Jim Cornette made a great point about people criticizing him for being stuck in the 80’s and yet wrestling companies are imitating styles of wrestling that was successful in the mid to late 90’s (ECW, the Attitude Era) and early to mid 2000s Indy wrestling.

HBK been running NXT for months and been running NXT UK for over a year.
So you like Ilja Dragunov vs Walter = HBK booking.
And NXT UK is a quality show with sensible booking and great talent. Its just hard to justify watching MORE wrestling during the week.
And NXT is still the best wrestling show on TV. It's a little goofy with some of the characters but the booking decisions are bang on and solid. And the kids they want over are getting over.

Should be top comment. Carmelo Hayes, Breakker and Waller are already far more money than anyone is AEW and, in terms of speed, better than anyone Jim brought along. Cena, Orton, Batista and Brock were not truly great until Vince took them away from Jim. People say about Meltzer that he doesn't *actually* know shit because all he's done is observe it: Jim is only slightly better because he got behind the curtain (and idolizes a bunch of, ultimately, failed promoters).

To no surprise HBK is doing a great job being in charge of NXT. He has a lot of experience from the 80's, 90's, and 2000's in the ring and out of the ring in every aspect possible from being a tag team guy, singles guy, top guy, referee, manager, announcer, color commentator, spokesman, commissioner, and even ran his own promotion the TWA. Plus he's been in just about every type of match you can think of and has always adapted well with the times.

Hbk was a fan in the 70s started in the awa 80s became a top guy in the mid 90s ran his own school n shows in the early 2000s ran nxt u.k. he and regal trained Bryan danielson so I think he'll be fine. He understands psychology and loves snug work and wrestling technique.

HBK has an advantage over Triple H: he won't ever try to create HIS own brand, unlike Triple H. Triple H tried to create NXT as his own wrestling promotion. It was a great vision. . . if NXT wasn't a part of WWE.

I fuckin loved Triple hs NXT but it did nothing to get it's talent ready for Vince's WWE. Ultimately, that is completely triple h and Vince's fault. Triple h for playing with these people's careers and money to flex his ego, and Vince for not paying attention to what Paul was doing this entire time.

HHH turned the WWE into the world's biggest indie federation. And they failed to make any real stars. Meanwhile AEW is building up Wardlow, MJF, and plenty of young talent to be their future. Jurassic Express is crazy over with AEW fans, as is Wardlow who Tony is doing an excellent job building towards his face turn.
NXT wouldn't even be on a major channel if it wasn't part of WWE. You seem to be overlooking that.

Although not perfect from HBK all I know is putting belts on Mandy Rose & her faction was a good thing because the Raquel Gonzalez project was not working out. Pushing the Steiner kid as the NXT World champion, bringing in Gunther aka Walter, Kay Lee Ray, having occasional appears from AJ Styles & Dolph Ziggler helped the show out alot, wayyyy more watchable than AEWs trash.
On side note Jim's right NXT 2.0 does feel like were watching WWF Raw in the mid 90s. Don't know if that's a good thing or not you guys be the judge. Lol Triple H's NXT especially in the 2014-2015 era felt like watching an episode of 2003 Smackdown.

Wrestlers from the late 90s and after were mainly brought up in the dying territories that were still around, or trained in OVW. I can't name any wrestlers from the indies who were hired at that time. Guys like Reckless Youth were passed on.
jim trained cena orton brock batista shelton. he won booker of the year from the observer twice in the 2000s. he was in TNA when they had more than twice the audience AEW has now. he was in ROH helping people like seth rollins.

Why would Shawn's frame of reference be the 90s? He was a young coked-up rockstar that ultimately failed.
Meanwhile he had a longer run in the 00s, was more mature and levelheaded... And I'd say more successful as well.
For an apples to apples comparison, we can look to last summer, when the Tokyo Games put pre-taped episodes of NXT on SyFy for two weeks. The Feb. 8, 2022 audience number is 23% lower than the average for July 27 & Aug. 3, 2021. The demo rating is 36% worse.

People dont get how much pressure shawn was under in the 90s. In 95,96 the wwf was mostly trash. Shawn and bret were about the only guy on the card that could work. Then you had all the crazy shit behind the scenes that was weighing on him plus all the injuries he was just done. I cant blame him I've left jobs for the same reason. He was miserable. He went out every time and put on a show be it 10 people or 10,000 he would give them everything he had. He wanted to be perfect every night. He put alot of weight on himself and after a while he just couldnt go anymore. After his 4 years away I think he found what made him happy and it wasn't all about wrestling. So when he came back he was a better guy. I've always been a fan of shawn to me he was big enough to be believable. He could move around quick all his spots made sense. He was a great story teller in the ring. Everything he did had a purpose. These guys could learn alot from shawn if hes allowed to teach and they're willing to listen.
Plus you know how hard it is to score Somas in some of those small towns they had house shows in?? That’s pressure!
The fact that Shawn and Bret were the main event is why that period of WWF was mostly trash.
Shawn was a horrible guy back then and did alot of bad things to people. Things that you can't just explain away by saying he had a tough job. He did drugs. He acted unprofessionally in the ring. He got people fired.
But that was back then. People can change and he should be judged for what he is doing today rather than for what he did 25 years ago.

Besides Taker what other quality talent did Vince have from 93-96? Ludvid Borga, Bastien Booger, Hakushi, Million Dollar Corporation, Duke Droesey, Salvatore Sincere, Abe Knuckleball Swartz, The Goon, Rad Radford, Men On A Mission, Damien Demento, Mantaur, Max Moon, The Oddities, Hunter Hearst Helmsley, The Godwins, Smoking Guns, Body Donnas, Ahmed Johnson, Faarooq Assad, Yokozuna.. That roster sucked ass. Nash, Owen, Sid, Taker, Vader, Austin, Razor... That's the only quality top guys Vince had besides Bret and Shawn. Vader was buried in like a year, Austin sucked at first, Sid couldn't put on a good match and Taker was enthralled in gimmick feud after gimmick feud with shit workers. Plus Nash and Hall were gone by mid 96. It's a testament, not a detraction that Shawn and Bret were able to carry the company when the rest of the roster was a dumpster fire.

Actually 2.0 has grown on me, lots of the new talent have improved since the brand changed. The "gimmicks" are catching on with the fans to. Still needs work but it's getting better. Actually feels like this nxt is a training ground for raw and sdown with these new gimmicks and comedy sketches.

Telling Vince how to run a business is just like telling Tom Brady how to throw a football. Love or hate Vince, he is one of the most successful person on the planet and the WWE has grown.
I mean, he's clearly been successful but to suggest he couldn't do anything better is stupid and portrays a lack of understanding of business.

My overall feelings of criticisms of Cornette being stuck in the past, for which nobody requested from me 🙃
Cornette is awesome. I love his podcasts and he gives a shitload of valuable insights. There is also some truth that he's too often stuck in the past. These aren't mutually exclusive.
For example, the promo the week before Punk finally faced MJF. Cornette said they should have rung the bell a bunch of times to bring some urgency, and that they did that back in the Midnight Express days. Would it have helped? Possibly. But it wasn't a necessity like he made it sound. He & Brian made a compelling case that the segment went too long. But as true as that arguably was, it was effective to have MJF sit on Punk and bring even more heat and anticipation for the match the next week. You don't have to ring the bell a bunch of times like they did in the Midnight Express days to make people want to see the match you're trying to promote, and Cornette made it sound like you do.
I'll hang up and ask the people here what Cornette often asks Last at the end of his insights. Does that make sense?
