The fact that Ellen and Patrick were able to reconcile and communicate with each other had to be very healing. He didn't exactly leave the show in 2015 on the best of terms. Patrick coming back to Grey's is what 2020 needed. Patrick wanted to do it to bring joy and happiness to the fans

He didn’t spoil Mer having COVID. It was so obvious. She was looking run down and sick and ragged. And then passed out in the parking lot in the first episode. It’s obvious. Lots of greys has brought back loved ones passed away throughout the entire series so I’m not shocked Derek has come back in spirit! Denny, O’Malley, Ellis the list is long of spirits that have been shown to come back to visit after death.
