    I am 71 and I have spine and lung cancer. I listen to Pentatonix every single day. Hallelujah and The Prayer being the two songs that give me the most strength to make it through the day! This is not to say that I dont love ALL of their music. They bring me peace and joy and goose bumps and tears of joy. Thank you for reacting to them, and Thank you Pentatonix for sharing your talent's with all of us!

    When you heard Scott's opening vocals and said, "it does not look like that voice was going to come out of that guy", I just broke down in laughter because I was thinking to myself, "just wait till you hear Mitch sing!" I am like many other pentaholics who go in search of people who have never heard of them, as amazing as that is, to see their reaction to the group that we are all so totally in love with. To see somebody react like you did reminds me of the first time that I ever heard Pentatonix and I got that vicarious thrill all over again! Getting full body chills is not an unusual reaction. Some are even brought to tears because of the sheer beauty and magic of the music. I loved your reaction and I am subscribing in hopes of more Pentatonix. Cheers!

    Avi Kaplan, second soloist and bass is a classically trained singer and had just received a letter of hire from the L.A. Opera House the day before this group formed and he chose the group. He remained with the group for 6 years before leaving and now has a solo career.
    He is, in my opinion, that greatest bass out there.

    • @pamscarr8696
      @pamscarr8696 Před rokem +9

      Avi is not just a great singer, but he also a prolific songwriter.
      He often drops shorts/short recordings of either a portion of a song he has written or covers a bit of a song someone else wrote and recorded.
      Here is a cover of a short he recorded. He often records these from his cabin deep in the forests of Tennessee.

      As you react to more recent PTX songs you will notice the new member of the group whom replaced Avi. His name is Matt Salee. Though no one can delve as deep as Avi, Matt brings a lot to the group and has been a great addition.

    • @Androvalius
      @Androvalius Před měsícem

      Matt Salee, who replaced him in PTX, fits quite well in his shoes.
      But if you want to hear two guys who ARE as good as Avi? Check out Geoff Castellucci from VoicePlay, and Tim Foust from HomeFree, two other acapella groups like PTX (although with quite different styles).
      All three know each other quite well, and Avi even sang with HomeFree for one collab.
      If I could recommend some good songs to get a feel of what they do, I'd say :
      - _Oogie Boogie Song_ and _Nothing Else Matters_ for VoicePlay.
      - _Man of Constant Sorrow_ and _Ring of Fire_ for HomeFree.
      Both group's repertoire is quite large, but those should be a nice entry =p

    I love seeing people discover PTX. It is hard to imagine that anyone doesn't know of them.
    I will let you know that there has only been one member change. That was the bass, the man with the beard.
    The guy with the hat, and the girl, change their looks like chameleons, but it is always them.
    They have a huge catalog of music, both covers and original, and they have done all types. They are well known for their Christmas music. They breathe new life into old classics.
    Enjoy the ride.

  • @Badger77722

    What a great reaction! While virtually everyone who's never heard Pentatonix before gets "Mitch-slapped" when he (4th solo, round hat, high tenor/countertenor) starts his verse, I'm not sure I've ever seen anyone just get completely Pentatonix-slapped quite as thoroughly! This was so much fun to watch!
    You mentioned that they sounded like an entire choir at different parts of the video - especially in the final two Hallelujah choruses, that's the Pentatonix "wall of sound", where everyone who's singing is belting their hearts out, and it does indeed sound like an entire choir is singing. It's something you'll hear fairly often in their music.
    And just so you know - while some groups (both a cappella and other) will sometimes "double-track" or overlay multiple recordings of someone to get a fuller sound, with few exceptions Pentatonix doesn't do that, because they want to be able to duplicate what you hear on a recording when they're performing the song in concert. For an example of that with this song, you could take a look at their live video of this song done in front of an audience for their 2016 Christmas TV special. Here's the link: czcams.com/video/haFHrfmfHbc/video.html
    BTW: Pentatonix's recording company is very strict about protecting their IP rights, and copyright blocks are a common occurrence when reacting to Pentatonix. The text overlay on the video and the multiple pauses are great when reacting to Pentatonix videos, as it helps avoid the copyright blocks - so keep it up! The Pentatonix fans ("Pentaholics") have all seen the videos multiple times, and we're here to see your reaction, not the original video.

    They call themselves a "band," so you may as well do so also. And actually they've been around for 11 years; they began in 2011. As for how you could have not known, well, we don't know everything. I just discovered them about six months ago, so I was late to the party too. Come on in; it's a fantastic party. By the way, the fans call ourselves "pentaholics," and we're happy to help newcomers get up to speed. Oh, and it sounds like there's music because there *is* music; there just aren't any instruments.
    Five people it is. In this video:
    • First verse: Scott Hoying. Scott is a lyric baritone. Male ranges, from low to high, are bass, baritone, tenor, and counter tenor (also called contratenor). When referring to a man's vocal range the term "lyric" means that it exceeds his nominal range. In Scott's case, his actual range begins well into the bass range on the low end and extends well into the tenor range on the high end.
    • Second verse: Avi (pronounced Ah'-vee, emphasis on the first syllable) Kaplan, lyric bass. Avi is a true basso profundo, the very lowest of the bass singers. His low notes have been known to blow out speakers in live performances, to the point where Pentatonix had to buy their own set of speakers that could stand up to him so they'd have something reliable on tour. However, Avi is a *lyric* bass, which means that his range doesn't end in the normal bass range. Avi's range extends up through baritone to the lowest reaches of tenor.
    Avi is also the only person who has ever left Pentatonix, in 2017, shortly after this video was made, for personal reasons. He has gone on to have a very successful solo career, and has a new band named "Avriel and the Sequoias." You can find his CZcams channel by typing "Avi Kaplan" into the search box. I recommend subscribing. Avi's replacement doesn't appear in this video, but I'll give you information so you'll recognize him when you encounter him:
    • Matt Sallee (pronounced Suh-lee', emphasis on the second syllable). Matt is the second black guy in the group; if you're uncertain which is which, Matt has pierced ears and wears what appear to be diamond earrings; Kevin (the beatboxer, whom we'll get to shortly) has no piercings. Matt is another lyric bass. He's also the youngest member of Pentatonix and it appears that his voice is still developing. When I attended their concert in Denver on November 20, 2022 he sang a different arrangement of the second verse of "Hallelujah" that seemed to have been written to show off his full range. I don't have a trained ear, but I would swear that his lowest note was as low as anything I ever heard from Avi, and his highest note was well into the tenor range. I always knew he was good - he's in Pentatonix, after all - but at this point Matt's voice is spectacular, and I expect it to continue improving for at least another year or two. His voice is reminiscent of chocolate, and curling up with a warm, soft blanket and a purring cat. And he has a delightful smile.
    •Third verse: Kirstin (also known as Kirstie - rhymes with thirsty) Maldonado, mezzo soprano. Women's ranges start at alto on the low end and run upward through several varieties of soprano: mezzo soprano is the lowest soprano range, followed by soprano, followed by coloratura soprano. Kirstin's actual range starts at the bottom end of the alto range and extends all the way through coloratura soprano. And on top of that she has wonderful whistle notes, which I won't try to explain because I don't understand them myself, but if you type "Kirstin Maldonado whistle notes" into a CZcams search box you'll find a demonstration.
    Kirstin changes her hair color frequently (every day? I don't know, but it seems like it) and her figure has matured since the band started in 2011, when she was just 19. Additionally, her lips are fuller, and the shape of her smile has changed, so people frequently think they see a new woman in Pentatonix, but it's always Kirstin. Go by the voice, not the look.
    • Fourth verse: Mitch Grassi (pronounced Grah'-see, emphasis on the first syllable), counter tenor. We refer to that amazed expression upon first hearing Mitch sing as being Mitch-slapped. Don't let it worry you; it's happened to all of us. (For that matter, it's happened to most of us more than once, because Mitch is full of surprises.) Mitch has a range of just over six octaves. He was nowhere near the highest he can sing in this song. His voice has been described as a "once in a generation voice." Shawn Stockman, of the band Boyz II Men, described it as "one of the prettiest voices I have ever heard in my life." Most people just call his voice "angelic." Scott and Kirstin both say that sometimes in live performances they'll find themselves not singing, because they stopped to just listen to the beauty of Mitch's voice. But Mitch was bullied in high school for how high his voice is and he has trouble believing all the praise he gets. Fortunately, during lockdown he finally began getting some professional help dealing with his imposter's syndrome.
    Mitch is another one who changes his look frequently. Hair color (he went with purple for a while), hair style (he had a shaved head for a while, which led to unfounded rumors that he had cancer), facial hair or lack thereof, and weight are all variable with him. Also, sometimes he wears glasses and sometimes he doesn't. But as soon as he opens his mouth you know it's him.
    • The fifth member of Pentatonix is Kevin Olusola (pronounced Oh-loosh"-oh-luh', primary emphasis on the second syllable, secondary emphasis on the fourth syllable), beatboxer extraordinaire. Kevin is one of the best beatboxers on the planet, if not *the* best. Yes, he is Pentatonix's entire percussion section. He's also a genius. Kevin is classically trained on piano, saxophone, and cello. He can and does beatbox while playing the cello, a technique that he invented and which he refers to as "celloboxing." He's performed at Carnegie Hall twice, once on saxophone and once on cello. He has a pre-med degree from Yale, and he speaks five languages, including Mandarin. And he's generally too busy beatboxing to sing, but on the rare occasions when we do hear him sing he has a lovely tenor voice, and is known for the great beauty of his falsetto range. And when he laughs the whole world seems like a brighter place.

    This is one of my favourite ever first time reactions to Pentatonix! Also, they don't ever record anything that they can't sing live so if you listen to various times they have sung it live, it sounds just as good. Us PTX fans are called Pentaholics - welcome! I have been a fan since they got their first break on the a cappella competition 'The Sing-off'. They are the best a cappella band in the world in my opinion. "It's the most beautiful combination of voices on the planet" - yup that's Pentatonix but I was waiting for you to get the 'Mitch slap' and was not disappointed! He has the voice of an angel! You are in for such a treat.
    Mitch, Kirstie (mezzo soprano) and Scott (tall, blonde baritone) have been friends since they were 8 years old growing up in Texas and they sang in high school together. They found Kevin (the beatboxer, cello player and tenor too) and Avi (looks like Jesus - he's the bass) in 2011. The only group member to change since 2011 is the bass, who was Avi and the bass is now Matt Sallee - who is also amazing. You may think it's different members depending on when the songs were recorded but that's just because Mictha nd Kirstie change their looks frequently.
    They have a huge catalogue of all kinds of different music, pop, rock, EDM, rap, hip hop, world music, so something for everyone and though they are best knows for their beautiful a cappella covers and their Christmas music, their original songs are incredible too and much under-rated. They have three Grammys and a star on the Hollywood walk of fame. They are just incomparable. I always suggest newbies start with Bohemian Rhapsody, their Daft Punk Medley, Mary did you know, and The Prayer. Then try their 'evolution of medley' videos - my favourite ones are Beyonce, Michael Jackson and Ariane Grande. My favourite originals of theirs are Love again, Can't sleep Love and Sing. Enjoy!

    Pentatonix
    They won The Sing Off in 2011. They made a guest starring appearance on America′s Got Talent as non−competitors a couple of years after that.
    The founding members are:-
    Scott Hoying (tall blond guy, natural baritone but has an impressive five−to−six octave range, can go all the way up to high tenor and down to bass, sings the bass lines when the usual bass singer takes the lead);

    Kirstin "Kirstie" (Rhymes with "Thirsty") Maldonado (the only female member, natural mezzo soprano, but can go down to low alto and as high as upper soprano, also can sing in whistle notes that are off the scale); For a time in 2018 between the group’s tours, had the female lead on Broadway in the production of “Kinky Boots”.
    Mitch Grassi (a true contra−tenor, can hit high notes in his chest voice with ease and go WAY higher in his falsetto, also with ease);
    Avriel "Avi" Kaplan (dark beard and long hair, true basso profundo, trained as an opera singer, also can go up into the tenor range; and
    Kevin "KO" Olusola (beatboxer extraordinaire, also is a world−class cellist who plays cello on some of their songs, has a beautiful high tenor voice and gets occasional lead vocal solos as well, graduated pre−med from Yale and speaks several languages including Mandarin Chinese).
    Kirstie, Scott & Mitch grew up together in Arlington, Texas, and began performing together as children in local youth musical theater. They ended up in high school together and performed in the choir. While there, they formed an a cappella group called The Trio which had several performance videos go viral on CZcams, most notably a cover of Lady Gaga′s "Telephone". The three of them are best friends and consider themselves to be almost siblings.
    Scott & Kirstie (who were a class year ahead of Mitch) both graduated high school in 2010 and went their separate ways to different colleges, Scott at USC and Kirstie at Oklahoma.
    While at USC, Scott joined a USC−based a cappella group called the SoCal VoCals, where he met alumnus Ben Bram, who was now an arranger and vocal coach for the NBC TV show The Sing Off, an a cappella competition show. Ben convinced Scott to get The Trio to audition for the show. The three reunited (Mitch had to skip high school graduation ceremonies to go) in Los Angeles for the audition.
    They found out that the rules had changed, so they needed at least five members to audition. Ben put them together with Avi (a native of Visalia, California), who he knew from Avi′s performing days at Mount San Antonio College in California. They found Kevin (from Kentucky) through one of his CZcams videos that had gone viral featuring him playing the cello and beatboxing at the same time, a talent that Kevin coined as "Cello−Boxing".
    Kevin arrived in Los Angeles literally the day before the audition! Scott came up with the name "Pentatonix" after the pentatonic scale. They performed a re−arrangement of "The Telephone" for the audition and passed, despite having been together as a five−piece group for less that 24 hours!
    They won The Sing Off that season (all of the performances are available on CZcams), in which they received a substantial cash prize AND a record contract with Epic Records. They pooled their prize winnings together and all moved to Los Angeles, and all got apartments right next door to each other in the same building.
    But just a week later, Epic dropped them because the marketing people didn′t think an a cappella group could sell records.
    Instead of giving up, they were determined and began recording their own songs on CZcams, hiring Ben Bram as their producer and arranger. These usually consisted of the five of them sitting on a couch and performing cover songs live.
    Several of the videos went viral, and Sony (the parent company of Epic) decided to give them another chance by placing them on one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. They released two secular EPs and one Christmas EP on Madison Gate, all of which were strong sellers.
    But when their cove r of a medley of songs by Daft Punk not only went super−viral, but also won them their first Grammy, they were promoted all the way up to RCA Records, Sony′s top label.
    They began writing and producing their own songs in addition to their covers, began putting out a Christmas album just about annually (which has become their best−selling genre), and have had multi−platinum album sales, sold−out world tours, and have won two additional Grammys.
    Avi began getting burned out with all of the touring and heavy recording schedule, was suffering from anxiety and personal problems, and learned that his mother had been diagnosed with cancer in 2017. He announced he was departing from the group and taking some time away from the music industry.
    Matt Sallee (from Baltimore) joined them in September 2017. He did only become official when they renewed their RCA contract in February 2018, but he recorded with them in September as a featured artist and went on their Christmas tour as a featured artist, as well. When he attended the audition for the group, he had already mastered the Bass part for most if not all their past catalogue. He was successful and has proved that he fits in well with the group.
    If you think there have been other changes to the line up - look again. This is the ONLY change. Kirstie and Mitch are like chameleons and change looks frequently.
    After a year away from music, Avi has now returned as a phenomenal solo artist in the Folk/Americana/Roots genre.
    Ben Bram has been in charge of their production, including arranging and directing from the beginning. He is often referred to as the sixth member. Scott and Kevin are major players in the arrangements, but every member contributes. good watch is "The Recording of Evergreen" where a camera was invited into the studio for the second week of recording/
    Also, all members are songwriters for both Pentatonix and their own solo work.
    Ed Boyer who mixes everything of theirs (even the HWB Livestream) is the one who pulled Ben Bram into the sing off in the first place.
    They were nominated for a 4th Grammy for their album Evergreen, but didn't win.
    Kirstie became a new mum which caused a pause in touring after their Evergreen Christmas tour 2021.
    They have announced that they will have a star on the Hollywood walk of fame to be installed in 2023.
    Things you need to know because if you get these wrong Pentaholics will come after you with pitch forks and torches! Ha Ha!!
    1- There is NO Auto-Tune; what you hear is actually what they sing. They really are that good. One exception is the 90's Dance Medley where Cher used autotune as an effect - so they had to.
    2- What produces everything that you hear in the video, you see in the video. If there is an instrument used in the music, you see it on screen. In the 2022 Christmas album, there are some instruments not featured throughout the album.
    3- They never release something on video they can’t reproduce with the exact same quality live on-stage.

    Thank you for your reaction. Don’t worry about stopping when you need to, it’s part of how you react. PTX has a very large selection of songs to choose from. They have mash-up medleys like Daft Punk and 90s Dance Medley and Evolution of Michael Jackson. They have covers (really upgrades) of Amazing Grace, Imagine, Sound of Silence, and many more. Almost any Christmas song. And they have a lot of original songs. Invariably they make everything their own. If you see a song you like, try it. If you see a song you think you won’t like, try it anyway. You will be pleasantly surprised.

    Pentatonix has hundreds of CZcams videos with over 7 BILLION views. They started in 2011 and had one change in 2017 when Avi, the bass (looks like Jesus in the video), left and Matt took his place. I highly recommend that you react to Pentatonix "The Prayer" next. The wall of sound that comes from them is unbelievable. They sound almost exactly the same when they do these songs live. PTX doesn't do covers. They do upgrades. They do gospel, holidays, rap, country and western (they won a grammy with Dolly Parton), classical, hip hop, blues, golden oldies, swing, and many more genres. The "boy" is Mitch Grassi. He has that effect on everyone. It's called being "Mitch slapped" because you're speechless with your mouth open. He'll do it to you again many many more times.

    You are now a Pentaholic. Welcome to the family!
    I've had the increidible privalage of hearing them preform this song live. They are even better live.
    The guy who was singing at the beginning of the song is Scott Hoying, baritone and the heart of the group. The second singer is Avi Kaplan, who is a basso profundo, which means he can sing lower than a usual bass. Unfortunately, he did leave the group for family and health reasons in 2017. Their new bass is Matt Sallee, who you’ll see in their more recent videos. The woman is Kirstie Maldonado, who sings mezzo-soprano. The fourth singer in this is Mitch Grassi, counter-tenor with the voice of an angel. You haven’t yet heard the full range of what Mitch can do with that voice of his. He is AMAZING and he will take your breath away at times. We - the Pentaholics - call it being Mitch-slapped. You'll love a good Mitch-slap, we all do. Kevin Olusola (aka KO) is their beatboxer and human 808. He can also sing tenor and play the cello.
    Scott, Kirstin and Mitch have been singing together since they were in high school. After acquiring Avi and Kevin they won season three of Sing Off and have been unstoppable ever since. They are the first, and so far only, acapella group to win a grammy. Their newest album has just been nominated for what might end up being their fourth.
    You HAVE to see their video of 'Daft Punk'. It's what earned them their first grammy. Others you CANNOT miss are their covers of 'Gold' by Kiiara, 'Imagine' by John Lennon, 'Radioactive' by Imagin Dragons (with Lindsey Stirling), 'Can't Hold Us' by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, 'The Prayer' originally sung by Celine Dion and Andrea Bocelli, and their original songs 'Sing' and 'Love Again'. That will get you started, but this rabbit hole goes all the way down.

They all have 6 octave ranges. DEEEEEEEP Rabbit hole with over 200+ videos. In a Class by themselves, at the beginning you said zillion 5 billion, truth is they are over 5 Billion views on CZcams views. I would suggest "Sounds of Silence" next. There has only been 1 change in the group, the bearded man (Avi Kaplan) left in 2017, the new Bass since is Matt Sallee and you get to hear him. Bohemian Rhapsody is another insane one. That beautiful low note is by Avi Kaplan (beard and beanie) who left the group in 2017 and now has a successful solo career. Their earlier works include their versions of classics such as Bohemian Rhapsody, Imagine, Little Drummer Boy, Mary Did You Know, Jolene (with Dolly Parton). Their medley of Daft Punk songs won them a Grammy as did their version of Dance of The Sugar Plum Fairy, and many more, together with some fantastic original work. Since Matt replaced Avi, they have continued to produce some fantastic songs (you will probably love their versions of Amazing Grace, The Prayer and The Sound of Silence) and were again recently nominated for a Grammy. So much to discover!

  • @danielcarter837
    @danielcarter837 Před rokem +5

    Over 200 upgrades (covers) and originals. Not a bad song in the bunch. About 95% of their songs are completely acapella. A few have Kevin's (the beatboxer's) cello, Scott on piano, guitar on one song, three collaborations with Lindsey Stirling playing violin and a few songs with instruments on their last Christmas album. They are probably the best acapella group in the world today. Their fans are called Pentaholics. It is a disease with no cure, not that we would want to be cured. They absolutely destroy us with the emotion and beauty of their work on a regular basis. Their are no words in any language that describes them anymore. They have been a group since 2011 and have only had one member change. Avi, the guy with the beanie that sang bass left in 2017 for personal reasons and was replaced by Matt.

Scott, the first singer, Mitch (guy in the hat), and Kirstin, all grew up together in Texas. In order to get on The Sing Off they needed two more singers. They literally formed the group for The Sing Off, and were on season 3 (spoiler: they won). This show is a great way to get to know them. You can pick any of their songs and I am certain you will love it. Bohemian Rhapsody will truly boggle your brain, as well as Daft Punk medley. Their Christmas songs are just soooo enjoyable. Welcome to the wonderful world of PTX! I thoroughly enjoyed your reaction!
    With your background in church music, I would recommend Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone as your next choice. 💖

    They are unbelievable. I only found them just over 12 months ago. I told my Son about them. He told me (he's known about them for ages). Still annoyed with him for not telling me about them. You have to listen to the prayer. It's stunningly beautiful.
