit! That song was 'Black Water'.
