What happened to Timofey Mozgov? (NOT HIS FAULT)

  • What happened to Timofey Mozgov? Where is he now? Mozgov won a championship alongside LeBron James with the Cavaliers and cashed in big time with the Los Angeles Lakers. His downfall was even quicker than his rise though - Mozgov is out of the NBA altogether today and may be retiring from professional basketball soon in Russia. His story explains the modern NBA and what many players like him have experienced over the last 5 to 10 years.

I think it's necessary to point out just how good Mozgov was with the Cavaliers during that first season with them. You mention that he started all six finals games but didn't talk much about how good he actually was. And he went above and beyond expectations that season. His scoring average that season went up by two points and he shot almost 10% better from the floor (59%, which is absurd). Why is that note worthy? He was brought in to help clog the paint on the defensive end, but ended up being a consistent scoring option in a starting line up featuring Kyrie Irving, JR Smith, LeBron James and Kevin Love. That's insane.
Another thing I feel you need to mention in regards to him not playing much in 2016: he wasn't playing a lot even when Blatt was still their coach. The reason his playing time disappeared was because he had knee surgery in the offseason and missed the entire pre-season. As a result, he wasn't able to get into the playing shape he needed to be in. And thus, his on court quality play was significantly worse. At the height of his career, he was a legitimately great fifth scoring option and defensive presence for a title contender. And I wish you could have pointed that out better. Thanks.

Been watching your videos. I'm a big Pacers fan and your trade Oladipo or Myles Turner video popped up on my recommendations list. After watching this, I think it's clear who we need to trade and I've been saying it for the past 4 seasons. Turner and Mozgov are obviously different players at different times. But I think Turner still plays old school center ball but is athletic enough to keep up and play great defense. I don't think Turner will be any better than he is right now though. We're still pretty early in the Oladipo experiment and I think with good signings and trading Myles we could be in a good position in the East. Also think Brogdon will continue to bloom along with our young core and experienced vets we can come out of the East. I am very curious to see how well Kyrie and KD will blend in Brooklyn. Anyways, keep up the good work and as a new subscriber I'll be looking forward to new content!

Brook was the best mid range shooting big man (besides LMA or KAT/AD) and his transition into shooting threes wasn't that big of a jump. At the time it was right before the Cavs fired their coach and he was still getting a lot of minutes. Man call’s Timo’s career a fast rise then literally tells a story of his 5 years of eventual growth in the NBA, Olympic bronze and all that prior to joining Cavs and losing a finals with them before winning a chip. And that is without counting his Khimki years. That’s not really fast, buddy.

It's a minor point, but you give Mitch Kupchak too much credit for those trades. Mitch was only the assistant GM at the time. It was Jerry West, not Mitch, that cleared the cap space and engineered that blockbuster trade/acquisition of Kobe and Shaq.

No arguing that the NBA Center has evolved to smaller guys to stretch the floor, especially with 3 point shooting. But my home town Center Rudy Gobert is an example of old school center DOMINATING the league.
This should be his third year as Defensive Player Of The Year. And he has no 3 Point game at all. And even his midrange shot is barely there. But his hoop defense, rebounding and hoop offense are some of the best for a guy his size in the last decade!
So saying old school center play is entirely gone is not accurate.... 💯💯💯💯

He just got older. Even with the game changing. The team who is unafraid to put two talented back to the basket bigs on the floor and some great role players will reverse the trend. Water was a weapon , then we found fire, then we found the tsunami. The man unafraid to be different will prevail. The warriors played that style, then everyone did. Ironically the cavs team was diff and won. It took them adding kd and making a ridiculous team to beat lebron. The warriors would have never won again otherwise. Everyone trying to copy g.s. is what hindered growth in the nba

Great career cut short by a terrible knee injury. He was really a good center overall. Too bad he "retired" at the age of 30. Props to him for not giving up. Maybe if his knee is finally better he can still show us his skills for another few years in Russia. Athletes who come back after years of remediating their almost career ending injury tend to be able to play professional sports at higher ages thanks to the rest their bodies had compared to people who never stopped.
