Southgate did a fine job but was outclassed by a better manager. Parking the bus with 88 minutes left is always risky, even if you have Maldini, Cannavaro, Baresi, Nesta, Chiellini, etc. What England failed to possess, unlike many previous dominant Italian squads, was a precise counterattack. The Italians were more savvy and never panicked. Great game.
Exactly man. Italy tried that style of playing in 2000 and 2002 and it didn't work even though they had world class defenders plus Toldo/Buffon. Why on Earth would the English think they could pull it off with the likes of Stones and Maguire, when Italy's hall of fame of top defenders couldn't?
England always lose when it comes to any big pressure game moments, they always will, they may be a fair side these days to be fair but it is the mindset largely whereby the players constantly know their supposed fans will always turn on them and they forever carry this vile burden contained inside. You may had well get used to the fact that it will always be this way ... save yourselves all the disappointment every tournament.

No coach - Hoddle, Eriksson, Capello, Hodgson - has been able to convince English players to move beyond the "score one and defend until you can't anymore" mindset.
