  • Here's another item from the George Collins' collection that I showed in my 1,000 subscriber episode: a Heathkit IM-38 AC Vacuum Tube Volt Meter (VTVM).
This particular item was in good shape, all it needed were a few new capacitors and resistors, plus a little attention to the meter movement.
No endorsement is made nor implied to any commercial products referenced in this episode

Well done with the meter fix... I own two AV2 beasties & they both suffer from the jerky meter syndrome. I ran my Heathkit T3 signal tracer through & it's motorboating. I've replaced all the electro's & checked the virtual centre-tap & all seems fine. Work is ongoing. Thank you for this post:)

You can also use a dryer sheet to reduce/eliminate static on a meter. When I first heard that I was a bit skeptical but I had a meter that had taken a bump and that was enough to impart a bit of static to the movement. A couple of swipes of the sheet immediately drained it off, actually surprising me!

Excellent. For the cap with the writing not visible... Just write the info on the visible side, or make a label.

i was thinking of asking a watch restorer to see if you can remove the pivot oil and replace with some nice fresh oil.

Hi,I recently came across some vintage heathkit items, does the hw-18 have any value to collectors?
