  • Viv has yet to catch a redear sunfish, so we set out on a mission to try to catch one out of the few public waters in Iowa that have them. Our attempt was unsuccessful, but we found some big bluegill, and we were able to figure out how to catch the big panfish from shore in the Fall, which is quite different than fishing for them in Spring.

Nice catches !!!! I love catching sunfish.

Sunfish are a lot of fun to catch but highly under rated my way. With so many invasive fish in south florida, it's getting harder and harder to catch a decent Blue gill or any sunfish for that matter. Seeing this gave me some great memories. Thanks for sharing.

Those were some quality panfish! Looked like a great day on the water!

Yeah, I wish I had a few more spots like this with giant panfish, but they seem to be getting harder to find public waters like this.

@@teamcramerfishing8441 yeah, especially because word gets out fast and people dont take care of their resources.

Beautiful big bluegills! The ones in the small lake I fish most often don't get that large. I put some 2 lb Omniflex mono on my Ugly Stik GX2 UL combo. I fish for them with trout magnets and a small trout magnet bobber. Lots of fun. When TPW starts stocking the community fishing lakes around with trout starting around the end of November I might bump it up to 4 lb, we'll see. I have a Berkley Cherrywood combo, ML, that I either have 6 or 8 lb mono on, I don't remember which. Works great for trout, bass, panfish, etc, etc. My other one I plan to use for trout this year has 20 lb Power Pro braid on it. I'll tie on a 6 lb monofilament leader with a small hook and sinker with Powerbait. Rod is a Diawa Laguna. Reel is my Kastking Sharky II 2000. This combo is currently being used as my finesse bass combo that I fish shaky heads and other small bass lures on.

Yeah, there are some giant gills in this lake. My biggest ever came out of it at 9.9 inches, almost a master class fish, and my wife and I both caught 11.5 inch redears out of here a couple of years ago. 2 lb line is probably too light when they start hitting 10 inches. I though that big redear was a bass for sure and I was worried I was going to break off my 4 lb line when I caught it :)
As for set ups, when it comes to strictly panfish this $20 Eagle Claw fiberglass rod we picked up this fall is a lot of fun and super cheap. It's just way too flexible for anything but panfish.
This year I've been using a lot of worms as bait for everything. It's a pretty good bait to catch everything and figure out where the fish are at. I think next year I'm going to use more micro-artificial baits like the trout magnets. I actually have a lot of them, but haven't been using them a whole lot this year.

From a boat it would be a piece of cake. We caught a couple under a bobber in the morning, but once the sun came up they moved deep to about 10-12 feet. I ended up using a mini Santee rig with a size #20 hook and wrangler worm to get them from shore. I'm going to experiment to see if I can float a micro-jig under than Santee rig. Notice I'm using Trout Magnet floats. In theory I think it work if I get the micro-jig 6 inchs to 12 inches off the bottom. This is definately on my 'to do' list.

They should be all by the bank in the morning. I am editing a video now where we fished off the bank all day and got a ton of crappie and bg. I was only jigging, and champion was floating a worm

They were in closer in the morning, but only for about a hour it seemed. And the vegetation was very thick in the spots less than 6' deep, so it made them pretty hard to fish even if there were fish in there. I was surprised I didn't get at least one crappie out of there. I was casting for them with the Presso, but no luck. We do get into a little crappie bite in a future video, though. There are a lot of crappie anglers around here and many of them have boats, so I've had a really difficult time locating great crappie holes in the bigger lakes when it's not spring. I do have one in mind I haven't fished for a while. I might have to give it a try this week and see if I can find them in the big lake.

Was wondering what size line you’re using on the presso? I’ve been having a lot of issues lately with 10lb braid on my ugly stick lite setup with a sienna 1000

I actually have three different set-ups for the Penn Battle 2 1000 that's on the Presso. In this video I'm using 4lb Stren Mono, but also carry two spare spools, one with 2 lb Suffix Ice line, and another with 20lb Spiderwire EZ Braid. My experience with braid is that 20lb is the lightest I'll go because it starts breaking off too easily lighter than that. In fact, on all my other reels except the one on the Presso, I use 30lb when using braid, which is about the same line diameter as using 8lb mono. I don't think I've ever had the 30 lb break on me, but the 20lb has been broken off from wear on lots of rocks. Personally, my 'go-to' for ultra-light set right now is 4lb Stren Mono. It's pretty thick for 4# but you'll be able to cast a long way with it and it's tougher than you think. Not sure if you watched this video yet czcams.com/video/uJCg_siguJA/video.html but I'm using 4lb stren here for this catfish. The only time I have it break off is when fish over, say, 3lbs get into cover. If you're typcially catching fish over 2lbs, I would bump the mono up to 6lb Sufix or Stren. Both will be much stronger than 10lb braid, IMO.

Team Cramer Fishing thanks for the info. When fishing for trout do you recommend the 4lb Stren Mono? Going to Georgia in early spring and was going to try to catch some. Thanks for all the great videos!

I use both 4lb Stren for trout and 2lb Sufix. Probably 4lb is the best bet. It can get a little dicey not breaking off the 2lb especially when the trout get a little bigger. Thanks for watching!

Team Cramer Fishing thanks, do you think 6lb stren mono would be too thick for trout? That’s what my daughter has on her pole and was wondering if she could get away with it. Thanks

I've caught them with 6lb before. It helps if you are using live bait like small worms, or if the water is a little bit dirty. It's when the water is crystal clear and using artificials the line size really makes a difference.
